High School Class of 2018

@julia35002 First time hearing it just now. Should’ve listened to Hamilton instead of reading the American Pageant 10/10

Then looked up ticket prices to maybe watch it while on my road trip through the US to Toronto. It’s $424.00 each. no bueno lol

@acomfysofa The soundtrack is great and all, but the show is starting to be too overexposed for my tastes. The album is definitely a 10/10 would listen to again with regards to helping me study for the exam. If there’s a question regarding that time period that would be amazing.

@kassh4 I don’t have experience with doing research (yet, because I’m starting this summer), but I do know how to contact professors.

Write an email, mentioning their research and what aspects of it appeal to you. Maybe even mention how you maybe able to contribute. Make sure it’s professional, and attach your resume to it. Oh yeah, make a resume (ask your guidance counselor/local professional person for help on that). I emailed three professors with that plan, got yeses from two and a response from one (she said no because she didn’t have room, but recommended to email others but by that point I already had a position secured with a lab that did have room).

So I have a question for you guys. Have you talked with your parents lately about how many schools you’re going to apply to and the cost of applying? I just had that talk with mine and it looks like I’m only going to be able to apply to 4-5 different schools, due to application fees, meaning I’m going to have to narrow my list down soon. Unless I do happen to get into Questbridge, which could change a lot of things.

My parents are aware of how much it costs to send in an application but I don’t think they understand that you also have to send in scores on top of that. I plan on applying to six but they are encouraging about 8 or so. The only problem is I have three, maybe four, schools that I would be happy going to.

@ak2018 I’m pretty independent about this stuff. My parents don’t really know how any of this works, so they’re just focused on the end result which can be frustrating. I don’t think they know that applying to college is more than just checking a box and sending in grades. Getting financial info from my parents can take days because my dad works so much. There’s not really anytime to have a conversation about finances. Fee waivers give me the agency to figure things out for myself though so there’s that.

@ak2018 I haven’t really talked to my parents at all yet and I’m worried because they never went to college so I don’t know how they will react or if they would understand. My plan is to put aside about 200 dollars if something goes wrong.

For the people who do listen to Hamilton, what is your top three favorite songs?

Mine personally is satisfied is my favorite by a lot, then helpless, then my shots/ cabinet battle 1 or farmers refuted.

@ak2018 They don’t really care, as long as I pay for the application fees.

Getting accepted to any Canadian university for me is a guaranteed 99% chance (because the “high enough marks and you’re in” system), and they’re expecting me to go to one (because all the US univs I’m applying to are crapshoot), so they’re not worried. And all of the American universities I’m applying to will give enough financial aid for everything to cost nothing or a very low amount.

Just got the IB Chemistry HL textbook by Pearson. I was told that I already covered most of the topics from my regular Chem class which I finished, and all I’ll have to do is learn a couple topics (ex. Thermodynamics, 3 other periodic trends, etc).

@julia35002

Have you seen the scene with Satisfied (from the illegal versions on youtube lol)? That scene was just so amazing and literally so beautiful I almost cried.

My favorties tho:
Dear Theodosia, Helpless, and It’s Quiet Uptown

@ak2018 My parents understand that a lot of schools are crapshoot, and since we’re in a position where we would need a lot of options (both merit and need), they’re letting me apply to a bunch of schools (26 total, but a lot have free apps but still scores though) in hopes that it’ll pay off financially in the long run. I’m planning on applying to schools on a wide range of dates so that it’s financially more viable for them pacing-wise. So this way, instead of having to take out a loan and pay $1200 worth of apps all on the same day, it’ll be like $200 per month instead. I’m considering cutting down my safety schools to save on this though (i have like 7 in my list lmao). Thankfully, I have a few hundred in savings that would help a lot. I’m also going to wait for EA results so I can cut a bunch of schools from my RD round without losing the money for applications

@julia35002 I would say that my favorite is probably Burn, then Wait For It, then Non-Stop? They’re all pretty close. It’s Quiet Uptown makes me cry every time though, it’s probably top 5.

Why is finding a job so hard?? :frowning:

@julia35002 I’d say Dear Theodosia, Cabinet Battle 1, and Farmer Refuted. I love all of them though!!!

I love them all too they’re just so good.

I officially start my job today! I’m incredibly nervous, especially because it’s my first job. I really don’t know what to expect, so we’ll see what happens. I hope that we’re able to close a bit early because I’ve been super busy and stressed out and tired this week.

I work at a camp during the summer and I don’t hold a job during the school year. Due to being in a sport that has a six/seven month long season (Sept.-March) it’s just not possible to hold a job with schoolwork on top of it. Good luck at your job!! I start the same day as my last final which works out perfectly.
If you are in need of a job I bet fast food, restaurants, and summer camps are hiring right now.

I had a job last summer and they said they would give me the same job this summer, but they haven’t called me about it yet :-/ How am I supposed to know if I need a different job or not? LOL
