Is anyone else feeling junior year burn out? I like all of my classes except for my humanities classes! I have them so much because I have not interest in them!
@apple1893 I’ve been burning out for the last 4 month lol :)) But it’s not that bad anymore. I’ve got my life somewhat under control.
@apple1893 I’m the exact opposite.
If I just had AP Lang, APUSH, and Latin, school would actually be pretty great. My STEM classes are my bane right now.
I’m not the only one pretending AP exams don’t exist, right? May is going to be interesting.
It doesn’t get any better after the AP’s test if you live in NY. Straight to review for the regents. fml

Hi all,
I would say I am new here but I have been following CC for over a year now (but only just now got the courage to get an account and post). You all are so accomplished, it is a bit intimidating.
I am from DEEP rural CA (spotty cell phone service at best and HughesNet is what we call high speed internet). My School (7-12) is 440 total and we only have the opportunity for 5 APs starting Junior year (if enough people sign up which is difficult because parents here do not want to pay for the tests).
I am Mexican-American and French (My mom was born and raised there). French was actually my first language as we spoke that at home and I went to French Schools while we lived in the US (they are free to French citizens if you live near one; we didn’t but my parent were willing to drive 55 min each way 4 times a day). I also lived in France for 6 years 2007-2013. So, 8th grade was my first exposure to school in English. My parents did switch up when we were in France though and we spoke only English at home so I was fluent. But that is a bit different than actually writing papers and taking exams in that language.
Thanks to all your advice I have applied to many of the programs you have all brought up (MITES, SAMS, Questbridge, HSF YLI, etc.).
Unfortunately, I was rejected from MITES. I still can’t get over that. It really stung. I have been thinking and working towards that since 8th grade. I am not sure what more I could have done. I have a 4.0 UW (4.43 W) GPA, 1280 PSAT (95th). I am a National Hispanic Recognition Program Invitee and a Curie Academy Scholar. We don’t have many ECs outside of AG programs at my school, but we have one academic team in literature (we have won our regional competition three out of the last four years) and I am a theatre geek with several leading roles since 10th grade. My essays brought tears to most who read them (including teachers) and my recommendations all said I was in the top 1% of students that they have ever had (my Science teacher is a former CSU Adjunct and taught summer courses at our closest CSU).
To make matters worse, before my MITES rejection, I was also devastated by my March SAT results (1350 - 690EW/660M). I studied like crazy for a month and a half. Took all the Khan Academy practice tests scoring from 1390 -1470. I never scored below a 710 on the math. But there I was at 3 am staring at a 1350 (660 in math).
All is not bad though. I did get into SAMS, and I am really happy about that. I really love CMU because of its quirky commitment to both the hard sciences and the fine arts (kind of like me). It really would be a great fit for my personality and I am extremely grateful that I will get a chance to be on campus this summer.
Well I guess that is it for now. I am sorry that this is soooooo long, but I guess I had some pent up frustrations and news to get out.
BTW, I can’t believe that this feeling of rejection is only going to get worse as we apply for college.
Congratulations to all for all your accomplishments so far, and please keep up all the great posts.
@Maschinenmädchen
Dude don’t sweat it. Rejection is something that we all have to live with, and our self-worth is not validated by the schools we get into or the scores we get nor the competitions we win. Remember that this thread is of people all over the place who have access to different educational opportunities, so some of our accomplishments may not even be accurate representations of how hard we work. The way I see it, I don’t think schools should be judged on the basis of one being better than the other. It really depends on how well you fit a school, both academically and culturally. Colleges are meant to educate and help you develop as a person, so if you’re not necessarily on the same level as other people, just know that that doesn’t make them better than you or worse. They’re just developing at a different rate, and that’s totally fine. There’s a culture of superiority in college admissions, and it shouldn’t be there. Colleges give you the starting point from which you could grow, for some it’s further along than others, but it’s really up to you to see how far you go, or how far back you fall because nearly any college will give the resources to do so.
