*casually reads all posts. Lots of positive vibes floating around here, so I just dropped by to steal some.
I’m hoping I get to qualify for the IMO, because that’s my biggest dream, but I’m not so sure.
I’m applying to YYAS and YYGS and maybe PROMYS, but I’m staring at that one long and hard, doing a couple of probability calculations and coming up with 0.000…0001, which is sad.
Still, congrats to everyone who got into summer programs and other programs. Keep up the good vibes.
@neptuna I would go to the principal or a guidance counselor. It really isn’t fair for you to suffer in the class if the teacher is causing you a lot of problems.
So I just finished taking a practice ACT. Most students at my school only take the SAT, but I figured I’d try the ACT as I have nothing to do. I actually did better on that without any practice than I did on the SAT. So I will probably take that also.
@Hamlon I haven’t looked into Rice, but I have researched Duke and I would definitely not fit in there (sports are too good lol, not urban). I’m not sure how I would fare in Texas. I’m very much an east-coast gal in personality, interests, political views for the most part…I don’t want to stereotype Texas without visiting it first, so Imma stop here
I was thinking of applying to UPitt (my #1 safety school) very early as it has rolling, and then going from there! Thank you for the advice!
@neptuna I think you need to report this! whether to your counselor or principal. it’s not just about the one grade, it’s about future grades too…and your relationship with your teacher!
@LushLillies I know the feeling with Texas. Honestly, the larger cities are where you’ll be fine. Some of those back-road 1 mile long ghost towns though… Houston and Austin are the best college towns in the state for more liberal-minded people. Dallas, not that much. Liberal city, but fewer schools worth coming from out-of-state for. I guess SMU counts, but it attracts students that are extremely wealthy and preppy. UTD is really nerdy and pre-professional focused, but it gives out A LOT of merit aid.
ATTENTION: All of Carnegie Mellon’s Summer Programs for Diversity application deadlines have been extended. If you still want to apply, do so as soon as possible. It will likely be open until all spots are filled!
Want some motivation? I got in with a 3.18UW/3.44W GPA and 1220 PSAT score. I had a bunch of extra-curriculars and pretty great essays. I didn’t even have to explain my bad freshman year grades. They really want kids similar to me. Their slogan is “Making good students excellent!” for a reason. @Hamlon and I got in, I hope to see more of you.
@ak2018 I watched the CrashCourse CS video on binary this afternoon and it blew my mind! I loved binary beforehand but I love it even more now and want to read more about it. I didn’t know CS could be this cool (I’m sticking to physics, astronomy, and maybe calc, though. lol)
I would make sure to check out who Carnegie Mellon wants for their summer programs. If your not a URM or a first generation college student, (aka me, its probably not worth your time to apply). Also, the classes you guys posted that you’ll be taking sound like stuff I’ve already done. I’m also feeling a bit burnt out and want to spend my summer working and doing college apps and my personal projects and stuff. So, while I’m extremely happy for you and think you’ll have a blast this summer, I think its important to remember that not every summer program is for everyone.
@solarsystem Those we’re examples of subjects I’m passionate about, not necessarily CrashCourse subjects (although CrashCourse Calculus would be cool).
@snowfairy137 That’s true. These kinds of programs do have specific audiences. My PSA and motivational message was mainly for all the lurkers and others on this thread who don’t feel like they’re good enough for a program like this. If it weren’t for people on this thread encouraging me to apply to programs like SAMS, I wouldn’t have likely applied. Now that I got in, I guess I’m paying it forward. But in the end, you’re in control of your own summer. Do what you want to do.
Apparently, this happened a couple months ago, but a student at one of the bigger high schools in my province wasn’t able to attend a Model UN at Harvard university because of the work-to-rule protest from a little while back. Sad
I just found out that I have two field trips comping up! Both are in DC. One is the American History Museum, another is an art museum.
I also agree with @snowfairy137 on the whole burned out thing. Thats why I am saving a portion of my summer for fun things like sleeping in and hiking idk. I feel like senior year is going to be stressful physically and emotionally, so its important to take time to unwind and mentally prepare yourself for the last year of high school( I can’t believe Im saying that)
@ak2018 speaking of lurkers, I guess now is a pretty good chance to introduce myself! Hi everyone! Just like this thread suggests I’m a junior in high school and I’ve been lurking this thread and the African American forums a lot. So, yeah, hi!
Hi, I’m back from the dead! I think it’s been nearly two weeks since I’ve gone on here? ^^’
To make a long story short, my Pre-Calc teacher put in a missing assignment of mine as 0, so I thought I had a D-. With that in mind I didn’t even want to look at anything related to colleges, since I thought I had screwed myself out of getting into UConn or really any good schools. It was a bit of an overreaction, but that’s just how I am… I found out today that my teacher thought I never handed it in. She’s going to let me redo it if she can’t find the assignment, so everything worked out!
In relation to academic things, I took the National Latin Exam today! It could have gone better, but it definitely could have gone worse. Anyone who medals on this or the CT Latin Exam doesn’t have to take the final, so I’m hoping if I didn’t get there with the NLE, I will with the next one.
Also, I’m going to visit Emerson on Saturday! There are a lot of schools that I may apply to in Boston (Simmons and Emmanuel are on my radar) but this would be my first choice by far.
@ak2018 I’m sorry if you already explained earlier, but what is SAMS? I googled it and could only find things about Sam’s Club. x)
@neptuna Did you ask about the login information before? If the teacher isn’t giving it out for some reason, you should definitely go your guidance counselor or principal.
