High School Class of 2018

I got a 1270 on my SAT! I actually went up almost 100 points from my PSAT and I’m really happy because of that. I went up in reading and math but I still need to practice with some of the harder math concepts. I’m definitely going to retake it though to try to get a 1400+ for the schools I’m applying to.

@LeopardFire I’m actually not sure. I know that’s the date my state chose, but I don’t know about other states.

For me:
March - 1st SAT
May - AP exams for APCS, AP Stats, AP Lang, and AP Bio
June - Bio E/M and Math 2 SAT Subject Tests
October - 2nd SAT or 2nd ACT

@ak2018 Thanks! I’m pretty excited. Maybe I’ll see you at Rochester, although I have no doubt you’ll get into VT. Are you going to be taking APCS through FLVS? My online school uses their curriculum and honestly I’m not enjoying APCS that much, but maybe that’s just because my teacher isn’t very helpful and I’m finding it hard to teach myself. Hopefully you have better luck with your teacher because it is a genuinely rewarding class.

So after getting a little discouraged this morning by looking at my SAT score I decided to use that upset into motivation. I take my ACT next week and I think I may be better at it. I was practicing the math section online and out of the 25 or so problems, I missed only 2 (and one of those was such a dumb mistake on my part). Hopefully I do better on my ACT and I already signed up for the march SAT but I think i’m also going to sign up for the next ACT.

I was also thinking about it earlier today, I got horrible sleep the night before. We had a basketball game so I didn’t get home until about 10 and didn’t even get into my shower until midnight that evening, which I regret now. Hopefully better sleep and more preparation next time will help me. Fingers crossed!!!

On the upside of this not so amazing start to my day. I completed a timed essay for APUSH which I feel confident on (first time FRQ but we have done timed DBQ) and found out that I made my first B on my APUSH test (which I normally get C’s on).

Congrats on everyones test results!

@neptuna That’s awesome! I felt the same thing freshman year when I had the realization that I was actually good at astronomy at the science fair.

@DaEmmJay23 Those are good scores! A 790 on the math section is very impressive!

@LeopardFire My school’s test day is one of the two in April.
Here’s how I’m mapping out standardized tests:
April: 1st SAT
May: AP exams for English Language and US History
June: SAT Subject Tests for Math II and Physics
September: 2nd SAT and retake SAT Subject tests if necessary
Having them spaced far apart gives me ample time to study for retakes on Khan Academy without overworking myself.

@Lisa M That’s amazing!

One of my friends/classmates got a 1560 on the SAT. That score is amazing and all, but it makes me feel discouraged that I won’t score that high when I take it in April (1300 on the PSAT and all…). Good thing there’s trusty Khan Academy, which helped me boost my R score 110 points on the PSAT.

Congratulations to everyone who received their scores today! No matter the score, I am sure you all tried your best! <3

So, I got an 800 on my Math Level 2 Subject Test. But this is not the first time I took this test. I also took Bio-M last year and received a very very poor score. That is why I am sacred: do I have to submit all of my scores to colleges or am I able to pick it? I am also planning to get an 800 for Chem and English in May.

Also, I got a 1470 for my first SAT and a 1500 for my second SAT. But I am planning to take another SAT maybe in June. Is it bad that I am taking my 3rd SAT and have 2 bad scores?

Please give me advice! Thank you!!!

I think March/April/May will all be SATs as needed. If I get what I want on March, then I can take April and May off. I will use June for Math 2 and maybe English. I do not plan to take the Bio SAT II because I do not think I would do well on it, nor do I particularly enjoy bio.

@thejoe It depends on the school. Some schools allow Score Choice, which gives you freedom to pick and choose which scores to send in (hence the name). However, some schools (Yale, Stanford, Cornell, etc.) require sending in all scores. I’m sure it won’t look bad as long as you have a considerable improvement (30-50+) next time around, but keep in mind that some students get far better scores on their first sitting and send only that in. If you take the test multiple times, there should be a satisfactory enough margin of improvement to signify that it was worth it.

So I have great news, since it’s apparently Great News Day on this thread!

I got an interview for the NOVEC Youth Tour! I literally submitted the application last Friday too. This will be my first interview. I still have to schedule it, but I’m really excited!

