You guys are so lucky to have all these AP’s in your school.
Initially I was going to have 4 APs (Bio, Lit, Gov, and Physics Mech), but I’ve decided to drop Mech…my counselor said I would still be on the most rigorous path though. Idk. What do you guys think?
This is my projected schedule, planning on majoring in something CS and Bio related, no AP CS available
-AP Lit
-AP US Gov
-AP Bio
-Calc 4 (took BC and Multivariable)/Intro to Data Science
-Biochem/Forensic Medicine
-Bioinformatics (or AP Stat if Bioinformatics doesn’t have enough enrollment)
I already took AP Spanish Language, so my counselor said I don’t need to take AP Spanish Lit. There are no other AP sciences besides Physics Mechanics, but I don’t want to die…especially since I took physics as a sophomore and forgot everything lol
The only other AP available is AP Art History and APUSH…but those are not related to my future major at all. I’m worried taking 2 non AP sciences looks like I’m not trying? I never took APES or AP Psych as classes, but I self studied them and colleges will see that I got scores before and might be skeptical…
What do you guys think? Thank you
so my friend just sent me an article about a guy from north dakota who got accepted into 8 ivy league schools because he was a Key Club officer (my friend and I are both key club officers so hi jeff if you see this) and I was like “wait, i remember reading this guy’s thread on college confidential”
i also found him on facebook and found out we have a mutual friend. He’s from north dakota, i’m from nevada. I have 250 facebook friends.
it really puts things into perspective like
there’s only one degree of separation between me and that guy from north dakota, and that degree of separation came from 1 person out of 250 that I am decently acquainted with. The world is so small. Like, how many degrees of separation are between me and the next president, or the person who finally cures cancer, or who starts the next major international war?
Next year I’m taking AP French, AP Lit, and AP Calc AB. My mom is absolutely refusing to let me take AP Physics. She says I either take astronomy (a regular level class) or not have a science next year.
@frazzledazzle Why? This is one of those times where I’d go behind my parents’ backs. You need to (ideally) have 4 years of a lab-based science if you want to be a STEM major. What’s her reasoning?
@frazzledazzle Agree with @Hamlon here. This is your future, and although your parents are there to guide you, you’re the one in the driving seat.
My parents didn’t want me to take Honors English next year (the only other Honors course at my school, the other one is Pre-Calculus) because the rigor of courses doesn’t matter here in Canada, but I wanted to have a better learning experience during my time in High School so I signed up for the course anyway.
@frazzledazzle If you really want to take AP Physics, I’d try having either your guidance counselor or, if you know them, an AP Physics teacher email your mom. Maybe they could rationalize it with her if she won’t listen to you.
@Hamlon @acomfysofa @LeopardFire My guidance counselor sides with my mom. He argues that it’s the hardest class in the school and that I wouldn’t do well in it. My mom doesn’t listen to me, so she’s siding with him. By the way, my guidance counselor majored in history in college, so he would probably think science classes are a little harder. My mom thinks that, since I can’t get my work done on time due to mental reasons at the moment, that I’ll have trouble getting all of my homework done in my 3 or 4 AP classes next year. She also thinks it would look better to have astronomy on my schedule than have AP Physics. A few weeks ago she talked to the astronomy teacher and he said the class would be easy for me and, despite knowing I like to challenge myself, she still won’t let me take a harder science class. I can’t go behind my mom’s back on this. My guidance counselor doesn’t want to get between my mom and I on this, so he’s saying he needs my mom’s permission to let me change my course schedule for next year. What stinks even more is that I won’t be able to be in Honors Band because of my schedule having astronomy instead of AP Physics. I would only be in regular band, which doesn’t get the 5.0 weight.
It’s just insane what’s going on. I feel trapped in my schedule. I hate it.
@madison2000 Is there a particular reason you need 4 APs? Euro is quite hard and even with easy gov it won’t balance well.
I actually decided today to take AP human geography because I did practice tests online for the exam and it’s pretty easy. I have a couple of reasons for taking so many AP’s: to give me a “competitive” edge and makeup for my lack of honors freshman year, boost my GPA because I want to graduate summan cum laude, I might want to graduate early from college, plus half of my AP’s are not that hard to me.
@frazzledazzle Is there any way you could drop the class after a few weeks if AP Physics is really too hard for you? Maybe you could convince your mom to let you try it out for a certain amount of time and then decide.
