High School Class of 2018

@soccer1235 @aspiringgirl Yeah, I definitely agree that they are on the same playing field. NIH SIP might be a little tougher to get into, but they are still essentially the same.

@carmen00 Yeah that is definitely tricky. I am asking my computer science teacher, because he would have had me for three years by then, and that is what I want to major in. As for my other rec, I am kind of convicted. I would ask my Spanish teacher who has had me for two years, but I am quitting Spanish next year and I do not know how she would feel. I could also ask my english teacher, but she does not know me that well.

I have one really good LOR locked down, but a second one is going to be really hard to find especially because you are supposed to get one from STEM and one from a humanities teacher.

@Lisa M I am going into communications, but the English department at my school is really messy. Teachers come for one year and then leave, making our school hire a brand new set every year. Only one of the English teachers has lasted from my freshman year until now. It’s really annoying because we have no real English curriculum. Many students are taking AP English Lit next year yet they still don’t know how to analyze a book or how to use basic grammar. It’s a mess.

Does NIH SIP get a stipend? And yeah it is really helpful that I can live at home cause then I can go do stuff with friends over weekends like go to KI or things like that.

@aspiringgirl have you received anything from NIDDK so far? It says primary contact staff has not been assigned, so maybe once they have all their participants they will start sending stuff.

@Soccer1235
I received another email from my site coordinator today. She just basically told me that she is emailing me a welcome packet, and she attached a student profile for me to fill out.

The bad thing is that this is my back up summer program. Idk if I got into my top choice summer program yet.

Well that might be a small problem cause you did accept the offer @aspiringgirl what is your top choice?

@Soccer1235 LEDA

Does anyone know when the SAT scores will be released for the March1st test date?

Scratch what I said earlier regarding my courses for next year. My mom and I talked and we changed it to have courses that she and I thought suited me better for next year.
AP French
AP English Literature
AP Calculus AB
Photography/Digital Art
Astronomy
Band

@Soccer1235 Yeah, we get a stipend, about $4,000. But housing is going to be expensive.

Ah ok @aspiringgirl hopefully you hear back soon
and yeah @Tobster18 it will be quite a hassle to find housing and food hopefully you find an easy way to arrange all of that

About a week ago, I found out that one of my teachers who I planned to write a LOR is moving across the country. It’s going to be a headache getting those letters sent in when I can only communicate with them through email. For my other LOR that teacher doesn’t accept any requests until school starts in the fall. I’m trying to think of another teacher as a backup but I have an outside LOR from my doctor since I’m mentoring/interning with him later on this year.

@madison2000 This may not be entirely accurate depending on what colleges you are looking for, but I feel like schools prefer/require teachers. I know you can submit outside LOR for some places, but I’ve also heard that AOs don’t like to read more than they have to so if the outside LOR isn’t a 10/10 it might hurt you.

I think it definitely depends on the school I am applying to. For my top choices, maybe like top 5, I’ll send in the outside LOR. For the other schools I’ll just send my teacher(s) LOR. It also will depend on how hard the school is to get into. For my doctor, he’s an alumni of one of the schools I am applying to, therefore I am for sure sending his LOR to that school.

@Texas1820 I called today and they said April 13th

Matriculate is a great resource. I would highly recommend it for anyone that makes less than 80k. I just had my first meeting with my advisor and she is so nice.

ugghhh I’m going through here and looking at your guys’ APs and crying because my school only offers 3 APs (Calc AB and BC and Stats) and sometimes BC doesn’t run :frowning: Everything else is through like 4 different local colleges so I’m probably not going to be able to get transfer credit for most of them. Here’s my schedule for next year as an example:

Chemistry I (Southwest State University-Marshall)
Intermediate German I and II (University of Minnesota-TC)
History of Western Civilization (University of Northwestern-St. Paul)
Political Science (Southwest State)
Intro to Music (Mankato State)
AP Statistics
AP Calc BC
plus band, British Literature, and Intro to Engineering. My school very strongly discourages students from registering for more than 3 college level classes per semester but I have like 4-5. Although honestly some of them are apparently so easy it’s kind of a joke (looking at you Intermediate German and PoliSci!). Western Civ is online and Stats is partially online so I should hopefully be able to do my work Sunday evenings and use those hours as study halls.

@kassh4 I wasn’t lying! Matriculate is AMAZING. My mentor helped me with Questbridge essays and told me the best way I can talk to my parents about specific schools. It’s like having a big sibling that has already been through the college app process. Is your mentor from Notre Dame too? Both my sister and I got mentors from that school.
