High School Class of 2018

@frazzledazzle I wish my parents would give me a cap lolll…they have a cap for safety and match schools, but not for reach schools? Like if I was like “I’m applying to Harvard” they’d be like “yay!”…but if I said “I want to apply to TCNJ” or “I want to apply to Temple for a safety”, they would probably say no… but I keep crossing off matches and safeties anyways so currently I have 12 schools…still debating WUSTL, may not apply to Stony Brook if I get into my match schools…so 10-12.

I used to have 15, but deleted a bunch like UMiami (they changed their HPME program, I realized I would hate it here for undergrad bc of the parties…I’m basically a 70 year old grandma jk but I’m more about fun clubs and service, not frats and tailgating), RPI (horrible location for me), Tufts (didn’t like the campus when I visited), Lehigh (seemed very Greek, pretty iffy spot)…

Whoa, what instrument for conservatory? So like Eastman/Rochester, Juliard/Columbia? I have a couple of friends applying to dual degrees too  It’s a lot of work and auditions!

I’m enacting a cap for myself purely because my workload and 20 college apps in tandem are going to massacre my brains. I’ll probably cap it at 8.

@LushLillies She doesn’t want me applying to any of the top-tier schools like Caltech, MIT, Harvard, Yale, etc. because she doesn’t think I’ll get in (I even doubt I’ll get in but I’m still trying). My reach list has ballooned to 7 schools (Tufts, Caltech, MIT, UChicago, Columbia, Yale, Harvard), so I’m adding USC (mom’s not letting me apply there because she hates their fight song. lol.) and doing an elimination bracket a la March Madness.
It’s flute performance. I love playing the flute. It would be the NEC/Harvard/Tufts program. The conservatory is amazing (literally a block away from Symphony Hall) and the halls and campus are beautiful.

If I get into the Hamilton Scholars program, I will apply to several more than I will apply to than if I don’t, because they provide $500 for app fees. SUNYs, if you apply to many, end up stacking up to be very expensive. They are $50 each, and I’m applying to 4, so I have $200 just in SUNYs, which is annoying, and takes up most of my projected app fees right now (as many are free that I want to apply to).

I’m not sure yet how many schools I will be applying to. I’m working a lot over the summer so I could pay for any application fees if my parents do give me a cap. I’m probably going to apply to a lot of financial safeties in case I do not get enough aid to afford my reach or match schools.

@frazzledazzle Whats your favorite crash course topic? Mine is Astronomy!

@frazzledazzle omg the March Madness idea! I like it! I personally think you’ll regret it more if you DON’T apply than if you get rejected…at least you tried! Not saying you won’t get in, but just for tippy-top reaches, it’s such a crapshoot!

@carmen00 same! I’m planning to get a job after apps are in to compensate. And just for college misc stuff in general. Plus, it would be cool to change things up a bit since I’ve never held a service job.

I had a friend who applied to 33 schools…she said she spend like $2000? her list was ridiculous though, like 60% were major safeties for her (she applied to like every school in the state lol, even the community college even though she’s pretty high stat)…so I definitely don’t want to spend that much!

@solarsystem I love the astronomy topic (Phil Plait is an amazing human being), but I love the world history series as well.

@LushLillies It seems as though everything is a crapshoot these days. With the brackets I pitted Tufts and Caltech against each other (Caltech won), MIT and Chicago (MIT won but it was very close), Columbia and Yale (Yale won), and Harvard against USC (Harvard won). MIT then won against Caltech (rival schools, lol), and I’m having difficulty pitting Yale and Harvard against each other (rivals again, lol).
The March Madness bracket was actually a good idea because I have decided on 5 schools (UChicago, Caltech, MIT, Harvard, Yale), but I’m willing to go down to 4.

@frazzledazzle My ap world teacher made us watch a bunch of the history ones for assignments

@LushLillies Although the admissions process is “holistic,” it is still very subjective to the point that the mood of the admissions committee that day could determine a student’s acceptance.

@solarsystem I wish we watched CrashCourse at my school. That’d be so much fun!

@frazzledazzle Both of my World History teachers (9th and 10th grade) taught using CrashCourse on a semi-regular basis, but my APUSH teacher uses Chapter review videos from Adam Norris to help us along.

I’m placing a cap on my list at about 8 but it might end up being 10. It sucks that a good chunk of the schools I’m debating on applying to are out of state because actually visiting the campus would be the deciding factor, but I think I’ll just utilize youvisit lol. But I have 6 schools that I’m for sure going to apply to and 4 that are kinda up in the air. My mom really wants me to apply to Harvard even tho I KNOW that it’s completely out of my league and my goal was not to pressure myself with trying to get into the ivy league but we’ll see how that goes.

Just finished reading half of the American Pageant! What I learned from this book is that the chapters that are mostly pictures instead of words are the better ones  Hoping to finish reading the other half by April, so I have one month of review for the SAT (or maybe even do the SAT earlier than June if I feel comfortable).

Just wondering, can finishing early on the SAT US History test happen? I can’t imagine being strapped on time if most of the test is on simple recall instead of actual thinking, compared to their other tests like SAT Math 2.

@acomfysofa You have some solid dedication. I can not imagine reading that much that quickly. I’ve barely made it to chapter 35 and I’ve had all year.

@solarsystem I’ve watched U.S., World Psychology and a tiny bit of biology. I love psychology Hank keeps it easy to understand and it is super calm and refreshing to listen to.

@ivakk You could end up applying to Harvard as your mom wants as a “what the heck” sort of thing. If you don’t get in it’s not the end of the world (you’d be able to say that you applied to Harvard AND you’d be able to frame your rejection letter if you wanted to).

@singingwriting I’ve watched a lot of Astronomy, World History, Chemistry, Psychology, and a little of Physics. I’m really happy they all exist in general. Hank and John might just be geniuses for coming up with the idea.

An interesting topic is the philosophy one, taught by hank.

@acomfysofa I enjoy reading the American Pageant leisurely, but I find it irritating when it’s assigned as a homework, and I’m pressed for time.
