High School Class of 2018

I just came home from the first ACT test. I did everything but the writing because it’s my strength. I thought all the sections were pretty easy except for the math. I practiced some of it, but it has been since 8th grade since I’ve had geometry. So I’m definitely going to need to focus more on that weakness.

I also took the ACT and the math section near the end was pretty brutal. I’m probably gonna have to retake it cause that section was a lot harder than all practice tests I’ve taken.

Good luck on the ACT/SATs everyone from a senior that’s taken 4 ACTs.

@ak2018 I’m not really sure why it’s coming back now? I started reading the book in junior high and it was so depressing I couldn’t get through it. Going through the tapes creeped me out so bad.

The ACT was meh at best

I have the ACT on the 19th. Not. Ready. At. All.

So much testing! I hope you all get the scores you want, and good luck to those who are taking it later on.
I don’t have any tests this month. I have the SAT in May and the ACT in June. I don’t have too much time to study for the SAT though because I’m so busy this month! Hopefully I don’t need to take any tests senior year.

@Hamlon I also have the school ACT on the 19th. rip.

To anyone who took the SAT US History recently, does the curve feel harsher than -10 = 800? That’s the curve in the practice test, but I heard that the curve on the actual tests became harsher.

@snowfairy137 Congrats on the conditional acceptance for the summer academy! We haven’t received anything about the summer academy yet for my program, but they said they’ll be making selections in May. However, despite all my late assignments that I turned in towards the end, I still have yet to receive less than a B+ on anything major. I also called the program coordinator three weeks ago and she hinted that I was highly likely going to the academy. She really wants me to be there too. She also said that I was ranked #2/31 in my class, second to my friend at my school who is also taking the class.

@Hamlon It’s because

A) Selena Gomez and her team worked something out with Netflix to make the show (Bless their souls! ^:)^ ) and

B) This year marks 10 years since the book’s release!

It’s honestly a very good book and despite how dark it was, I’d easily read it again! I read it three years ago, at a time where I was in a similar mindset as Hannah, so it really brought some things into perspective! Three years later, now that I know more about how suicide affects people, I find the book even more precious. To me, Clay, the main character represents this vigilante or angelic-like character who wants to put Hannah’s soul to rest. Unlike all the others before Clay, who hoped no one would ever find out, he seemed to be the one who believed rather than moving on and pretending as if Hannah was making mountains out of mole hills, he saw an actual problem with his school and the students themselves. And he is making sure nothing like that happens again. Because it’s all about looking for the signs.

I’m sorry for my rant, but despite the fact that the book is widely considered to be just another pretentious book with a pretentious heroine, it holds A LOT of value to me.

I read 13 Reasons Why for a 7th grade project. It was alright, I think it was a 3/5 for me…I guess I’m too cold? I’ve also never been a huge fan of “teen realistic fiction”. I actually believed Hannah was making a mountain out of a mole hill based on how the book was written; her assault should have been way more emphasized in the book and it wasn’t. I preferred Laurie Halse Anderson’s “Speak” much more, so I’d recommend that to those who liked 13 Reasons Why, or those who have similar opinions about it as me :slight_smile:

like @ak2018 it was definitely not pretentious too me, just didn’t have the emotional power that “Speak” had. I watched 1 episode of the show…it was alright! I wish it came out sooner. It’s cool that it’s a series and not a movie though. I like it better than the book so far!

how do you people maintain your gains while keeping up your grades?

@ak2018 I literally just finished it! I watched all 13 episodes in one day lol

I’m struggling to build my college list currently…
Only have 4 definite schools I want to apply to:
Williams (absolute first choice)
Dartmouth
Cornell
Penn State (safety)

I love rural schools, preferably smaller with a great sense of community. However, these are most common at LACs which often don’t have a great math department or any statistics department at all.

@thetex Gains over grades everyday

I’ve been afk for this entire weekend because I was at a retreat for a summer camp I go to on a lake (it was still frozen and we had to dip our feet in at 6 this morning. It was ice water.)

My brain was completely like scrambled eggs on Friday after having done testing for 2 days in a row. We were doing a lesson in Calculus that I was looking forward to doing and would be able to understand otherwise, but I was unable to focus and was very confused about everything. I regret taking that practice test on Tuesday, even though it helped me develop a new test-taking style.

I’m going to Boston next weekend! My mom finally booked the hotel and I’m emailing professors in the morning to try to talk with them next weekend. I’m going to visit BU (let me know if you want to know anything about it!), get a lesson from a flute professor at the New England Conservatory (hopefully!), and go to the opening lecture of the Cambridge Science Festival on Astronomy and life elsewhere in the Universe at Harvard. If any of you guys want to know things about the schools I’ll be going to/driving through (BU, NEC, Harvard, and maybe MIT), just let me know!

How important are SAT 2’s for top schools who only consider them if submitted? I just don’t know when I’d be able to fit them it to my schedule for next year and I won’t be able to take them in May or June so I’m considering not taking them at all. Any thoughts?

@ivakk Some schools (MIT/Caltech/Harvey Mudd) explicitly require subject tests regardless of the test (sat/act) you took. Contact potential schools and ask.

@frazzledazzle I’m visiting BU on the 22nd! I’m also visiting Emerson. I’ve never been to Boston so I’m excited to go and check out some schools.