@thejoe Many schools don’t require you to send in all SAT Subject Test scores and allow score choice for those tests.

With the SAT I, it depends on the school like how @Wolfgangbread said it. Some schools (like Stanford, Yale, etc) require it, while other schools (like Harvard, Columbia, etc) don’t require it.

For example, if you apply for Yale (and you seem to have a good shot if that interests you!), you’ll have to send in both your 1470 and 1500 SAT I scores (and the third SAT if you choose to take it), but you can choose to only send the 800 in Math 2 and (hopefully!) an 800 in Chemistry or Literature.

Congrats to everyone with their SAT scores! All these great scores are making me feel pretty motivated for when I take the SAT next week. I also just signed up for the ACT and the subject tests, so here’s my schedule for testing:

April- ACT
May- AP exams for AP Chem, AP Physics 1, APUSH, and AP Lang
June- SAT Subject Tests (Chem and Math 2)

Does anyone have any good advice on how to study for either the Chem or Math 2 exams?

@neptuna I’m going to be taking the class through Virtual Virginia, which is similar to FLVS. I actually asked my school’s teacher what taking AP Comp Science A would be like and she said all they do is watch videos, take notes, and then code. So pretty much I’d be doing the same, but online. The course would require a few days to study the textbook and then doing some coding. I’m going to be learning to code during the summer anyway.

Also, here’s my testing schedule:

March 11th - SAT
April 22nd - Practice SAT (Last Session)
May 6th - SAT Subject Tests (Math Level 2, Chemistry, and Literature)
June - My Last SAT! (Hopefully)
September or October (Optional SAT retake)

I don’t know if everyone knows this but College Board opened up SAT testing dates for August 26th!

@ak2018 I wouldn’t take subject tests right before AP exams! Move those to June and your second SAT to August. I’m wary about the online AP class because quality varies.

@neptuna U of R is really nice! I was their for my HOBY seminar last June, and it was a nice campus. I’m sure you’d love it there!

@ak2018 I was thinking the same thing the other day! If I get in, it’s totally because you even mentioned it haha also in the spot where the app asked “where did you hear about this?” I wrote that a friend on a forum website mentioned it :)) probably a heck of a lot different than the slew of the “my guidance counselor” responses

My testing schedule is currently this:
May: APUSH test, AP Lit test, SAT
June: ACT
August: SAT retake (hopefully don’t need this)
If I feel I need to retake the ACT, I will check out dates during the summer and/or senior year.

It sucks that I’m only able to take the SAT in May, right after both of my AP tests that week. I wasn’t able to take it in January because of a winterguard competition, I can’t take it in March because of my musical, and I can’t take it in June because it’s the same day as my prom and I’m on prom committee so I need to help set up the day before and the day of.

I scored a 1350 on my sat. (690 reading, 660 math, 7/5/6 on essay) this was ok for my first time. Plus the only studying I did was practice tests so I guess it’s alright. I’m taking it again in June- but first I’ll be doing a tutoring course. I’m hoping to score at least a 1470 in June.
I’m so happy for those of you that did well!
My scores are no where where I want them to be but I’ve always know that standardized testings are not my thing. Hopefully I can make up for my low scores somewhere else

Does anyone have any tips for the SAT No Calculator section? I’m finding it difficult to manage my time.

I have a Pre-Calc quiz tomorrow, and I have gotten to the point of procrastination that I have actually started doing other work to avoid studying for it. Tomorrow should be interesting :’)

@solarsystem i used a blue book called “Dr. John Chung’s SAT II math” and it saved my life. Honestly. it drills you on everything and even though i didn’t use a lot of the third i learned for the actual test, it built up so much confidence in me that the actual test was easy. I got an 800 on this test and i can say with full confidence that that book was the reason why.

My testing schedule is

March 11 - Going to take the SAT a second time
May - AP Lit, Chem, and APUSH exams; SAT Subject Chemistry
June - SAT Subject Math 2
after = Finished with all!!

my testing schedule is

march - first SAT
april - second ACT
may - AP lang, physics, apush, bio, calc ab
june - sat subject tests… still undecided but i’m thinking bio e/m, math 2, and latin
august - second SAT
