@ChemistryKing7 Welcome to the other side!
@LeopardFire If you search up “SAMS at Carnegie Mellon”, you should find what you’re looking for
I’ve decided that I will be doing the NIDDK STEP UP program this summer! Hopefully @Tobster18 you get in during the second wave and @aspiringgirl I hope to meet you (and @Tobster18 if you get in) at the Summer Symposium if you choose to do this program!
@Hamlon thank you for the insight! texas is quite far though so I would have to absolute love a place. my parents think St. Louis would be too much of a “culture shock” for me, even, and are trying to get me to cross off WUSTL. I might, just because I know they like when students demonstrate interest, but it’s soo far away that I can’t visit…I’m visiting Chicago over break, and I tried to plan a visit to St. Louis from there, but the bus costs a ton and is like 6 hours or something absurd. So I guess I’ll never know what it’s like there…
Hi @ChemistryKing7 !! lol I was a lurker for over a month before starting to comment …
and that’s super cool @Soccer1235 ! where is NIDDK located? and is it research?
I feel like all of these programs you guys are listing are for minorities…which I am unfortunately not considered :)) oh well! I already have my summer worked out anyway, but this is the first time I feel like there are more URMs than Asian pals on a CC thread :))
@LushLillies I can actually do the research locally but at the end of the summer I get the opportunity to go to the NIH campus in D.C. with a poster and present my work
Since my class-wide SAT day is coming up in a few weeks (holy cow), I got an email today saying that I’m registered for the SAT. Now I am freaking out because it’s coming up so soon and I am nowhere near where I want to be in regards to preparation for the exam. In the end I want to score between a 1400 and a 1500, but I think I’ll get around a 1350. There’s always room for improvement. It’s insane how close we’re getting to college apps. Lurking on r/ApplyingtoCollege this week I came to the realization that I’ll be receiving decisions for UChicago, MIT, and CWRU (if I don’t do EA) in exactly a year from this week. Holy cow. 3:-O
@LushLillies Asian here, but first gen. I feel you on WashU; another way to express interest would be to sign up for their mailing list and/or attend any info meetings they have at your school.
In other words, I’m ridiculously excited for SciOly states. It’s held at Caltech, and my inner nerd is geeking out with absolute joy. I also got accepted to do a paid research internship this summer at Kaiser Permanente!
@Kelvin82 Can you describe Caltech and its environment to me after SciOly states? I’m highly considering applying (although I have a very small chance of getting in) and won’t be able to get all the way to Pasadena before doing so.
Good luck, have fun, and congrats on the internship!
@Hamlon I live in Houston and actually I feel as if Austin and Dallas are more liberal but that is just an observation…
Update on the APCS teacher situation: So, I called tech support last night and explained the situation. He said it was really weird what was happening and wrote an email to my teacher confirming that I couldn’t access the instructions. I guess that woke her up because she finally, finally set up an account for me and sent me the login information. I’m really happy that I don’t have to go to the principal about this, but I’m still peeved by the unnecessary stress it caused me. Oh well.
@aspiringgirl @Soccer1235 And, I got rejected. The email came in today and said due to the incomplete status of my application I was not even considered. So that sucks.
@Tobster18
That sucks. I hope you get into NIH SIP.
@Tobster18 That sucks
I would be furious if I were in your situation and yeah hopefully you get into something else!!
I’ve been so MIA but I’m finally on Spring Break (go back on 28th)!
@Tobster18 daww…hope something falls through for you, though!
Third quarter has very quickly come and gone by and I might not get a weighted GPA of at least a 4.0, but on the bright side (I guess?) I’ve taken both the ACT and SAT!
I’m just happy about getting to sleep in as much as I want to rn even though I have a few assignments I have to do over break.
Over the summer, I think I am going to take a course–probably Psychology, maybe Philosophy or Microbio–at the local state flagship. I’m also going to apply for QuestBridge College Prep Scholars! fingers crossed
@frazzledazzle I watched the Crash Course Computer Science video about Binary and my mind was indeed blown! :))
@ChemistryKing7 I believe I spoke with you before on GroupMe
@Tobster18 I’m really sorry that happened to you! I’d be really mad at that. Did they not even notify you that your app was incomplete?
@bubblylaugh How’s your questbridge app going so far? Also there’s a forum I created for it if you wanted to check it out: goo (dot) gl/zY5FaK
@minimango Really, I’ve always felt like Dallas/Houston are about the same politically, but that our suburbs are both really conservative. Austin for sure beats everyone by a landslide.
Anyone here applying to any LACs next year? Pomona’s my first choice and I might even ED. I’ve fallen in love with its extreme cultural/economic diversity and accesible consortium(Harvey Mudd is literally across the street.) I hope I can go to the diversity weekend in the fall! [-O<
The sad thing is so few people know about it in my state that they assume it’s some sort of community college or low-level school. :-/
@hamlon Most schools I’m applying to are fairly large, but still, people don’t know what these schools are. Most kids only know of the Ivies, the huge football schools, and some local schools. The majority of students don’t even leave the state, so schools like Boston University are foreign to them. When I say that I’m retaking the SAT after getting a 1350, people are super surprised and I have to explain that these schools are actually pretty selective.
@Hamlon yeah honestly Houston and Dallas are similar but I think Dallas is more liberal because it is more of a melting pot. Not that Houston is not though. But yeah, Austin has liberal written all over it… haha
