High School Class of 2018

@LeopardFire Thanks! I figure it would be around that date, then.

@snowfairy137 Wait, you had to pay for it? Because of a deal that NASA Langley made with Thomas Nelson Community College, we get college credit for FREE. Same with the aerospace class I’m taking next year. Speaking of which, would you mind briefly describing the class? Since I’m taking it next with five other APs, I want to know what I’m getting into.

I also only have about 33 days of school left!. I’m so excited to be done with junior year! Can’t wait to be a senior!

@ ak2018 yeah the class is free but if we want University of Washington credit we have to pay $250. Maybe cause its not a cc? Idk

@snowfairy137 @ak2018 Students at my school pay for college courses at a CC if they are not taught at our school. If they are taught at our school, there’s a $90 fee that is refunded when we pass the class.

For DE at Moravian College, if you get accepted into their scholars program, you get free courses. If not, it’s $400 per course.

For DE at Lehigh, one course per semester is free and the rest are at the rates that it would be for regular Lehigh students.

I think it just depends on the deal your school has with the college.

@carmen00 Yeah this class isn’t through my school, but my state does have a running start program where you can take classes at CCs and some public universities for free.

@LushLillies I was told that the 3 sciences (Physics, Bio, Chem) were a good thing to have for anything STEM related, but those are regular courses (where it’s just one semester for Grade 12) for a Canadian university. And I’m not sure if it’s actually required for Canadian universities. IB Sciences are two semesters long in Grade 12 and are more meaningful for an American university as a Canadian. So I’m not sure if taking all 3 sciences is a must for STEM?

Do American universities care that you take all 3 sciences, or are those two IB HL courses (Physics & Chemistry) enough? Here are my potential courses for next year:

Calculus 12 (Honors)
Pre-Calculus 12 (Honors)
Advanced English 12 (Honors)
Global History 12 (Regular, required)
IB Chemistry HL 12 (“Honors”, as called by the school, but it’s obviously more than that)
IB Physics HL 12 (“Honors”, same here)

Note that it’s without any Biology course. I’m trying to fit in Biology 12 (Regular) if possible, but there might not be room. There’s no Honors Biology, and I definitely don’t have room for IB Biology.

@acomfysofa
For most American unis, they want you to have taken the 3 sciences, but not necessarily at the highest level (AP, IB, Dual Enrollment, etc.)

So I expect that you’ve already taken regular Chem, Physics and Bio? I doubt IB is REQUIRED for any uni, maybe just recommended for competitive Canadian unis?

Also, are pre-calc and calc both 1 semester? I’ve never heard of anyone taking them concurrently lol since usually pre-calc is necessary for calc!

@LushLillies I’m currently taking Biology 11 (Regular) as a junior right now and will complete it, but I won’t be able to take Biology 12 (Regular) if I go with the course selection above unless I take out an IB course or my guidance counselor can somehow make room for it.

I’m applying to top US universities, so I think taking HL sciences will be highly preferred? I currently have a 98.5% out of 100% average (with a 98% in both regular Chemistry 11 and Physics 11), so I think I can achieve a 6 (or 7 if lucky) in those HL courses.

I take Pre-Calculus in the first semester of senior year, and Calculus in the second semester of senior year. They aren’t taken concurrently, but I’ve been dabbling in my own Calculus textbook and I could learn it right now if I wanted to lol (but studying for SATs makes it not possible :frowning: ).

@acomfysofa have you taken reg. chem and physics? and that’s good that they’re not concurrent

I think your schedule is fine! Unless your intended major is bio or something (highly doubt it since out of the 3, you chose to opt out of bio)…but then again course rigor is very relative to your HS, I can’t really comment on the rigor, talk to your GC if you are worried about how rigorous she will mark your schedule as!

@LushLillies Yes, I’ve taken regular Chem 11 with a final of 98% and I’m currently taking Physics 11 with an in-progress of 98% :slight_smile:

Thanks, hopefully taking Biology junior year but not taking Biology senior year in place of IB HL Chem and Physics won’t pose an issue!

@acomfysofa you’re totally fine. Colleges expect one year each of those 3 sciences, not all 3 in one year.

@snowfairy137 The Biology 11 course is actually one semester (5 months), so is that still one year? That’ll be the only Biology course that I will have taken if I go forward with my current Honors-with-IB senior schedule.

@acomfysofa yeah probably. I think you’ll be fine.

@carmen00 That’s actually a pretty great idea to take a class for $90. The only dual-enrollment program we have at our school costs a lot of money. The only thing remotely close is the Early College Scholars where I take a few AP classes for free online.

I wish listening to Hamilton would be considered studying for APUSH

@julia35002 I’d ace the AP exam if that were true

trueeeeeee, I am currently dying /crying as I am trying to write a DBQ on conservatism for APUSH, do a trig test, study for AP psych and other hw.

And would it bother you guys that like all year for my APUSH we only typed our essays even this last one? like it is truly bothering me because I take more time typing than writing and I feel like it is not fully preparing me for the AP.

@julia35002 It helps a lot with events that happened during and immediately after the Revolution. I’ve been considering doing that since Monday. I’m going to start listening to it this weekend and then listen to it on repeat all week.
I’ve been procrastinating doing a LEQ on the Cold War all week that was assigned the week before vacation and was due on Monday. I only have the intro done. I’m going to be in deep trouble with my mom about it soon so I’m getting it done tonight.

My AP Lang class had to be at school an hour early today to do a 2 hour timed writing as a dry run for the essay section of the exam. We had to do all 3 essays from the 2011 exam. It was torture, but I finished with 10 minutes left and I think I did pretty well.

Does anyone have any experience doing research at a college? I’m really interested in Math and ik that research looks really good, but is there even a such thing as math research especially for high school.
