High School Class of 2018

I got an 89 on my physics test I have an 89 for the quarter and an 89 for the semester. Im thinking of going in tomorrow and begging for one extra point

@LisaM I’m in the same position. I got a 89 in AP Chem last quarter and I’m at an 89 rn but she’s really touchy so I mentioned it earlier this week and I’ll wait to see what happens

Today’s been really good. Ranks came out today and I’m 10th. Also, the career counselor recommended me for an internship at Fujitsu this summer. MIT’s Women’s Initiative visited our school and the big thing I got from it is that it’s okay to fail at the things you’re passionate about. I’m keeping options open and definitely want to pursue technological activism.

10,000 posts is unreal! We reached 5,000 May of last year. Since then, we’ve averaged about 20 posts per day.

@ak2018 I am applying to 8 in all. I haven’t really found motivation on my essays so far and procrastinated until about 2 days before the deadline. However, since I really want to get into MITES and think I have a chance, I’m gonna start them now lol
I have eight essays to write by wednesday/thursday. However, they are a lot shorter than the three 9000 character essays of TASP I wrote in three days, so hopefully I can get them all nice and polished by then.

@Hamlon How many people are there in your class?

@Soccer1235 I really need to start the oeop essays. I write my best under pressure though, so I’ll do rough drafts over the weekend and see what I should scrap and re-do. Harvey Mudd WISTEM decisions come out tomorrow and I’m so scared. I put a lot of myself into the program’s sole essay. More than I probably should have, lol.
@kassh4 About 650?

I’m applying to 2 summer programs and have a summer camp for July as a back up (I’ve been going to it every year for 5 years) and there’s another summer camp in August that I’m planning on going to next summer. Also next summer my family is going on our annual vacation (most likely to Boston or Cincinnati) and I’m doing volunteer work as well as my summer homework. Busy, busy!

I can’t do any summer programs because I have football workouts four days a week all summer long.

@Hamlon Dang 10/650 is really impressive. How many APs did you have to take to get up that far?

@DaEmmJay23 Thats rough. I have practice every day starting the first day of August so I don’t know what Im going to do if I get in to any of the programs I applied to.

Also, has anyone taken AP Econ or goes to a school with a flex period? They are introducing both next year and I am completely clueless.

@kassh4 My school’s not that competitive. A typical AP student would have 3 this year and 2-3 previous AP classes. We don’t really have a school culture of taking AP classes in excess to boost rank. The trend is athletes taking weighted classes to keep eligibility.

To everyone who’s awaiting the 2017 decisions, good luck!

@Hamlon Lucky you… my school has stopped providing rank because of that culture - great students were getting straight A’s and getting rejected from state schools because of relatively low class rank.

@OneNormalKnight @Hamlon I was like top 5 in class rank out of 600, but my entire county got rid of class rank. Our top administrator replaced it with the Latin system. I think it’s better this way becuase I’ll never have a chance at number one since I play three sports, but I will be in the same recognition/area as the person who was able to load up on 3 APs junior year, 6/7 junior year, and 5/6 senior year. I APs like it becuase it helped me decide to only take 4 this year because I think it’s wrong to load up on so many APs that it’s unhealthy for you or you lack in all areas of life.

My district like added weighed class rabk a year ago so its still kinda messed up. I wss 2/500ish but none of my college classes are currently weighed (hopefully that will change) so its going dowwwn :/. I’m gonna talk to my consolor about that next time I see her.

We have class rank and its very cut throat. Everyone knows everyones rank, and people go to the extent of taking 9 AP classes a year just to get in the top five! I got one B last year and my rank dropped like it was hot lol. I think ranking is OK if the school does not put tons of emphasis on it. I also don’t like the idea of taking APs in classes that one is not interested in, but my school’s only options are AP or regular; we don’t have honors classes.

We have a regular and high honor roll each quarter for certain GPA cutoffs, but we don’t rank. I go to an extremely competitive school as it is, so I’m thankful for that.

I’m still waiting for my midterms to come in. I got my first C+ thanks to Pre-Calc, which really sucks, but conveniently I was scheduled to meet with my guidance counselor the day I found out, so I had a nice little breakdown there. Coincidentally, my sister and one of my friends also got their first C’s this semester as well, both in their math classes!

Does anyone else feel unmotivated to research colleges because of their financial situation? Yesterday I was on Emerson College’s website, and basically loved everything about it, but looking at the costs’ page was just demoralizing. My family only has one source of income, my older brother is currently in community college (if he does well, he will probably end up transferring to a 4-year school the same year I enter college) and my twin sister will be applying at the same time as me. With no money saved for college, all I can count on is financial aid, which limits my options quite a bit. I can see myself getting into Emerson, and having to turn it down due to not being able to afford it. :\ Its times like these that I wish I was a Canadian citizen…

@LeopardFire Have you tried looking at other types of scholarships? Are you a California native? I know of a friend who can send you a lot of scholarship links. She’s in the same situation, with a severely low-income family. She’d be glad to introduce some to you.

I looked at mills college, and loved it, but I cannot afford it. sigh. I’m from an low income family and a California native, so @shapeofyou, could you send me the scholarship links? I would be really grateful.

@LeopardFire Look into Questbridge. Also if you get into a full need school you wont have to worry about money and usually if you have siblings in college at the same time the FA is better. Btw I’m in the same boat as you, no money saved up low income and my sister is one year younger so shell be in college at the same time too.
