High School Class of 2018

@overachieving Yeah. Converted to US dollar, UoT with residence for me would be $15,000. Thing is, Dalhousie (local university) is $5,000.

Out-of-province universities also rarely give out scholarships (athletic, let alone academic, volunteering, etc), so I’m out of luck there.

@acomfysofa Also, you gotta consider that few US universities guarantee financial aid to students from outside the US. I’m pretty sure that during my visit, Harvard and Princeton said they guaranteed financial aid to all students including international applicants, but I’m not sure about Yale.

@acomfysofa same situation here: $$$. Probably not going to attend YYGS because of it :’(. But University of Alabama gives a lot of cash to international students, I hear.

And considering striking MIT off my list, because, well.

@Marg532 Yes!! All the time I live in like the middle of nowhere too. So when I have to describe where I live usually the reference point is 3 hours from NYC.

@carmen00 ugh, my school is the same and if anything worse. I am pretty sure the last person to go to any ivy league was in the 90’s .

Uh, guys. I got a car, a boyfriend, and a job all in one week. What is happening.

@neptuna can’t relate LMAO

@neptuna a teenage life, actually sounds like something that happens in the movie.

@neptuna Congrats! Sadly I can’t relate (although I have a car. No boyfriend or job).

Is anyone else who’s taking the SAT this week planning on taking a practice test beforehand? I feel like doing so on Tuesday to set my mind at ease. I’m getting anxious (because of the SAT but also because YSPA decisions are probably coming out tomorrow or this week).

@frazzledazzle I am taking an ACT Saturday and plan on taking a practice test just to get myself familiar with it.

I know that really drilling the reading and science sections the week before really brought up my scores. My first time I took it I got a 25 on the science, then after a week of multiple practices I ended up getting a 31 on the actual test. I got a 24 on my first reading but ended up getting a 29 on the actual test. This time my goal is to really focus on English and really practice that before Saturday because it was my lowest section on the actual test.

@madison2000 thank you!! those are the main things I really need to work on as well. I am thinking that if this test goes good and better than how I did on the SAT I am going to take it again in June.

Each person does better on one test and/or feels more comfortable. For me, it’s definitely the ACT but since I already signed up for the June SAT I’m just going to go in and try my best but I’m 99% sure I won’t send it to schools.

@neptuna Don’t use up all of your luck before admissions season! :stuck_out_tongue:

@frazzledazzle I’m definitely going to go on Khan Academy, but I’m afraid if I get a bad score on a practice test, I’ll just end up demoralizing myself and do worse on the real SAT. orz

My senior friends have been getting into such amazing schools and it makes me so happy, considering that we’re a tiny private school with less than 80 kids per grade. A bunch of people have gotten into ivies, pseudo-ivies, or super selective BSMD programs and I feel like a proud dad watching them all get into their top choices as I wither away in high school for another year. Also, I suggest to everyone to make friends with the seniors or stay close with them because they’re great resources for advice too. It’s amazing to know that these same kids who I’ve known since middle school are going to such great places ahhhhhhh gives me a lot of hope for myself

I think a lot of people on this thread should stop focusing solely on ivies and top 10 schools though. Like it’s very unlikely that you’re getting into an ivy with a 3.5 gpa, so it might be best to apply to more mid-tier schools like URochester, Boston college, or Tulane. Also, make sure to ask your counselors what colleges your school sends a lot of people to. An anecdotal example is WashU for my school. It has a 15% acceptance rate but at my school our acceptance rate hovers at around 60-70%. Just remember that there’s always such thing as an out of reach school, so it wouldn’t be worth it to apply to so many of those

It sucks because only one person at my school got into an ivy and that was for sports( public school over 700 per grade). I came to school after ivy day and some of my friends were crying. I partially agree with @oPhilippos. We should definitely have safety/match schools that we are happy with. However, I say its up to the individual to judge their eligibility for an ivy. GPA is a lot, but not everything. Also, definitely befriend some seniors. I got so much advice I am so thankful.

On another note, do you ever have so much to do that you procrastinate because you don’t know what to do? That is me right now.

I have so much to do by the end of the marking period… And it’s in two days (pushed back by a bunch of snow days and the NE wind storm). I have to watch a movie and write a review on its historical accurateness for APUSH, finish writing half of an essay for AP Lit, and somehow do it around my crazy busy schedule (guard championships all day today, honors chorus event at a neighboring school tomorrow right after school, and barely any time to work on it during the day tomorrow)

When I write it down it doesn’t seem like much but I’m actually dying right now because APUSH is overloading my brain. We are currently having weekly review sections due on Thursdays and chapter packets due on Sunday nights. We only get 1 full week of exclusive review, including working through spring break. Ugh!!!

@oPhilippos I’m not even considering Ivys, or even any psudeo-Ivys. I’m mostly considering decent private colleges who, while not academically poor, are definitely not Ivys.

@LeopardFire I’m thinking of taking a full-length practice test on Khan Academy Tuesday after school just to see how well I’ll probably do on Wednesday and to familiarize myself with the SAT.
