High School Class of 2018

My AP Lang teacher told me that she doesn’t round up grades unless PowerSchool automatically does it, so if I end up with an 89.6 I’ll have a B+. I needed to get a 92.4 on the midterm to raise my grade to a 90, now its time to start praying…

At least I only have Chemistry tomorrow, and midterms are done! The problem is that I really need to study to raise my grade up to a 90. I think this teacher would be more lenient with rounding up, but I don’t want to rely on that.

I finished my quarterlies last week, and I needed to do super good on my AP Physics one to get an A in the class. Well the county curve curved my score to a 34/34, so I finished with a 94 this quarter and I got a 91 over the semester with my 87 the first quarter. I’m so elated.

I was also the only person in my Calc class to get an A on the quarterly! It was a really rough non-Calc section multiple choice section. My teacher said that this equates to a double 5 on the BC test.

First semester ends on Friday and I am on the edge! My school has a policy that if you get all As both quarters you don’t have to take finals, so I really need those As

Just finished my application for the Naval Academy Summer Seminar. Hoping to get in because it puts you a couple of steps ahead in terms of the full application. Also Cornell and Williams are seeming more and more interesting…

Hi! do you guys think that physics in high school is necessary? I would have to skip AP physics to be able to take AP French and Madrigals(choir), both of which I really want to take. I am not interested in physics at all, but I’m pretty sure that I’d be able to excel from what my friends say. Would missing this third science affect college admissions? I want to be a microbiology/genetics major for premed.

I’ve been thinking about my college list a great amount. I think I got it.

Safety: MD Baltimore County

Probable: MD College Park, Virginia Tech, UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, Illinois, Purdue, & Wisconsin

Reaches: Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Michigan, and any Ivy League if I play football for them.

@sewin2music I would advise you to take a third science, but it also depends on the requirements at whatever school that you go to

@LeopardFire I found an ACT online prep just like khan academy. It’s actually run by ACT, all you have to do is search “online ACT prep” and click the one that has the ACT website then log in

I have 16 colleges on my list and I can’t narrow it down any further. It’s just because I don’t actually know what my dream school is (Stanford maybe?). All I know is that I want to do STEM, so I chose schools with good STEM programs. Here’s my list:
Stanford
MIT
Harvard
Princeton
Columbia
Cornell
Johns Hopkins
Duke
UPenn ( I might take this out- maybe)
Carnegie Mellon
Rice
Harvey Mudd (I’m iffy about this too)
Georgia Tech (safety)
Virginia Tech (major safety)
UVA (this is actually a safety for me)
UC Berkeley

@ak2018 the latest memes are so annoying! I miss all of the classic memes.

Sorry I haven’t been online in what seems like forever! School caught up to me and I wasn’t doing so well.

I decided that I’m going to apply to SSP (Summer Science Program) as well as YSPA (Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics) for this summer! The applications are going to be tedious but the opportunities are going to be amazing!

My college list is every changing!
Safety: University of Maine, University of Arizona
Match: McGill, BU, CWRU
Reach: Swarthmore, Dartmouth, Caltech, MIT, Yale, University of Chicago (I need to narrow this down to 3-4 schools)

I turned in my TASP application last night after finishing 1.5 essays yesterday. They are so bad, but oh well! Maybe I’ll get in but I really doubt it.

How many summer programs are you all applying to? I’m going to apply to MITES, an internship at Dana Farber and at my local science museum. I was also thinking of applying to SAMS at Carnegie Mellon. Does anyone have any more info about SAMS? Info seems pretty limited

It’s not really like the summer programs that you guys are applying to, because admission comes on a first come first serve basis, but I’m applying to Bristol Hills Music Camp in Canandaigua, NY for vocal. It looks really fun!

How did anyone else do on the SAT with essay in December and the ACT with essay in December? I did really bad on both, and I was shocked because I’m in AP English Language and maintain around a B to B+. Apparently my analysis was really low, as well as my organization. According to one grader on the SAT (by the score they gave me), I showed little understanding and use of conventional English. What?? I’ve looked online and found that some people say the essays are just like AP essays, which I’m getting 6s/Bs on. Others say there is a strict system you must apply to; it must be a certain length; have certain vocabulary, etc. I did find the ACT essay to be easier, as it was argument and you could configure your opinion to fit any 3 of the statements or a mix of them, as well as use personal/known examples. It’s required for one of the schools I’m interested in. I’ve read example essays and they seem fairly easy to write. Any tips/tricks that you know of?

Taking the SAT in March and with Essay!

Anyways, I probably won’t do the college course thing this semester. I really don’t want a lot of things on my shoulders since I have plans. Maybe I could do it online?

@frazzledazzle I like the new and old ones.

@DancingwithStars I’m applying for 4, technically 7, but I might go for more. You should love at the website for SAMS. If you’re going to apply, do so by the end of next month.

@cxprus I’m also taking the SAT in March as well.

@Soccer1235 How many programs are you applying to? And how are you finding the motivation to do the essays?

I’ve been doing pretty well over the past few days. I’ve learned that Play-Doh is a great conductor of electricity. I’m doing really well with Limits in Pre-Calc, I actually just might pass the quiz on Friday. I got a 92% on my U.S. History test, securing my 100% A for the quarter and a 99 for the semester. I also found an old piece of paper from when I was like 11 which I wrote after my 5th grade promotion. I promised myself that the night before graduation I would binge-watch all of the High School Musical movies. Guess I have something to do that night. By the way, I checked my school calendar and apparently it looks like our graduation is set to take place on June 8th, 2018. I feel it’s so close now.

I’m not really gonna apply to any more summer programs, I’m already doing one that’s a online class right now and hopefully I’ll get into that week long program which is across the state from me. I’m also gonna have a job teaching STEM summer camps again, and I’m gonna try and find an engineering related internship and work on a personal robotics project. I’ll also be around town for any robotics stuff, and I’ll get to go to the lake with my family and hang out with friends. I feel like there’s enough productive things for me to do in town that I don’t really need to spend more money to go anywhere else lol. Plus I’m super busy right now and don’t wanna apply lol.

So the semester ends tomorrow and it looks like I’m ending it with 3 A’s, 2 B+'s and 2 Bs. Honestly, I’m perfectly fine with this!

I also need some advice. I was planning on self-studying part of AP Calc AB and AP Physics C over the summer so that I can be more prepared for my senior year. I talked to the AP Physics C teacher and she said she is totally on board with the idea and would even let me take a textbook to borrow over the summer. My teachers are also doing recommendations and my AP Chem teacher likely won’t recommend me for AP Physics C, but luckily, I can override his recommendation.
