High School Class of 2018

Today is the last day of school before Christmas Break! I needed this break so bad

scores are out for most people by 2 AM Pacific time or 5 AM eastern time

I’m as nervous as you guys are for the results

I’m recently realized that I’m going to have to send my college transcripts to most schools that I apply to. I’m going to have credit from 2 (possibly 3) colleges by the time I apply and college transcripts cost like $10-15 each to send so I’m just over here like… :((

I’m slowly realizing that colleges put a lot of weight on those essays…and I have no story to tell

Basically all I’ve done this week is research colleges and watch Grey’s Anatomy. I’m seriously freaking out!!! I have no hook, hardly any ec’s, and have no idea what I want!!! Small? Big? Liberal arts? University? Co-ed? Women’s??? Do you guys have your reach/match/safety lists? How do you go about making one? The stats are easy to look at, but I’m not so sure about the"holistic"view with ec’s. Help…

@frazzledazzle Les Choristes is soooo good. I love Morhange and Pepinot. Let’s just say I may have shed a few tears during the ending.

@sewin2music

Is it bad that I kind of just searched top colleges in states Hillary won and put them on my list…LMAO

  • Harvard
  • Yale
  • Princeton
  • Stanford
  • MIT
  • University of California-Berkeley
  • University of California-Los Angeles
  • John Hopkins University
  • University of Michigan
  • Michigan State University
  • Central Michigan University

This is my list. I’m REALLY hoping I get into UCLA bc they give college credit for 3’s and I hate history

@LeopardFire Everyone drinks Dunkin in Maine. Some people have Tim Horton’s since we’re super close to Canada, but for the most part it’s Dunkin all the way. My sister prefers Tim Horton’s. We don’t talk about that.
I don’t really know. I have some family members that have the traditional Mainer accent “cah”, etc. I have some of that from living in Maine for almost 17 years, but not as thick. I think the accent depends on the region. I haven’t been to southern New England like CT and RI, but I presume that they pronounce some things differently and use different words commonly (in Maine we say “wicked” A LOT).

@Kelvin82 I haven’t finished it yet! My class is finishing it tomorrow but I won’t be there because I’ll be at a poetry competition all day on the other side of the school. :(( I’m going to find it online and finish it over vacation, though.

@cliffnotes I still have tomorrow. Not much happens on the last day, though. My classes are either watching the poetry competition in the auditorium, watching movies, or playing Kahoot!.
I’m applying to 2 of the same schools as you (although I’ll probably have to choose between them) - Yale and MIT. Have you been to Boston/Cambridge? I love the area!

@sewin2music I don’t have my safety/reach/match list yet but I definitely have a general idea of some of the schools I would go to. It sort of gets complicated to categorize them. Like if your SAT score is way above the 75th percentile but your GPA is on the lower end of the mid 50 percent.

@sewin2music reach/match/safety list (I mean I actually have no clue how to categorize this stuff but here’s my guess)

Reach: MIT, Carnegie Mellon (School of Engineering 1st choice, School of Science second choice), Stanford… maybe
Match: University of Washington, Worchester Polytechnic Institute, Northeastern (low reach?? Idkk)… maybe
Safety: University of Oklahoma, Eastern Washington University, University of Arizona… maybe

I’m planning on applying to MIT, WPI, and NU early action. I’ll have to apply to UW, OU (for scholarships) (and EWU but that’s free and pretty much guaranteed since I’m in their running start program) before I get results back. CMU I’m fairly certain I’ll apply for because it has my preferred major, robotics engineering, but I might not apply to Stanford or UA.

Also, we’ll see how visitations go… I literally have done zero so far, not even to the University of Washington and that’s in state and I have friends that go there (Double whammy… bad at visiting colleges, bad at visiting friends…) lol

Reach: HYPS, Columbia, Uchicago
Match: Emory… Kind of?
Safety: UGA (automatic admit bc of rank), maybe Georgia State

Might add two more reach schools… I’ll probably apply to a maximum of 10 colleges which will be expensive af, and on top of that im a twin soo senior year is gonna be wild

I got my SAT scores today and I am super happy with my composite (740 R&W and 790 Math/1530). I got an 18/24 on the essay (6/6/6). Do colleges actually care about the SAT essay? Is this score okay? If I think I can improve is it even worth it to retake the whole SAT just for the essay? Also is my composite enough or do I need to retake it just for the composite? I’m mainly looking at the UCs/USC.

@cliffnotes lol. I guess that might not be the best strategy but I actually kinda want to try that too…I’ve found that a lot of liberal arts college are really, well, liberal? Obviously depending on location, though. Looks like a good list. In looking at UCLA too! :))

@mirandaf My SAT is 1500 which is supposedly 99 percentile and UW GPA is 4.0. I feel like the stats are good, it’s just that I’ve water so much time doing nothing! The only thing I’m truly committed to is counting for hospice (since sophomore year). I’m currently trying to put together a club to volunteer at my local rabbit rescue, but I think I’d to late for that to matter for college. Can hobbies/EC/etc also be scrapbooking or calligraphy?
I think your composite is really good! No needs to retake unless really think you can improve your score. Also, I don’t think colleges really look at the essay, more do just to make sure it matches the writing style in your application

@snowfairy137 I’m looking at Carnegie Mellon and university of Washington. I’m starting to rethink CMU though because if there high school physics requirement. I know I’ll have to take it eventually, but I’d really rather take AP Comp Sci!!! I seriously need to figure out a plan for college visits. I’m on the west coast while all of my cores are on the east cost (mostly Massachusetts).

@neonerudite I’m applying to about 10 too. I’m to indecisive to be able to narrow my list down any further.

I’m looking at the following universities:

Reach: Brown, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon
Match-ish: Wellesley, Scripps, university of Washington, UCLA, UCSD, UCI
Safety: university of New Mexico, Cal state Fullerton

The only problem is that I really don’t want to go to my safeties!!! The call state is a definite admission, but I really just don’t want to go to a cal state. UMM us there because I could get a full ride.

I got my SAT II math level 2 scores: 750. I’m kinda, sorts, really upset another this because it’s only like the 61th percentile, but oh well…

Sorry for the long post…

@mirandaf I read this Prepscholar article on that, and apparently as long as you get 6 or above colleges are fine

@sewin2music I don’t want to go to my safeties either. ): my Dad went to U of M, so our whole family is really into the msu/u of m rivalry. I think I could easily get into MSU, but I just can’t go there. And I hate it at CMU.

Here’s my college list (so far):
Reach: Caltech, Dartmouth, MIT, Yale
Match: BU, McGill
Safety: University of Arizona, University of Maine

Random question: if I am a junior but going to college next year, which Class Thread do I belong to?

Got a 1400 on my December SAT… Gonna take it again in Jan. Hoping for a 1490+
