Hey guys. So I am registering to take calc over the summer (wich is a little bit less than a 2 month course) so I can take even more rigorous math classes senior year. As I was registering I noticed how long the classes are: 5 hours, two times a week! This means I will have to dedicate 10 hours a week to calculus even before my junior year ends (class starts 5/30, and junior year ends 6/7. Ohhhh gosh, I hope this goes well. :-<
What are some good scholarships to apply junior year?
I GOT INTO NIH SIP!!!
I’m happy because I just realized I only have 10 AP Stats lessons left. I could technically finish by next week.
Qualified for the final round of Math olympiad in my country!!! Just behind the six that went last year - all boys. I could potentially be the first girl to qualify. scared and excited at the same time.
congrats @Tobster18 you finally got an acceptance. you deserve it. Lots of positivity and motivation on this thread.
P.S any other international students?
@apple1893 It isn’t actually that much time considering it’s a summer course. I’m more worried about the fact that it’s five hours twice a week instead of the hours being spread more apart. When I took geometry it was three hours five times a week. The local CC does 3.5 hours four times a week during the summer for calc.
I have a dilemma. My dream school is UPenn, which recommends two SAT 2s (physics and engineering for my major). However, my physics class has done nothing to prepare me. I asked and they said this:
“As they are not required materials, not submitting them will not hurt your application. A strong supplementary test score submission will only help you as an applicant.”
Honestly, sounds fake. What do you guys think? Should I give it my best shot, or focus on doing well on the Physics 1 AP test in May?
I GOT INTO GIRLS STATE!!! I’m so freaking excited! Hopefully I don’t get into the SSP program in New Mexico, otherwise I’d have to choose between the two.
Also, we had a blood drive at my school today and I donated blood for the first time! It actually hurt less than I thought! The only downside is that my arm has been feeling weak and has been trying to fall asleep. If you haven’t donated blood before and want to, you should!
@frazzledazzle I’m going to girls state too! What state are you from?
@Lisa M Focus on doing well on the AP test and I think you would do fine on the subject test. The college board has a practice online test. I’ve just started Physics Mechanics and I found the practice question pretty logical. Despite not having learned anything about light, electricity, and magnetism, I got the question right through logic 3/4 of the time.
omg @Tobster18 congrats!!! i heard this program is amazing and most kids from this go on to amazing colleges. I mean it’s the NIH, definitely major!
and congrats @frazzledazzle !! i don’t know much about Girls State (maybe we don’t have it in NJ idk…we have NJ Scholars and good Gov Schools though), but based on CC it seems really prestigious and fun! Is it STEM related or more like politics or debate?
and @Lisa M wait does UPenn SEAS require physics? gotta check the website now! I’m reallyyy interested in their computational bio major there…but I also only took physics I at my school (equivalent to AP Physics B) and I don’t like physics…
EDIT: okay I just checked and it just says “preferably physics” for Engineering…
do you think this applies to ALL applicants to SEAS? esp. since SEAS also has Applied Sciences? Plus computational bio doesn’t really have any physics…
@frazzledazzle What exactly is Girls State? I saw something about it on my school’s announcements but I wasn’t sure what it was.
Hey guys! Today was meh. I woke up late and since my parents are out of town, I toke some coins and rode the public bus to school. I still made it on time.
Also, I got rejected for the US News Scholarship! But it’s okay, because the SAMS program acceptance is still keeping me on my toes.
I also called Carnegie Mellon and they said that I should be recieving an admissions packet any day now containing all the info I need to know.
@Tobster18 CONGRATS!! That’s awesome that it worked out, and that’s probably more prestigious than the NIDDK Step up, as SIP is open to all races and financial statuses. Hopefully you have an awesome experience there and I’ll probably see you at the summer symposium!!
I didn’t apply cause there would be no way that my parents would let me live in DC (I think) by myself lmao
@soccer1235 Thanks. It definitely took a lot of convincing before my parents agreed to let me apply. I feel like it may be a little scary at first but I think it will help me prepare for college.
I got an interview for LEDA! I have a really high chance of getting in at this point and I feel this huge sense of relief. Really scared, but fingers crossed.
@lindsgal I’m from the great state of Maine! You?
@LushLillies @carmen00 Girl’s State is like Boy’s State (idk if you have that). The participants spend a week at a college in their state (we spend the night in dorms and eat college food all week!) where they participate in mock government (legislature, judicial things, governorship stuff, bill writing and passing, elections, etc.) and learn about government on the town, county, and state levels. Participants also take classes where they learn about government and politics.
@LushLillies Yeah I am in the same boat. I definitely want to major in computer science, which does not really utilize physics. Their email isn’t really clear, but I plan on going back during spring break for a second visit and I will make sure I get a good answer at that point. I am really conflicted at the moment, but we’ll see.
Also, I had my girls state interview today!! It went really well, and I am one of only five people they wrote back to interview for two spots. April is either gonna be a really good or really bad month for me in terms of acceptances/rejections.
Yo, so I got an acceptance I while back from a local college to be eligible to take classes there… Not a big acceptance but hey, it said “Congratulations!” B-)
Today I did my school work. Can I get a congratulations? Just kidding! I am super happy for all of you. In all sincerity you all really inspire and motivate me to reach higher.
