High School Class of 2018

Just a follow up, I called Carnegie Mellon, and they told me that I was accepted into the program last week? I never received an email?? But they said that I would receive a folder/packet in the mail sometime next week.

@awkwardanxiety Welcome! What college did you look at?

I only have one week left before break, but I doubt I am going to make survive it:
Monday - AP Lang Essay Rough Draft
Tuesday - Chem Quiz
Wednesday - SAT
Thursday - ???
Friday - Chem Quarter 3 Test, APUSH Research Paper (it has to be at least 12 pages long I’m not going to make it AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH), End of Quarter 3

The SAT is on Wednesday because all CT public schools are having their juniors take it that day as a requirement to graduate.

@ak2018 @nyuhopeful44 true true i’m very anxious for next year…i’ve been reading some results threads but those both contribute to my anxiety and calm it all at once. It’s a confusing experience.

i pretty much have the bulk of my app “completed” -> as in my EC’s and awards are basically decided, not going to join anything new or win many new awards, my test scores have been set for nearly a year (besides subject tests bleh), my grades will just be whatever trashy state they will be (hopefully no surprise B’s on the transcript like last year lol)…just need essays, actually filling out the app, and the waiting game!!

i hope everyone gets in their early place (if they want to) so we can relax and enjoy senior year because junior year is just ugh

Fairfield University!! And ahh, fellow CT person!

I’m so terrified for the SAT Wednesday! I feel so unprepared, no matter how much I study :frowning:

@awkwardanxiety a girl in my grade has already verbally committed to Fairfield for softball! I’m from PA, though, so none of us have heard of it before. She’s visited the campus a few times and she’s excited to go. Also, welcome!

@LeopardFire We’re doing the same thing in ME on Wednesday. We’re also taking the state-wide science standardized test on Thursday.

@awkwardanxiety I toured Fairfield University a few weeks ago! I loved the campus, and the tour guides were great.

As far as studying for the SAT, I’m trying to reach level 4 for all of the reading/writing sections from Khan Academy’s SAT prep, and at least level 3 for all the math sections. I really should have started studying sooner, but its better than nothing… ^^’

@frazzledazzle Maybe all of the New England states are taking it? It seems like New Hampshire is doing the same thing.

Soo… Boston!
The first day I saw Northeastern, it was pretty cool, its like RIGHT in the middle of downtown and its a pretty compact campus. There’s underground tunnels connecting all the buildings which was super cool. Some highlights: I went to the engineering info session and the way they do it is they build in two or three semesters into your curriculum where you’re not at college but working at a job. So that’s awesome, and they do that with all majors, not just engineering. Also, the way you choose your dorms is by choosing a “Living Learning Community” that shares an interest with you (academic, hobby, whatever they have a bunch of different ones) and then they put you in a dorm based on that. There’s also tons of study abroad opportunities and you can start research as a freshman because there’s a lot going on. I’ll probably apply, I liked it.

The second day was busy; we officially visited two and stopped by two other colleges. First was MIT. It was spring break so I probably didn’t get the entire campus vibe but the students there seemed a little grouchy (maybe because they were there on spring break lol). What I got from the presentation is that the classes are really hard and they do a lot of research. A lot of the buildings on campus were very stately and grey and I didn’t like it that much, but there were a couple newer buildings that looked really cool. We walked into the robotics lab (they just let us walk in) and it was super cool and big… I liked how there were a lot of windows in the lab spaces I saw. Its also very close (just across the bridge from) downtown Boston. Overall though, probably not going to apply, it just didn’t stand out enough to me to be worth it.
After that we walked down to Harvard because we had time to kill and why not. Someone tried to sell us crack in the neighborhood around Harvard so there’s that. The campus itself was made up of big, old, fancy brick buildings and mostly inside a fancy old fenced off area. Very posh; I wasn’t a huge fan. Also, there were no benches around campus like what??
Then we went to Needham, which is like a nice residential suburb to Olin. Getting to and from campus was a little tricky because the train/subway stops really far away and there’s no buses. We ubered it. So this college is really weird but super cool. Its TINY, each class is about 80 students, and the total school is like 330. The entire campus is like 4 buildings in a circle. They’re an engineering school and are really into project based learning so EVERY SINGLE CLASS has projects. Its kind of a different engineering curriculum (my dad compared it to Montessori if any of you know what that is) but its cool. The environment is really supportive and the students kinda take charge of what they want to do in and with the school. Its kindof like a college utopia. They also can take classes at two nearby colleges, Babson and Wellesley. Also, the buildings are really new cause the school only started like 20 years ago. Honestly, I liked it; I’m going to apply.
Finally, we walked around Babson because it was right next to Olin. I honestly have no idea about the college at all, I’d never even heard of it until that afternoon but it was cool. Lots of brick buildings.

