High School Class of 2018

Looking at all of these college lists makes me nervous because I don’t have one. I have a top two schools which I would love to go to (one that is affordable and another that I would need some serious merit). I also plan on applying to surrounding state schools like UofA, USC, and UGA. It makes me nervous because I visited a small liberal arts school that wasn’t science centered so it made me realize that I need to cross off a lot of schools on my list. I think the reason I don’t have a list is because I have good enough stats to get into at least one of my tops schools. I’ve also noticed as I research schools, I have had a hard time finding schools that I am even relatively interested in.

@nyuhopeful44 With current admission rates, you may be being a bit optimistic in classifying UCLA and Cal as matches.

@nyuhopeful44 What state do you live in? UMich OOS is brutal I’ve heard.

@hopeyhippie If that person is out of state w/ higher stats I could see them as high matches/low reaches. They’re super hard to get into from in-state, but significantly easier out of state (and assuming you could afford the tuition).

@oPhilippos I generally agree, but think that it is more a low reach than a high match. And while it may be somewhat easier, I am not sure that it is “significantly easier” for OOS applicants. Particularly UCLA will be a reach; Cal is probably more likely.

This is what my list is looking like right now:

Reaches:
Mt. Holyoke

Matches:
Emerson
UConn

Safeties:
ECSU
Simmons

I clearly have a lot of research to do. orz I might add another reach, but I’m more concerned with finding more matches and safeties atm. I’d like to have 8-10 schools on my list when I start applying.

If anyone knows about colleges in the northeast that is good for communications/public relations, please PM me or share it here orz

@LeopardFire I’m looking into PR also! BU is a good school, but it is expensive and difficult to get into. Syracuse is one of the top two PR schools. Their comm school has an average SAT/ACT of 1290/29. Even though it has a lower acceptance rate (10-20%) the stats of the students are much lower than at BU, so it could be a good option. I don’t know your stats or budget so I can’t really recommend schools. After falling in love with the city of Boston, I want to find some more schools there that I love, are affordable, and have a good comm school.

Emerson is a great school for communications. I’m also looking into that school, but it will probably be out of my budget, even with a half tuition scholarship for honors college.

I would say to go onto the collegeboard and use their search tool. You can find schools with PR in the NE and then narrow it down by doing your own research. I personally like going through the curriculum for PR to find out if I like it or not. Also, if you plan on focusing on a certain area of PR such as sports, entertainment, nonprofit, or for profit, I would look into schools that allow you to specialize or pick up a minor or another major in something related to that.

Just an Update:

I’m running for class vice president and it looks like I might be a shoe-in to win!!!

Is anyone else planning to take a gap year or study abroad the summer after senior year? I’m not so sure about doing a full gap year, but I think I want to apply for a summer study scholarship.

Quick question. If I am taking Calc 1 this summer, should I take AP Calc BC? I was thinking about taking Calc 2 (fall) and Calc 3 and/or discrete math (spring) at the local community college. I’ll take the AP exam either way. Not having a scheduled math class would let me continue taking a research class (occasional study hall).

@carmen00 Thanks! ^^ I should definitely look into Syracuse more, I think there is a stigma in my family against it for some reason… I think they were/are a sports rival with UConn?

@Hamlon I’m afraid of doing a gap year. I don’t think I’d be productive with it. It seems like most people who take a gap year either partake in some type of program or travel, and I don’t think I have the mettle or money to do that.

I’d say skip BC, as long as your CC courses are explicitly stated on your app. The occasional study hall will probably do you a lot of good during college apps season.

Did anyone else take the AP Bio exam today? The FRQ section was rough to say the least.

@Hamlon I would say yes because that’s exactly what I’m doing with SAMS. I’ll just take BC Calc next year and hopefully not drop out.

sick the week before prom, student council members are arguing, literally cannot focus, and I owe like three assignments for chem. Anyone else having a bad day as well.

Other than that I would like to list some of the schools that I am looking to apply to

Reach:
Cornell
Williams
Duke

Match:
Dickinson
Bucknell
Lehigh
UPitt
Syracuse

Safety:
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Geneseo
Quinnipiac

Anybody have any tips, suggestions, or ideas?

This week is my last week of school and I am major stressing. I have a paper final due for my college English along with an outline for my final project for my other online class. I have a seminar presentation later this week. A makeup test for biology along with the final study guide this week. A math test this week with the final study guide due on Friday. I have just not been able to find the motivation to do everything.

@madison2000 I wish school ended for me this week. It was only mid-quarter on Friday. I still have until June 16th.

My college list has now changed dramatically. I don’t know what’s happening. I feel like I’m going insane and that I don’t have any idea anymore.

Reaches:
Caltech
Stanford
Princeton
Bowdoin
Harvard
MIT

Matches:
Reed (or maybe low reach?)
McGill
Oberlin
Case Western Reserve
BU

Safety:
UMaine

I’ll probably take Harvard, Stanford, and Caltech (whoa) off my list, but I don’t have a clue anymore on where I want to go (even though I love MIT but doubt I’ll get in or be able to pay for it).

14 more days of school for me. So ready to be done with school, since I’m done with my APs I think half my day is a study hall, but I’m not complaining.

@frazzledazzle samee on the going insane thing

I’m having trouble finding match schools. Either they are high reaches or super safeties. Help me.