I was actually in the exact same position a month. My POE teacher, who is also a Physics teacher, meet with my counselor, behind my back, to discuss not letting me take AP Physics C next year because I hadn’t done any prior Physics class yet. My counselor wanted to schedule a meeting with my parents, but after convincing them that I was perfectly capable of trying AP Physics C and seeing how it works out, at the very least, they cancelled it. After talking with the actual AP Physics C teacher, I found out some interesting information. Apparently, my POE teacher doesn’t recommend taking AP Physics C to really anyway. The Physics C teacher said that if my POE teacher had it his way, pretty much no one would be taking AP Physics C. She also said that this is the reason why he’s just a Physics teacher and she’s an actual engineer. He also went to Ithaca College, something I found out today. But yeah, anyway, she said that, if needed, she would go down to my counselor and say that I’m okay for AP Physics C. You wanna know why? She said that after meeting me, she sensed my ambition and desire to be challenged. After talking with her, she said that based on my accomplishments, I’m set to be a real “mover and shaker” in the STEM world.
My point is, you’re likely going to have to show both your mom and your counselor that you are motivated and determined to take AP Physics. I was do determined to take AP Physics C next year, partially due to people telling me I couldn’t do it, I was prepared to get a head start on Calculus and Physics this summer by self-studying. Now that I got into SAMS, that’s not really that much of an issue since I’ll be taught by actual college professors. But yeah, I would say that a possible solution to your dilemena would be to show your mom how motivated and determined you are to take the class. If she’s one of those people that’s need to see it to belive, try working something out with your counselor and see if you’d be able to get into AP Physics C after proving to your mom that you can handle it, maybe by STUDYING throughout the summer.
I can understand why your mom wouldn’t let you take the class, but look at it this way. It would be better, financially, to take the class and fail now, than to take the class for the first time in college, fail, and be out $1,000+. By you taking the class, your would prepare yourself for what’s to come. Also, I agree with the above statements. This is your life, not your mother’s. Out there in the “real world” (oh how I hate this term), your mom will not likely be able to intervene in something like this. You’re going to be expected to rise to the challenge, or at least give it your best effort.
Just my two cents! Hope it works out!
Also, I’d like to share an update.
So today was the worst week I had experienced since January. I felt very disorganized and it felt I was burning out really fast. Throughout this week, I didn’t feel like studying. I wanted to, but I kept procrastinating. This, unfortunately, led to completing bombing my end of chapter AP Chem test, which will likely result in me getting a failing grade this quarter, potentially impacting my final grade. This was also a fairly hectic week in my family for multiple reasons. I just felt so done with it. Now that’s it’s Spring Break, I can finally unwind. Historically, this has always been the time I tend to fizzle out. I remember this time last year, I literally sat in my Chemistry class for an hour trying to even think of how to begin my Moles test. The week before Spring Break tends to be the most hectic. After speaking with my counselor, I plan to use my Spring Break as an actual break from school, for the most part. I still need to write my research paper for my online class and study for my AP Chemistry cumulative test, but that’s about it. I’m going to try and get some sleep now, but I have officially claimed tomorrow to be a work-free day.
To add to my last post, tomorrow I plan to map out a way to end the year out strong.
@ak2018 Thank you for your added wisdom!
I’ll try bringing up the subject again in a few weeks to see how things go and mention how I could drop it before the add/drop period ends during next year’s school year. I might even email the AP Physics teacher (she taught my physics class freshman year) to ask her if she think’s I should take the class. Both my mom and my guidance counselor know how determined and ambitious I am, so we’ll see how things go.
Just out of curiosity, what is everyone’s Myers-Briggs personality types? I’m an INTJ, the rarest of them all!
Lol. I’m an INTJ too. Your post reminds me of how I’m always annoying my counselor through my school life by either a) planning out everything and therefore doing their job or b) pestering them to let me take more advanced classes.
I don’t know wether I’m happy or not. My history group is going to the state competition for NHD officially. On the one hand I’ll be missing work and won’t get much homework done, but it’s the first state competition I will ever have attended. It should be interesting although it’ll require a lot more work.
I’m an INTJ too! I don’t feel it’s very fitting though.
My guidance counselor really let me choose my classes. She never opposed to any of them because she knew I could handle them. I didn’t have to use her too much because I do everything myself. I know myself pretty well and I know my limits, so she never had any issues with anything.
I’m an INTP, and it really does describe me well in my opinion. Also, here’s my schedule that I’ll (hopefully) be taking next year:
AP Bio (block class)
AP Macro/AP US Gov (Half a semester each)
AP Lit
Wind Ensemble
Dual Enrollement:
Calc 1&2
German 1&2
I thought INFJ was the rarest?
I’m an INTJ/ENTJ. I used to be a solid INTJ, but with high school and being in a bunch of clubs and going to things like dances and basketball games, I’ve started to love being around people/leading groups. Personality is fluid and a significant part is due to the environment. I can be an extrovert, but I also love being alone (as evidenced by me on my computer locked up in my room right now).
I relate to this on a spiritual level