@julia35002 I have 3 regents this year (U.S., Algebra 2, and English) but I honestly can’t wait until the end of AP week, because my anxiety will be waaaay lower after all of those are over. Regents are a piece of cake to me, honestly, especially compared to AP tests in the same subject (last year, I got a 90 on the Global Regents because I took the WHAP test haha)
Thanks for your comment. You are, of course, completely correct, but I still have this huge empty feeling (after three years of daydreaming).
In the end it is all probably for the best, and I will get over it. I will redouble my efforts on the SAT and hope that that is my main weakness. Don’t get me wrong, I am a realist and know it IS my MAIN weakness (not my only weakness), but I have been complacent believing the whole “holistic” approach could save me. It can’t. If I really want to go to a top engineering school I need a MUCH better math score on the SAT. Nothing else will “save” me.
BTW I am a dudette (just in case I haven’t made that clear)
@Marg532 I have 5, chemistry, A2/trig, English, US history, and french. I did pretty well on last years regents with a 96 my one friend got a 99 and the one multiple choice question she got wrong was “which came first?” She chose gunpowder when it was a wooden plow. Idk how I’d feel to get that one question wrong. And my teachers give 100 dollars to anyone that gets a 100 on the regents.
@Maschinenmädchen
I use dude as a gender neutral term (i start conversations with everyone with ‘dude guess what’ or something of the sort) so that never even occurred to me to consider lmao
Guess who saved all their homework for 11:30 pm on the last day of Easter break !!! I just finished an outline for a literary analysis essay and now I have two other short answer questions and trig homework. Not including the lesson I have to read for world history tomorrow in homeroom. I thought I was going to start earlier today, and here I am at 12:50 am with a ton of homework.
At least the outline is done because that was honestly the hardest. I have a solid outline so my actual paper shouldn’t be too bad to write. I’m not too good at interpreting literature, so once I figure out what direction I’m going in, the writing itself is simple.
Back to my homework now before I get too distracted by the internet and I don’t get any sleep.
That’s what I figured, but thought that I would clear it up now. You have no idea how many times I have read posts and thought it was a person of one gender and it turned out to be the opposite. :))
Just got my ACT score, 34!!! Super excited!!! I did suprisingly better on english/reading, with two 35’s, and then a 33 on science, and 31 on math.
I’m supee glad becuase now i won’t have to take any of these stupid tests again
@saxynerd good job!!! I wish I could be done with testing too.
Apparently I might be able to take some IB courses next year! I’ll just have to self-study some things that aren’t covered in my normal courses.
Is 6 out of 7 in an IB course a respectable score for a top university? At my school, a 6 is a 92% - 98% and a 7 is a 99% - 100%, and I’m unfortunately a 98% student
@Maschinenmädchen Congrats on SAMS!! I was also accepted to SAMS and I was waitlisted for MITES so I know how it feels. We have made a SAMS group chat if you want to pm me for info, and its full of some great people
@carmen00 you mentioned tests and my mind instantly reminded me of the 4 subject tests and 1 ACT I’ll be taking in May/June in addition to APs and honestly i’m so done with it all
Also done with testing. Oh, wait except the one required ACT tomorrow -_-
Good luck to everyone taking the State ACT tomorrow!
I was randomly checking out test optional colleges and I saw a new one - “test blind”. Apparently only one university practices this: Hampshire College. The school was actually recommended to my sister by Lesley University when she appealed for more aid (took them barely 30 mins to reply. The email was pretty nice and clearly not automated, so bonus points for them).
I know the SAT/ACT is difficult, costs money to send, and favours the rich, but still… I honestly can’t imagine that a school would just say “no” to it, just like that. It got me really thinking about what else I have to offer. As an international student, a lot of what I just think about is the standardized tests, but now I’m wondering, for a school like that, if I were to apply, what would they see?
I’ve not taken the SAT yet, and maybe I’ll score really high, and maybe abysmally low, but it’s okay, because Hampshire College got my back.
Their financial aid is also pretty awesome, so… my longest post lol.
