High School Class of 2018

@acomfysofa My school doesn’t have spring break. But I do have off today (and probably tomorrow) because of a snow storm.

I have today off due to the NE snow/wind/apocalypse storm happening. Our spring break is in April (they time it in time for Easter)

@acomfysofa I also have break this week!

@frazzledazzle r/ApplyingtoCollege: Seniors Gone Wild! :))

@Hamlon Yeah. I mean it’s a pre-college for a reason. Meaning, it’s not really college. I know this will be one of my first college experiences, but I want this to be a fun one! I also want to create some friendships! If I learned anything from my 4 years of high, it’s that most friendship are forged through common interests, hatred, and coping with anxiety (group-chatting about AP Chem). :)) I’m actually really excited, we’re going to be seeing a lot of things around Pittsburgh and meeting new people.

@Lisa M I literally woke up at 4am, watched some TV, went back to sleep at 7am, and woke up at 2pm. I still have to write my paper, lol.
SAMS is now my first choice. I will be attending the NOVEC Youth Tour, Boys State, maybe NASA Langley, and definitely sams. I believe you’d still likely have to take the SAT prep course, even if you already took it/prefer the ACT.

I got the fee waiver, I’m definitely going to SAMS now.

@Tobster18 @Soccer1235
I just got into NIDDIK’s STEP-UP!

OMG congrats everyone on their summer programs!!! (@ak2018, @aspiringgirl, @Hamlon and other people who may have forgotten about at the top of my head sorry!!)

So much talent in this group !!!

Sorry that this isn’t related, but I have a random college question and everyone seems to know a lot about colleges in general…so I’ve basically made up my college list already, but there’s a few things I want to have cleared up :slight_smile:

First off…Vanderbilt vs WUSTL vs Emory.

I don’t know if anyone knows anything about these places. All of these schools are outside of my comfort zone in terms of location (never been to St. Louis or the South besides North Carolina) so I don’t know. Has anyone not from the South visited Southern schools? Or these ones in particular? I’m interested in only applying to 1 of the 3…I’m interested in studying computational bio or biochem, pre-med…I read some other threads and it seems that Vandy is more Greek, better location than WUSTL…? Still confused though. And I can’t visit any of them due to distance and I don’t want to pay for plane tickets to visit colleges unless I’m admitted lol

And secondly…how many safeties ? And do you think Northeastern could be considered a safety for anyone? My counselor told me it was, but I think it’s p competitive … but I don’t want to waste $ on application fees and would rather attend Northeastern (if admitted) than 2 other tentative safeties on my list (Drexel and Stony Brook). Any thoughts? My counselor usually never inflates anything and is realistic. A lot of students from my school apply there.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’ll try to help out more on the thread :slight_smile:

@LushLillies I don’t really know much about Vanderbilt, WUSTL, or Emory (sorry), but I do know about Northeastern (my sis goes there). I would not consider NU a safety for many reasons:

  1. Its acceptance rate is below 30%
  2. They tend to reject (or put on waitlist) many qualified applicants
  3. I think they admit by major, so that is also a factor that different programs are more competitive than others,

@Tobster18 @aspiringgirl ME TOO!
Only thing is I want more than a week to respond

Congrats! @Soccer1235 You finally got an acceptance! :smiley:

PSA: Crash Course now has courses in Computer Science, Mythology, and Sociology!

@aspiringgirl @soccer1235 Well, mine just says reviewed. I hope that doesn’t mean anything bad.

@Tobster18 What it means is that if people in the first wave decline, then another batch will be accepted, and so on until all the spots are filled. Hopefully you get in a later round!

@aspiringgirl @soccer12 I just realized one of my recommenders never turned their letter. Now I am pissed.

Really? Oooh that sucks although I doubt they would have cared that much cause they would have marked your application as incomplete not as reviewed

@soccer1235 Yeah, probably. Hopefully, I get in the second round.

@acomfysofa My school (basically my state…) doesn’t have break until the third week of April.

@ak2018 I freaking love CrashCourse!

It’s snowing sideways right now… Gotta love Maine!

Anyone else suddenly liking a ton of schools, making the narrowing-down process more difficult? I keep finding more reach-type schools and thinking “maybe I should apply to [insert school] or [school]…”

@frazzledazzle omg that’s my dilemma! All of these Southern, urban schools now ahhh !! I liked it better when I was only looking at East coast lol, less options :stuck_out_tongue: But I don’t want to pay for like 50 apps… and I don’t want to write 100 essays! Plus I already have too many reach schools (4 high reaches, 3 low reach/high match)…

and @apple1893 thank you for the input :slight_smile: I totally agree, I just was surprised my counselor said it! Although Northeastern really likes my school; a lot of people get accepted each year. I guess I’ll assume it’s more of a match and still apply to one more safety…it’s hard finding really good safeties!

Right so today was about 90 degrees! Gotta love that Californian sun!

@LushLillies My mom’s only letting me apply to 8, but I’m thinking of applying to 10 because 2 (maybe 3) of my schools are free to apply to. I’m sticking with my 2 safeties and 3 match schools because those are great, but there are so many reach-type schools that I know I’ll have potential in for my prospective program(s). Since I want to do a dual degree program that a conservatory school does, I’m thinking of applying to both of their partner schools instead of just one. It’s so hard trying to decide!
