High School Class of 2018

I got a 1470/219 in Virginia… anyone know the cutoff for commended/merit scholar?

Last year, Virginia’s cutoff was 221, commended was 209.

Wow, people here did way better than I did, but I’m happy with my progress. 1320 last year (201 SI, 690 Reading 630 math) to 1460 this year (218 SI, 720 reading, 740 math.) And I didn’t even study.

But I’m in CA so I don’t think I’m getting anything, right? What’s CA’s commended? 219?

I don’t think CA released their cutoff yet. I’m also in CA and I got a 1430 (211)

Awesome. Let’s keep our fingers crossed, huh? @raffie

So I was looking at some the common app questions for the colleges on my list, and a couple had a place to put a link to a zeemee account. I was like ?? what’s a zeemee… but I looked into it and its like an additional resume you can submit except it has places for pictures and videos of you and your extracurricular activities and even hobbies. I think this is a super cool way of making your college application really impressive because the pictures help bring the ad coms into your world and really connect with you. Check it out!

I got a 1300/193! I brought my score up 80 points from last year! I got a 680 R&W, 620 M. My R&W score went up 110 points, but my math score went down 30. I’m still very happy with it! I doubt I’ll get NMSF or Commended for Maine, though, which I’m okay with.

My guidance counselor said that there was a student who graduated in 2014 at my school with similar stats to me who is now at Columbia, so that makes me happy. He also predicted that I’m going to get at least a 1400 on the SAT, which gets me into the range I want for my reach schools!

Here’s my tentative schedule for next year since everyone has been posting theirs:
AP Literature
AP World History
Advanced Problem Solving (math elective course in which you do math team problems; has honors distinction)
AP Calculus AB
AP French
AP Physics C
Honors Band

SAME!

@ak2018 @snowfairy137 I usually do better at math, but I did better on reading this time because I did Khan Academy SAT practice for reading.

The reason I’m better at math in real life is the lack of subjectivity I think. There’s always only one answer. Real life reading isn’t like that, but test reading is: there’s only one right answer. Also, I read a lot as a kid so that probably helped and I haven’t been taught the math for years so that is probably not helpful.

@frazzledazzle @snowfairy137 I’m usually better at math, but lately, I’ve also enjoyed reading interpretation (looking for a deeper meaning in a story. I think it started last year. I had a really great English teacher.

So I was just announced to be the “heir of the throne”. And by that I mean that I will be taking over the duty of reading the morning and afternoon announcements starting officially next year! I’ll be doing a practice run sometime this week. Along with this duty, I’ll be the school sports announcer and I’ll be able to get into all sports games for free.

@ak2018 That’s awesome!

I don’t know about you guys but I don’t feel very motivated to do my homework when my teachers can’t even bother to grade my assignments from October.

My grades for college are supposed to be released on the online portal sometime today AND THEY’RE NOT UP YET afkldj ewqoreffrd

Hi everyone I need help with my tentative schedule for next year.

My GC recommended I do:
a mandatory class that all seniors must take
French 4AP
English 4 Regular
AP Physics C
AP Calculus BC
AP Macroecon/Regular US Gov’t
Free Period

She said that I shouldn’t take AP Stats instead of a free period but do you guys think I would be able to handle it? I sort of want to take AP Stats as well

Also do you guys think it’s necessary that I take AP Gov and/or AP English Lit?
I took regular English freshman year, honors English sophomore year, and I’m in AP Lang now. Would it look bad if I went down to the regular level again? I am taking AP Lang now and I have a B- (but I am less than a tenth of a percent away from a B and she hasn’t put in a lot of assignments that I think I did well on). I’ve heard that AP Lit is easier at my school than Lang but I’ve also heard some say that the Quote ID questions on the reading quizzes are a nightmare. I’m going to be a science or engineering major most likely so do you think Gov/English are necessary

@neptuna I feel the exact same way. My AP Lang and APUSH grades are currently super borderline and I have the finals for those classss tomorrow and Thursday. I sort of want to know what my grade is with all these assignments from two months ago because I want to have a clear/realistic expectation of my grade and how much I should be studying

@mirandaf I would say it would be better to take any class than a free period if you’re really interested in going to a good college.

Take which ever one you want. If you’re more of an English person, take AP Lit, if you’re a social studies person, do AP Gov. I don’t think it would look bad to not do AP Lit next year, as long as you don’t decrease the number of APs you took last year (meaning if you did two APs this year, do more than two next year). I’m also planning on doing the same thing (going from AP Lang to Regular 12th Grade English). My advice, being a science/engineering person myself, take AP Lit over AP Gov. It’ll help if you get the AP credit. I had a B+ in AP Lang last quarter, by the way.

@ak2018 Thanks for your advice. I’ll definitely take AP Stats then instead of a free period. I’ll consider AP Lit too but I feel like 6 APs would be a lot to handle. In that case, do you think AP physics, Calc BC, French, Econ, and stats would be enough? I’m taking 3 APs this year and an honors

@mirandaf I think AP Stats is a good idea since it’s generally one of the easier APs. But with that on your schedule I probably wouldn’t take AP Lit. 6 APs in my opinion would be too much to handle, especially since you’re going to have to devote a lot of time to college apps. You might want to consider taking AP Gov the semester after AP Macro to even things out, though.

@ak2018 The only other AP I’m interested in is AP Psych. I could take APES and AP Human Geography, but trust me when I say there’s no subject I hate more than earth science. So that leaves:

AP Calc BC
AP Lit
AP Art History
Physics (my school doesn’t offer Honors/AP Physics)
German 3
AP Psych (1st sem.) -> Anatomy and Physiology (2nd sem.)

I’m either going into math or biology, so I think that would be a good schedule. Thoughts, anyone?
