My family isn’t low income, but definitely doesn’t make enough to send me to dream colleges or anything. I’m relying on financial aid and merit scholarships, too. Ugh!!!
Also, I’m super nervous, because the Hamilton Scholars people are sending out emails on the 30th to people who passed the first round of judging, and it’s only 3 days away! (2, depending on if you count today or not) AAAAAHHHHH!!! I’m so nervous! Why am I nervous???
@Marg532 I really hope you get in, considering the fact that I didn’t submit the app until because I slept through the deadline and didn’t finish the essays. :(( Hopefully, at least one person from this thread will get one!
@Soccer1235 I don’t feel like I have much of a chance for MITES, but more for SAMS, for some reason. I have 7 essays to write by Tuesday/Wednesday, meaning a total of 2200 words or less. Good thing I have a three-day weekend.
I didn’t make it into WISTEM :(( They had 225 applicants for 20 spots though, so I don’t feel that bad.
@solarsystem I’ve been keeping my options open after having discussions with different adults about their college experiences. I’ve made the effort to find something to like about many different schools.
Today was such a great day for me. It was definitely a great way to end off the semester.
Pre-Calc: My plan feels like it worked! I actually felt really confident about the quiz we took today So confident that I was the 2nd person who turned in the quiz. If I don’t get an A on this, I’m going to metaphorically throw hands with Isaac Newton for partially creating Calculus and having us learn it because he wasn’t satisfied with the Algebra. (Jk. I’m just going to be very salty if I don’t get an A. :)) ;)) ) Our test is on in two weeks and this unit on Limits is fairly short. My third quarter grade is going to be solid for math. After this, we’re moving on to Trig Graphs.
U.S. History: Nothing really happened here until my teacher called up to people to his desk to do course reccomendations. Only about six people were called up, me being one of them. My teacher had a paper in his hand from the College Board that basically included a bunch of percentages indicating my academic preparedness for certain AP Social Studies classes based off of my PSAT score, similar to the AP Potential tool on the College Board website. Apparently, a 40% or higher suggest potential to succeed. The paper showed that I all my scores were between 50% and 80%. I memorized some of the percentages and found them quite interesting:
AP Comparative Gov - 80%
AP Psych - 80%
AP Gov - 70%
AP Micro - 60%
AP Macro - 50%
Even though I already have 5 APs scheduled for next year, AP Gov seems like a good choice too.
So now, I’m basically done with the first semester. Thank God, that’s over! I’m currently working on my MITES essays.
@Hamlon Sorry about WISTEM. There are still a lot of programs out there, so don’t lose hope.
@hamlon sorry about WiSTEM. I was rooting for you to get in. I considered applying, but ultimately didn’t because I visited Harvey Mudd before, and wanted to give that chance to others. It’s okay; there’s still so much other opportunities out there!
@ak2018 Just a pro tip, always take the max amount of time the teacher offers especially in math where a stupid addition mistake can cause you to miss the whole problem. If you are done early just keep checking it over and over until time is called or you are 110% sure you didn’t make any stupid mistakes.
I only applied to OEOP for this summer. I should probably apply somewhere else just in case, but I have a pretty good feeling that I can get accepted. But, let me not jinx it.
@angelwings0137 Great. I’m still working on the essays. With all of my schoolwork, I’m probably going to finish them by January 30th. Wish me (us) both luck! :)) I’m pretty sure you’re automatically applied into all three programs from OEOP if you apply for MITES.
@kassh4 Thanks. I just feel like that class is so competitive sometimes.
@ak2018 Yeah sometimes you just have to ignore them. I realized this a few years ago when i realized that those that turned in their tests super early they always did poorly.
@kassh4 Agreed. Assuming you know the material, doing the test might get you a 90+ and double/triple-checking gets you a 100. I know some really smart people at my school who study a lot, but then try to do tests & quizzes as quickly as possible and end up getting 85s to 90s on tests and quizzes on smaller, easy-to-fix mistakes.
With this in mind, try to do everything correct the first time. It makes it easier when double/triple-checking your work and if you run out of time, you have a shot at still getting 100.
I threw up six times yesterday I have some sort of stomach bug. Today I feel better, but I missed a day of writing essays. Now I have to cram a couple essays in today. Yay.
In my old school I would have been 1, but now I am 19th. I think a big reason for that is because there is an “honors” band class, and I didn’t take it honors freshman year because my old school doesn’t have that, and I didn’t take it last year because I didn’t want to do private lessons lol, so that was a big deduction to my GPA. However, since my class is over 650 people, I think I should be fine.
@Soccer1235 Whats the difference between honors and regular band at your school? At mine there all regular except there’s Band 4 honors but they don’t learn anything different.
Also get better! I’ve been sick for a couple weeks now and it sucks.
@solarsystem thanks and I hope you feel better too!
There is no difference except you take private lessons and you have to perform an adjudicated solo or take part in an honor band.
And I just found out I failed AP Chem for the quarter making my semester average a C! :(( :(( :(( I’m going to need to get an A to get that end of year grade up to a B. What’s worse is my Chemistry teacher last year said I’d probably get a C, and I’m proving her right. :((
@ak2018 You can still learn from previous mistakes. It’s your first AP Science class! Make a study group with kids who have a better grasp of the material and buy the Thinkwell course, so you can go back and master what you’re struggling with. Chemistry just keeps building. If you didn’t understand something from a previous unit, your overall lack of understanding widens.
@Hamlon I think I don’t know where to begin. I started out with a B in the class and got a D+ this quarter. I feel like I started the year with a lot of gaps from last year. I think it would definitely be a good idea to start a study group, but I don’t really have that many friends in my AP Chem class. It seems to be that most of those failing the class are seniors who don’t really care that much. I’ll still look into starting a study group. We have a quiz on Tuesday so I’m definitely going to need to study for that.
