High School Class of 2018

@oPhilippos You summed up my thoughts perfectly :-c I am probably taking only 3 APs and one college class online becuase I play three sports, and I feel like next year would be death with more

Do you guys think that it’s smart to do the May SAT, which is right in the middle of my AP tests? I was originally planning on doing it on the June date (I can’t do it in January or March because of conflicts) but there’s an opportunity to be a junior counselor at my local HOBY program that same weekend, and I can’t leave during the program.

@Marg532 Its not ideal, but if its you’re only option do it. You’ll have a chance to retake it fall of senior year if you don’t do as well as you hoped.

No. Save the May testing date for subject tests.

@Wolfgangbread I’m not planning on taking any subject tests, so that’s not really a concern.

@snowfairy137 That’s true! Plus, I will even have the summer to study! (not that it would be ideal but if I need to then it’s good timing)

@raffie I’m taking all the same ones as you in June. US History, Math 2, and Physics

I’ll be taking the SAT 2 in Physics, Math 2, and maybe Chem in either May or June.

@mirandaf @snowfairy137 for physics SAT, how are you studying for it? I’ll only be finishing AP Physics 1 this year so that leaves like 1/4th of the material in the subject test not covered… I’m not really sure what to do about that. I’m thinking maybe studying it over the summer and taking it early senior year

I’m going to take SAT IIs in Math 2 and US History (maybe Physics too) in June. For the SAT, I’ll take it in March if I have to, but I’m more of an ACT person, and I’m taking that in Feb.

@oPhilippos @DaEmmJay23 I have an interest in the six APs I’m eligible to take as a senior, but I’m going to take three or four. I believe I “should” take four APs for college, and I’m willing to, but I had a really long discussion with an AP teacher, who said students who take four or more APs either have mental breakdowns or suffer from burn out once AP weeks rolls around.

@raffle I’m taking general physics (calc based) at a local university all year so I hope I’ll be fine. What I do to study for standardized tests is take practice tests, and review my answers. If I need help with content I would get a prep book that covers all the content necessary. YouTube or KhanAcademy might also be helpful once you’ve identified what you need to learn.

@snowfairy137 thanks for the advice!
@bubblylaugh it’s senior year so I feel like it really doesn’t matter much if you take the actual AP exams or not. I’m going to take the classes, but I probably won’t take all the tests.

@raffie At my school, it’s you take the test, you take the exam. -_-

  • Hey Guys!

Some news:

  • After talking to my counselor and e-mailing a few colleges, I have decided to make getting a standard diploma my "Plan B". If Plan A, doing the summer class, doesn't work out, then Plan B sounds like a viable option for me. It would allow me to not only be able to take AP Computer Science A next year, but would also allow me to do a lot of summer programs. So in case I do decide to go with Plan B, I'm planning on applying to a bunch of summer programs, something Plan A wouldn't allow me to do.
  • This week was a huge L and an emotional rollercoaster. So glad it ended! :))
  • I will be taking a practice SAT today around 9am. I will get the scores back in a week! I know that since they are not a College Board-sponsored company, that my score may or may not be right. I would say that if it's in the low 1100s or high 1300s, something's up. Wish me luck though! :D

Also, because I’m not about to keep this to myself, there is a program called the NOVEC Youth Tour that is pretty interesting. It’s a nationwide program where about 1,600 students go on a 5-day conference in Washington, D.C. It’s considered to be more of a humanities/government and politics kind of program. It is only available to students whose home is electrically powered by NOVEC, as it is an electric company. I have filled out some parts of the application and will try to fill everything out in the next two weeks as the application deadline is February 17th. Definitely a program to consider and one that is considered selective, but not as competitive. You’ll see why in a minute.

You know what’s weird. I didn’t find out about this program online or from a friend, I found out by looking through at a page in the monthly NOVEC magazine that is sent to my house. I wouldn’t have even seen it if the magazine wasn’t turned to the right page. And to think that if I hadn’t seen the magazine, an opportunity like this would been gone directly under my nose and out the door.

Just signed up for March SAT and April ACT. Time to get a plan going lol…

I’m not sure when to take my subject tests. I want to take Chem, Math 2, Bio M and maybe Spanish +Listening, too. I might do the Chem one in May because I’ll have just studied for AP Chem. Anyone know how similar those are?

Is it worth it to wait until November to do Spanish and listening test or just do the regular Spanish test in May? I am fluent in Spanish, and this is just to give concrete evidence of my fluency, but if I wait till November I don’t think any EA applications will have it.

@Soccer1235 I would probably take the regular Spanish test. I don’t really know how much difference the +listening test will make to admissions, but taking the regular Spanish test will ensure that your EA schools will have it.

OK guys, I just got back from my SAT Practice Test session. To my surprise, they used an actual practice test from the College Board (Practice #2, and yes, I understand the conversation about the Throne room :)) ). Luckily, it was a test I didn’t do. Once I got home, I checked my answers with the College Board answers. They gave me the test booklet, not the answer booklet, to take home. Here’s how it went:

Reading: I felt pretty confident about this test. However, after looking over the answers, this was my worst section and I honestly don’t know why.

Writing: I felt really good here. This was my best section of the test.

Math (No-Calc): This section was trash for me. I was doing the grid-in questions first and lost track of time and had to guess on the last 5 multiple choice questions. The grid-in questions were pretty easy though.

Math (Calc): This section was pretty good for me.

So here’s my approximate score:

CR/W: 600
Math: 600
Total: 1200/1600

I am actually pretty happy with this as it shows that:

  1. My PSAT score wasn't a fluke.
  2. A 1300 is achievable for me!

My plan, study over the No-Calc portion as it was my weakest section.

@Soccer1235 I’m also going to take the SAT for the first time in March. I’ll take one more practice test next month and then I’ll do it for real. I’m also going to do my SAT subject tests in May, instead of June. I would say to just do regular Spanish test. Thinking about it logically, admissions officers will not likely care about the difference, as long as you get a good score.

Speaking of SAT subject tests, at this point, I’m planning on taking the Math Level 2 and Chemistry SAT IIs. I want to do one more test since we can do three tests in one sitting and decided doing Math Level 1 might be good in case I don’t do so well on Math Level 2. Do you think this is a good idea?

@ak2018 congrats on your score!
