High School Class of 2018

Do any of you guys have any tips for science fair? I really want to make it to state this year (I’ve been third and fourth before, but that’s not enough for advancing to state)

@acomfysofa idk how close you are to Boston but if you’re realllllllllllly close like 1 hour it might be an option. Don’t forget about customs, flight check in, and all that, and keep in mind that tests start at 8 so youd probably have to fly in the night before and sleep somewhere with a parent cause idk if hotels will let you check in by yourself. They might. If you’re in a different time zone forget it.

If it were me I would look into getting my parents or someone to drive me to a neighboring province to take the test. How far is that? Another option is to fly somewhere in Canada you have family and stay with them the night before the test. Customs are a pain. Idk though, i have no idea where you live. (I personally live 3 hours drive from British Columbia but unless I want to go skiing that isn’t very helpful)

Do you guys think I should even start the Quest bridge app right now? I know it’s due tomorrow, but I already have most of the essays and a teacher ready to recommend me at the ready (he already has my general recommendation on file). I got so caught up with other apps and acceptances I got that I almost forgot about it.

@ak2018 definitely. You never know. If it doesn’t work out, fine, but if it does, you’ll be really happy

@ak2018 If you have already put significant work into it, then you have nothing to lose.

I was invited to apply to my school’s NHS, which is great, but what’s not so great is that I have to list activities that describe service and leadership. I almost would rather write an essay. Its kinda hard to show leadership when you have social anxiety… Also, I think the teachers in charge of selecting students are from the math department, my worst subject! I’ve been showing up for a help a lot recently for Pre-Calc, though, so hopefully she will vouch for me if need be.

For the girls on this thread, what are your opinions on all-girl schools? I’m considering applying to Mount Holyoke and Simmons.

@LeopardFire I think it totally depends on personality and preference. I would personally not go to an all girls school because a lot of my friends are guys, and I can’t imagine a learning experience without them. Also, the field I want to go into is male dominated. However, all girls schools can present unique opportunities, and both schools are really good on their own. What else about the school makes you want to go there?

So after promising myself that I would complete the Questbridge College application and then looking at all the essays I would have to complete in such a short amount of time, I have decided its highly unlikely I’ll complete the application on-time. It was a valiant effort, but the awards page KILLED me. :)) But yeah, I mean, I’ve gotten into a few programs already, so I’m pretty okay, even though I kind of feel like I blew my chances for the Questbridge senior program a little. But yeah, I hope someone on this thread gets in. And I wouldn’t say it was a waste of time at all. In fact, the application itself actually made me stop disliking our class’s predicted valedictorian. Before, I always thought he was just a slightly obnoxious genius who goes on the occasional expensive ski-trip and pretty much takes as many AP classes as possible to raise his GPA and his ego, sorta like me :)) But after looking at his application with him, since he wanted a little help with it, I saw his story was a lot deeper. He was the child of an illegal immigrant and had a pretty wild childhood similar to mine. We were actually quite similar in a lot of ways, both of us wanting to go into STEM careers. After I had gotten into SAMS, it seems like he respects me more too. Like he sees that I’m more knowledgeable than I lead on. All year, it felt like we were in a “Cold-War” like competition with each other, but now it seems as if the hostility is starting to dissipate a bit. He was actually kind of clueless about the summer programs and asked me more about them today. Despite him being the likely valedictorian, I still offered to help him. I think a friendship might be brewing. I’m definitely rooting for him to get in!

Being accepted/rejected from Questbridge College Prep has nothing to do with the Questbridge Match Program for next year. So don’t beat yourself up @ak2018

New York @frazzledazzle I’m pretty nervous because I don’t know anyone that’s been before so I have no idea what it’ll be like!!!

Do any of you know who you are going to ask for your recommendation letters? I’m sort of shy in class. I had one teacher that I really connected to sophomore year, and then she moved to another school district. I have no idea who I am going to ask for my letters. I might ask my debate coach and my newspaper adviser because I am much more out-spoken in my ECs than I am in class. I’m not sure yet.

@carmen00 I’m the same way! I’m not really the one to get super close to teachers, so I probably won’t have glowing recs. I was talking to my social studies teacher, tho, and he says he always gives awesome recommendations so I’ll just have to hope that’ll work. But I’m not sure about asking your EC leaders because I know that a lot of the time the recs have to come from a core teacher from the 10th/11th grade. If they are tho then definitely go for it

@carmen00 I have asked my APUSH teacher already but I tend to be either silent or incredibly social in classes with no median. She said she would write my application later during this school year and I have two more teachers in mind including an EC teacher. One thing I was thinking about was asking many teachers for recommendation letters and picking and choosing which ones to send, but I am not sure if thats ethical or allowed.

@lindsgal The beauty of that is that you’ll meet new friends!

@ivakk one was my 10th grade bio teacher and the other is my current social studies teacher. I’ve done well in both classes, but they both know me more from outside of class. I’m hoping that they could write good recommendations because they can speak to how I do both in and out of class.

@LeopardFire i used to be on the fence about all-girls schools but now i really like them (especially…wellesley…hahaha) i’ve heard really awesome things about them!!

@carmen00 that would definitely work then!

I finished by Questbridge CP application last night and @ak2018 ur right, that awards page is really a killer. But i know a lot of people at my school who didnt eo the QB CP but still got matched senior year, so youll be fine (one of my friends got matched to yale, and he didnt do the college prep program!). This is my final summer program application, so im happy to finally be done with it!

@LeopardFire i think i would be fine at an all girls school tbh. Most of my friends are girls and i feel most comfortable around them, but im not really looking at any atm

I had a guidance appointment this morning and I decided on my schedule for next year. It’s not what I was hoping it was going to be, but compromises had to be made.

If we participate in NIDDIK’s STEP-UP we get a $2,500 stipend!!!
Plus it is not lower ranked than NIH SIP.
The only difference is that we are not conducting research on NIH’s campus and we are underserved minorities. At the end of the summer, we have to go to NIH and present our research at a huge banquet.
The women I emailed even called it NIH STEP-UP.