Today, we took the train out to Worcester (which is not pronounced WOR-CHESTER like I thought but apparently like WOOSTER so ??) and visited Worcester Polytechnic Institute. I liked it. Fairly small easily walkable campus, nice neighborhood, and fairly nice buildings. They have a lot of engineering going on, and every student does 3-4 big projects when they’re there including one that about half do overseas. They also have a lot of fun student designed tech that makes life easier on campus, like a twitterbot that you can tweet at that then automatically changes the music in the dining hall. I liked it.

Anyway that’s what I remember, kinda braindead and tired right now. If you have any other questions about these places, ask me!

I didn’t get into the Hamilton Scholars program X_X But that’s okay because now I can fully commit to the idea of an online class this year at the local community college (but online tho, because I’m lazy). Also, that just forces me to narrow down my college possibilities to a shorter list than if I had $500 for applications. I got further then I thought I would so I can’t complain haha

@julia35002 I live in WNY and this next weekend will be my first ever time in NYC! Do you ever get people assuming that you live in NYC when you say you’re from NY? That happens to me a lot :))

@snowfairy137 When I visited Harvard last summer there were colorful chairs all around Harvard Yard for people to sit in. Maybe they aren’t out right now because of the snow? Sounds like you had a great trip!

Our state had the mandated ACT at the end of last month and I got my score back this week… 29!!! I’m so proud of myself and super surprised. I thought I was going to get a 25 at most and I got a 1200 on the past two SAT’s I took. I take the ACT again next Saturday and will drill the aspects that I didn’t do as well in. I was a little nervous about the Science and Reading parts and I practiced all the week before and did really well. I was more relaxed about the English and didn’t practice as much and that was my worst section. My hope is to get a 31-33 score so hopefully I can reach it this time. At this point I’m just so tried of taking these standardized tests because there’s so much pressure around them.

Good luck to everyone who’s take the SAT and ACT this upcoming month!!!

I registered for the May SAT yesterday, and it’s going to be my first shot (all the other test dates didn’t work with my schedule this year). I’m super nervous!

Here are crash course schedules that I am planning to do for the June SAT and if I need it for the ACT. It’s very extensive so if you already have a large amount of school work or do extra circulars that take up a lot of time, I don’t recommend doing these:

You just have to be very motivated to do 10 consecutive days before the test with multiple hours a day of practice.

So I have a really big announcement: I’m starting my own club. Project V-NASA is officially underway! The club will be about making students more aware of the NASA Langley student programs and classes as well as creating a large community of students who will take the classes and will receive large networking opportunities from NASA. The three classes will range in topics of aerospace and Earth System Science and will be available to 10th - 12th graders next year. I’m planning on having an interest meeting either April 27th or May 2nd. I already have a sponsor and am currently in the works of thinking of how I plan to advertise the club. I’m thinking of sending a prepared PowerPoint of the classes to the science teachers and have them present it to their students or just place posters everywhere including the science rooms. But yeah, I hope to get everything up and running very soon.

I also went on a field trip to Lockheed Martin yesterday. It was really fun, like last year. Apparently, they’re thinking about creating a program to recruit high school students to intern at Lockheed Martin over the summers while in college and they would pay for all 4 years! It’s definitely awesome. I feel like I’ve found my dream job! I also got people interested in the club I’m creating.

@snowfairy137 Thanks for your MIT perspective. I’m honestly still on the fence about applying to MIT. I hate how every time I learn about it, I fall in love with the school even more. I’ve decided that if my SAT score isn’t in the 1400’s by September, I probably won’t apply. I remember a few months ago when I believed that Virginia Tech was out of my reach. Now, after participating in a NASA-based college class and planning on going to SAMS, I feel like I’m pretty much going to get in and now I’m looking higher than I should be. After looking more into VT, I think it couldn’t be more perfect to me. So, at this point, I’m planning on applying to VT Early Decision, just to get into college early-on my senior year, and MIT Early Action, just as a crapshoot and say that I applied.

@ak2018 interesting predicament to be in! Good luck on whichever schools you’re applying to and i’m sure you’re gonna kill it wherever you go

@ak2018 but the early decision for VT would be binding, assuming you got in you wouldn’t really be able to go anywhere else

Hi guys! I’m a junior and I want to go to MIT.

I have the sat on the 13th I think and I’m not excited.

@overachieving welcome to the thread!! and @ak2018, thanks for sharing your update!

A lot of my senior friends and the seniors at my school have gotten into AMAZING places…I hope this happens to my friends and I next year !!!

I don’t know if any of your schools have weird patterns, but the Class of 2016 at my school didn’t pull out many super high acceptances (only 2 Ivies + a psuedo-Ivy + some nice places like UCB and JHU)…the Class of 2015 was basically all Ivy or psuedo-Ivys (Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech, UChicago). And now the Class of 2017 is looking really good, so I’m worried our Class of 2018 is going to be kinda disappointing :frowning:
