High School Class of 2018

@frazzledazzle that’s true, but i’m just thinking about the time it would take to write the essays and stuff but I guess it could possibly be worth it, you know?

@ivakk My mentality regarding top-tier schools is that you have a higher chance of getting in if you apply than if you don’t. The time needed to apply to the Harvard-type schools is worth it in the long run because you could get in and that’d be amazing.
I’ll be in the same boat as you next year if you decide to apply to Harvard.

I want to apply to MIT and Carnegie Mellon and probably will even though there’s probably no way I could afford it and there are schools I could literally go to for almost free. Idk, stupid but hey if I get in I can always say, “yah, I got into MIT, nbd” lol

I kinda want to apply to some schools for bragging rights, but I really don’t want to waste money on app fees and score sends. Plus, I’ll feel incredibly bad if I get into a school that I don’t even care to go to while someone else in my school gets rejected. But to most kids in my school, Lehigh is a top school. Most students don’t even bother to dream about the Ivy league.

The quote “You miss 100% of shots you don’t take” rings especially true for the college process. If I don’t apply to my reaches, then I would never know if I could get in. I know it might take a lot of time to complete apps, and the rejection might hurt temporarily, but it wouldn’t compare to the regret I would feel if I didn’t take the chance. Also, I picked “safety” schools that I would be very happy going to. I have the assurance that no matter where I end up, I will be happy and I will get a degree.

@LushLillies Have you considered Duke and Rice? Also, there’s no reason to apply to a ton of safeties.Pick an early action or rolling admission school you know you’d enjoy attending and have at it. You want as much time as you can get to work on essays for your match/reach schools. Quality over quantity. Essays are the single most important part of an application and you don’t need to distract yourself with supplements for schools you won’t even attend.

@frazzledazzle is Harvard the only ivy/top tier school you’re applying to?

But it’s gonna be extremely nerve-wracking in a years time when we’re the ones getting decisions back, but hopefully the whole process won’t be too horrible

@ivakk I’m also thinking of applying to Yale, MIT, Caltech, and maybe UChicago or Tufts (I really need to narrow those down, I know).
Hopefully.

casually turns assignment in 7 minutes before its due for online class thing TO BE FAIR I’VE TURNED EVERYTHING IN ON TIME THUS FAR. like within an hour of it being due… what is time management?

Response: I really want to go to MIT/Carnegie Mellon as they would be incredible fits academics wise, so I would totally go there if I could so I’m kinda holding out hope for a miracle. Also, if you don’t accept any school they just take someone off the waiting list so really no harm done, except for the app fee.

so there’s currently 154 people in my aerospace class… but 11 haven’t been on in 2 weeks or more so missed the lesson deadline. That’s 143 serious competitors for 120 spots in the summer program… so 84% chance I’ll get in!!

I finished a good 10-15 minutes early on the US History SAT II. Way faster than Math 2.

I’m going to apply to MIT and Caltech, but I already known I won’t get in.

@snowfairy137 I’ve turned in things at most a week late for the online class. It started after Module 5 and has turned into a nasty little habit. I’ve only turned in two APA papers late. I’m going to try and work on a lot of it today. Since I got into SAMS, I likely won’t be able to go to the NASA summer academy. But I’m still motivated to complete the course because of the college credit.

I made semi-finals for Girls State! I have my interview in a week and I’m kinda nervous and kinda excited at the same time. Does anyone have any interview tips?

I am planning to apply to my safety in September so that I know where I stand early.

I am applying to MIT, RPI, and Carnegie Mellon… My top is MIT (of course) but each of them are great fits!

@PulseStar Dude same.

OMG @Lisa M, I didn’t know you applied to Girls State. I applied to Boys State and our interview is next Saturday. I would say to prepare for typical questions such as why you’d be a good candidate for the program. Good Luck!

Getting into SAMS has pretty much changed a large chunk of my life. I feel like, for once, I’m a lot smarter than I think. My schedule for next year has changed because of this!

World History and Geography from 1500
AP Economics
AP Physics C
U.S./VA Government
AP Calculus BC
GEMS 12 (Philosophy)/Study Hall
AP English Literature

AP Computer Science A (Online)

I plan to study really hard for Calc while I’m there.

It’s also changed my college list quite a bit.

Since we’ll be taking an SAT prep course, I’ve decided to move my 2nd SAT to the August 26th date. I’ll still take my subject tests in May. Now I know I shouldn’t rely on the SAT prep course to raise my score, but I’m not really doing that much prep now, so it’s worth a shot.

Will Apply To: Virginia Tech, UVA, GMU, and JMU
Considering Applying To: Boston University (BU), Carnegie Mellon, MIT (Only if I get higher than a 1300 on the SAT)

High Reach: BU, UVA, Carnegie Mellon, MIT
Reach: Virginia Tech
Safeties: GMU and JMU

But yeah, I feel great about this whole thing.

I need advice. I’m considering going to the principal about my AP Computer Science teacher. As I’m sure you all know, I’ve had problems with her not grading my assignments in a timely manner and being lazy about answering questions. I dealt with it because I didn’t want to start drama, but now she’s on my very last nerve. This is an online course, and every lesson links to a practice activity on eIMACS. I was never able to complete any of these because my teacher never provided the login information, but it wasn’t a big deal because I was able to figure out my assignments nonetheless. But recently, an assignment came up that required me to log into the resource and download the instructions, but not knowing the username and password, I literally couldn’t do the assignment. My teacher still won’t drop it even after I explained the problem to her. How do I complete an assignment without any idea of what the assignment even is? This is worth 2% of my grade and I don’t feel like I deserve to be held accountable for a 0 on the assignment. I’m going to contact support to see if I can get the login information, but if I can’t, should I go to the principal?
