Hey how important is it to have an AP language credit for competitive colleges? Yikes
I can’t really speak well for AP Chem because my teacher is actually teaching us nothing and not doing much to prepare us for the exam, which sucks cause I was actually looking forward to AP Chem this year. I’m going to basically have to self-study a lot of things during this month and April to make up for the work we should’ve been doing in AP Chem. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I could look at to help me in my situation?
Also on another note, this is my schedule for next year. I’ve changed it like three times but this is what I have finally:
AP Calculus AB (Two periods)
AP Biology (Two Periods)
AP US Government/AP Macroeconomics (Half a semester each)
AP English Literature
Band 4 Honors
@solarsystem I am also in a similar situation. My teacher reads off of very a basic ppt and have been self teaching throughout the year. I just recently found these resources and I’ve found that they are REALLY helpful!!! (For reference, using both, I got a 92%, curved 96%, on my last test on thermodynamics.
The first source can be found on google with “AP Chemistry nmsi” the teacher posted videos an lecture notes for all major topics. They are pretty thorough and surprisingly entertaining.
The second source can be found by searching “Abigail Giordano” on YouTube. This teacher posted videos for every chapter in Chemistry the Central Science(my textbook). I don’t know which textbook you use, but I’m sure the content is the same, perhaps just in a different order.
All of my classes are good except Physics because of how the assignments are done. I have a Physics test tomorrow, and half of it is about random facts from the textbook and videos watched in class :((
Also, my Canadian Physics Class uses Quest from Texas University to “prepare” us for university, but in reality, it caught on quickly that people could just copy and paste the questions from Quest into Google and find out the answer (or plug in numbers into equations without understanding why). Unless that’s commonplace in university, I think quizzes would be better?
For those of you that are taking APUSH, how do you plan to study?
I have AMSCO and I’ve read some of it, but I really don’t think that will be enough for me. Do you make chapter outlines, flash cards, mind map, etc? I don’t know what to do…Typically I find a way to start studying, but then I find a new way and start over to standardize the info format…very unproductive… :-/
@acomfysofa Nigeria
Frankly, you guys have it good compared to us. All we do is write notes, I mean, literally transfer from textbook to notebook without even reading. The teachers keep saying as we should read as we write, but come on, no ome does that. And the worst part is that it counts towards your CA, and exams are only 30%. So you can fail your exams and still comfortably be in the top.
It’s very frustrating. I don’t even have time to study.
Does anyone know how long it should take me to read both of Erica Meltzer’s prep books, which are SAT Reading and SAT Grammar?
My reading needs an overhaul (less so for science/social science/history, more so for literature), and my grammar/writing only needs to be touched up (for me, my strategy before was to pick one of the answers on the SAT practice that sounded right, but that won’t do for an 800!).
I plan on dedicating 1 hour a day to each book, so 2 hours in total. From what I heard, it should take me one month to read both books?
@gigichuck That sounds like what the kids in my host family had to do when I was in El Salvador last summer. It looked like THE WORST, I’m sorry
@snowfairy137 you gotta get used to it. at least now I write like a computer.
Has any of you done any olympiads?
Im about to take the local chem olympiad friday but it won’t go well since I haven’t finished ap chem and don’t have any clue about organic.
how many years of foreign language did you guys take? In middle school(8th grade) I started High School Spanish 1 for high school credits and I’m currently in my second semester of Spanish 4. I’m thinking about continuing on to AP Spanish next year as it would look good on college applications.
Also I am thinking about applying for an executive internship instead that I would be able to leave school everyday after lunch to walk to city hall. There is an interview and long application involved to get accepted.
I am super nervous and conflicted on what I should do that would look better to colleges.
I took up to Mandarin 3. I was planning on taking up to AP Mandarin Chinese but I moved schools and I wasn’t getting anything out of my online class. I took Mandarin 1 in my 8th grade year but it counts as a high school credit because I took it with high schoolers (small private school). Then I took Mandarin 2 freshman year and then Mandarin 3 the first semester of last year. I also went to China this summer so if needed I can speak on my experience getting to use my knowledge in a foreign country. In my personal opinion any amount of foreign language above two years looks like an accomplishment, but I could be completely wrong.
@sewin2music For APUSH I’ve been rereading my notes and making a quizlet with them. It really helps me to make my own quizlet rather than using someone else’s because I have to look at what I’m studying more in-depth. I also watch Crashcourse or Adam Norris. Also there’s a youtube channel, Mrbettsclass , that does parodies of pop songs to history topics. It’s helped me on a few tests actually so thats nice. Lastly, I have a review book I read parts of before the unit tests to get a different style of studying.
To those of you taking APUSH, did you already take US history courses or was this your first? My school is introducing APUSH next year, so I will be taking it as an elective since I enjoy American history. My school splits US history into three courses, one each year from 8th-10th grade. Will it be easier considering I’ve already taken 3 US history courses or will it not make a difference?
Im in Honors Spanish 4 this year and it will be my last year of a foreign language. The reason Im stopping is that my school has an IT program, and I need a certain number of IT credits to be recognized as part of the program. I think you have also think about what you would enjoy most or benefit the most from.
many schools in my city don’t have school tomorrow because almost every house lost power so I don’t have a precalc test anymore!! But it’s kind of scary because almost all of my neighborhood is all black and dark
@carmen00 Where I go APUSH is the first formal U.S. history course. In 5th grade we learned about the American Revolution and in middle school we’d randomly cover topics relating to U.S. history. I think if you feel like you know U.S. history at least decently it will help give you a solid foundation to go more in-depth with.
APUSH isn’t hard, just read, take notes, and you are gold.
No, I definitely wish my school wasn’t so competitive right now. Since our school offers an optional 7th period and a limited amount of APs and Honors, my GPA was penalized for taking an additional non AP/H class. Considering I’m a DE student now, this is even more true because my grades are on a completely different scale. Average school GPA and stuff just became useless.
On the other hand, having competitive students led to interesting classes and unique study groups. Fortunately our school doesn’t give out class rank or I’d worry about my classmates becoming cut throat.
