High School Class of 2018

Just read through this section about Ulysses S. Grants election in the American Pageant and came across this:

Why should the ballot be in the hands of the grateful freedman? Because Republicans could not take future victories “for Granted.”

Perfect.

@Hamlon I love Pomona too! I am kind of on the fence about applying because I’m trying to cut my list down/be realistic.

I also visited Virginia Tech today. The students there are really nice. Like scarily nice. Their engineering school is really really good, but I don’t know how I feel about the location.

for all the smart and buff people out there, tell me how to get good gainz and good grades

Yo if you guys are bored read through this thread. It’s such a good read: put a smile on my face.

@kassh4 I saw when this thread first started! It’s been some time, so I have some catching up to do. :-B Can you imagine what their house is like right now? RIP to their parents’ bank accounts.

@kassh4 @Hamlon I read the first few pages and I would just like to say that whatever their parents are doing, they’re doing right! =D> Lol, that thread is like reading a story or watching a reality show. :))

Those kids are quite impressive, I wish I could have the wealth of college choices that they have (although, seeing as one got a scholarship for holding part time job and they got fee waivers, my life situation is probably much easier than theirs, so they worked much, much harder for those colleges)

@kassh4 That thread is amazing! I can’t wait to see where they all go.

This is so scary. I am scared to apply to college

I had a breakdown tonight about paying for college. I have a really bad headache now and I’m still stressed. My parents tried to help but they really don’t know anything about the process. They don’t even know when I start applying to college, so their confusion about the financial aid process is making me even more nervous. I just hope one college is affordable.

@carmen00 Do you qualify for a Matriculate advisor? I think the upper income limit is like 80,000. Really awesome program. My advisor has already helped me out a lot and we only had one phone call and a couple texts.

@solarsystem Cool! Thanks! I’m procrastinating… I either totally know and totally don’t know what I will do for the writing prompts…other things are just meh.

@Hamlon @carmen00 Not too long ago we had a Ivy League and local private school alum come and talk to the more ambitious members of the junior class about top, need-blind schools. She said that people in my state have a problem with applying to UCs we cannot afford and only applying to schools in familiar places like Boston and New York. Most of the people at my school go to a state funded 4- or 2-year college, and almost never go to a liberal arts school like Grinnell, for example. Then she proceeded to tell us that we should apply to these top need-blind schools (pull up the list w/ a Google search) because they’re just as good–or even better than UCLA and NYU we only supposedly know about and that Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore and other similar schools most students at that meeting haven’t heard about because they want students from my state (lesser represented western state) and therefore will be easier to get into. Overall the students in my school and state who do well on SAT/ACT are the ones who leave for top schools, but generally most people are very “Huh?” about even Dartmouth, Wash U, and Rice, and even more so for liberal arts schools.Sorry this is so long but I just thought it was interesting and I go to one of the better publics in my state, but she said it also happens at private schools.

Apparently I’ve been looking at plane ticket prices to the USA, and prices weren’t as bad as I previously thought. For the SAT August test date for internationals, it’s actually an option for me to fly down to the USA to take the SAT @-)

How sane does it sound for me to take a non-stop flight from Canada to Boston, take an Uber from the BOS airport to an SAT test center, take and finish the SAT, then take an Uber to the BOS airport and fly back to Canada? I’ll be taking the SAT in August, which is a US-only test date.

All of this will be a little more than double the cost of an SAT here in Canada, which is really surprising! An international SAT in Canada is about $150. Flying round-trip from Canada to Boston with a non-stop flight, taking the SAT (without an international test fee), and Ubering around Boston will altogether cost about $350 (including taxes!). And I’ll be taking the test late in August, where I’ll already have June, July, and August to study for the SAT.

Not sure if this would actually be feasible, but who knows :)) . Why not just wait to take the SAT in October/November/December? I’m applying for EA at a school, and since the CollegeBoard only gives the SAT 1 on certain months for internationals, if I don’t take the August test date then I’ll only have one shot at the SAT and that’ll be October (and I don’t feel comfortable taking only one attempt at the SAT :frowning: )

Edit: Can’t take an Uber as an under 18 year old, but Lyft allows it with parental approval. Guess I’ll be Lyfting around instead if I decide to go with this plan!

@bubblylaugh Lol. No one’s talked to us about paying for college and my school’s title 1 (low-income). I feel like virtually everyone stays in state, which is amplified by automatic admission. Less than 10-20 students (out of 550+) are out applying to top schools and even then most of them are applying to UT, Rice, SMU, or shudder Baylor. I know the last 2 are extremely expensive even for those on scholarship. I wish my school encouraged kids to apply to a wider range of schools, but they don’t.

@acomfysofa: Two words “flight delays.” Two more words: “Travel fatigue.”

Also, that’s a ridiculous amount of money to pay to take the SATs.

@Hamlon but Baylor offers loads of scholarships. I know 3 people who went there on full rides. Check out this scholarship estimator: https://www.baylor.edu/estimator/index.php

I considered Baylor, but their scandals changed my mind.

@carmen00 You wanted to know about Emerson, right? I had my tour on Saturday.

Pros:

  • Endless professional opportunities, there are TV studios at the school, they produce their own magazines, papers, TV shows, and plays/musicals (they own several theaters), they have their own awards show judged by professionals, lots of classes are essentially field work
  • If you have a C or higher average in four years of math or get a 550 on the SAT math section, you don’t need to take a math course
  • You can take classes from a few other colleges in the area that pertain to the arts/entertainment
  • Study abroad in their castle at the Netherlands, their LA facility, Washington DC, and more

Cons:

  • The “campus” consists of a few buildings on the same street, not really a campus at all
  • No guaranteed housing for upperclassmen
  • Seems very intense, I didn’t see anything about just for fun clubs or extracurriculars, everything seemed to circle back to professional endeavors, we didn’t even get to see a dining hall or rec room

Overall, I’m torn:
-I feel like I’d be stupid not attend if I got in and could afford it, but it seems to lack the ~college experience~.
-Their Writing, Literature, and Publishing major and Political Communications major are both right up my alley, but they turned out not to be what I want, I wouldn’t have many other options to turn to. They strictly focus on the arts, entertainment, and oratory disorders.

-I would get an experience like no other, and almost certainly graduate career-ready, but I fear I would be lost in the chaos of what seems to be a sink-or-swim environment.

@LeopardFire ah thank you! I kinda have the same feeling about it not being a “real college experience.” It’s like, I want to work hard in college so I can get a good job that I love and I know Emerson is a great school to help me do that, but at the same time, the college isn’t giving you the typical college experience. Thank you for all your information!

@carmen00 I’m happy to help! I forgot to mention that there is an additional essay if you apply for their honors program. Those who get in receive a half-tuition scholarship, but you have to take several honors exclusive courses, and create a 60 page research paper by the end of your senior year.
