High School Class of 2018

@Hamlon I wasn’t in love with Reed when I visited through their diversity program in February. I loved the idea of the school but once I was actually there I felt out of place. It was a weird feeling. My username is from the band Diet Cig! I have no idea why they picked that name tbh

@carmen00

For our school, it’s the same, but you must have the AP exam and a minimum of a B average.

@Hamlon I used to have Reed on my college list, but last year this one girl from my school decided to go there (picking it over a bunch of great schools like Berkeley), but she’s basically the poster child for SJWs ($15 should be the minimum wage and if you don’t think that you’re capitalist scum, FDR was a bad president for not doing anything about racism, etc.). Like, I’m fine with people being part of the radical left (I’m decently left), but I’m not fine with that being the only viewpoint. The lack of diversity in opinions there concerns me a lot. I wouldn’t want to go somewhere I’d be constantly challenged for being religious. To me, Reed and Liberty University are the same school on opposite ends of the spectrum (if Liberty was any good in their academics).

@oPhilippos haha $15 is the minimum wage in Seattle, and it will be $13.50 across Washington state by 2020 (We voted on it with an overwhelming majority saying yes, so).

@snowfairy137 i mean I agree with the $15 minimum wage but I’m saying that this specific person went out of her way to criticize people who believed it should be raised to $12 first nationally (as in the plan that HIlary Clinton initially proposed in her campaign but who cares she’s irrelevant now). point is, there’s a part of the radical left that doesn’t recognize progress unless it’s to their high standards which seems to be the consensus at Reed

@oPhilippos

Don’t kill me, but I personally think minimum wage should be left up to the states. Down here in texas, products are very cheap and pay is very low (even for educated folks).

While $15 would make sense in California/Washington as a minimum wage, $15 in a place like Texas is already decent money. Trying to force states like Texas into a $15 minimum wage would completely devastate the Texan economy.

I understand the need for a federal minimum wage, but a high federal minimum wage would really hurt states that have comparatively low product prices and salaries.

@oPhilippos @RMNiMiTz Yeah, idk, I just like the minimum wage here bc I’m a teenager who’s being paid minimum wage.

On another note, I just booked my plane ticket and paid the fee for my aerospace program in Seattle this summer! (It’s only an hour fight, but that would mean someone driving for 10 hours (round trip) to drop me off, so it just makes more sense/costs the same to fly). Right after that, my grandma is picking me up and we’re going to drive down to Northern California to camp with extended family. Then I have my STEM summer camp job for 4 weeks, and then just my internship and maybe time at the lake or something. I’m excited for summer to start!

@snowfairy137

congrats :slight_smile:

What college are you applying to/already applied for?

For me, this summer is basically writing essays, applying for scholarships, and topping off my EC’s. Early admission application starts in July so there goes my summer :confused:

After I get all my apps in, I will probably just spend the last 2-3 weeks prepping for Acdec and watching Netflix :stuck_out_tongue:

My parents wanted to go on vacation, but I just wanted this summer to work on my college apps.

@RMNiMiTz

Dude I totally agree tho with the thing about minimum wage. Like I think it’s really hard to strike that balance of a nationally mandated minimum wage vs. a state determined minimum wage though. I’d like the thought of a $15 minimum wage, but that should really only be implemented in higher-living-cost communities like California/New York (city)/Washington but rural areas would be fine with it at $10. My only issue is that to minimize the negative temporary economic impact (with the market readjusting to account for higher wages), the minimum wage needs to be raised everywhere at the same time and the only way to do that would be to have it federally mandated. It’s a question that’s hard to strike a balance for lol

lmao how did we get here I was just ranting about an annoying girl i knew that went to reed

How many schools are you guys applying to? I’m applying to 9 I think and the application fees are adding up to $305. That doesn’t even include sending scores and the css profile. I’m not looking forward to this.

@carmen00 I am also applying to 9 and looking at the costs is not fun…Including prices for my AP tests, and SAT, ACT, etc, my entire college application process will be close to $1800. Yikes

This June I’m going to Cabo San Lucas for a few days. Our last two trips to Mexico were family visits so I’m excited to stay at a nice hotel and not worry about running out of water lol. In mid-July my dad and I are flying to Boston to check out colleges. Then we are driving to New Haven to visit Yale, and to Ithaca for my engineering program at Cornell. After that program ends I’m flying to San Jose for another STEM program at Santa Clara University! I’m really excited for this summer. No plans on when I’m going to start my applications yet

Hey Everybody,
The last three days have been killer, somewhat depressing, but ended in such a weird way that I’m just sitting here like “What the actual hell is wrong with me?” :))

So you guys know how my week started out really well. That kind of changed Wednesday night. So apparently my dad wasn’t paying attention when I told him a two months ago that I would. I reminded him that night and then he said he didn’t know he’d have to pick me up from my NASA program and then come home for a few hours and then drive me to Carnegie Mellon. And he already scheduled his work times. He got pretty mad. I told him that I told him quite a while back, but I guess it was my fault for assuming he would have remembered. Anyway, he said that I would have to choose between SAMS and the NASA program, however, he pretty much made that choice for me and chose SAMS because it was longer and “more important”. (My mom wouldn’t have been able to take me since she can’t really travel well long distances by car to unfamiliar places and her caracts makes it almost impossible for her to drive at night.) I was pretty devasted by the news, especially since I was planning the trip for months and I was on the assumption that I could go even with SAMS. I woke up in a bad mood the next morning and went to school knowing I had to take my Reading SOL. I took the dang thing, finished in an hour and 15 minutes and went to my next class not even caring if I pass advanced or just passed. Yesterday was a little better. I took my POE final and we made salsa. We finished watching the Bee Movie too.

Last night was kind of the better part of my latter week. Throughout the week, I contacted the NASA program coordinator to notify her that I couldn’t go. She then listed a few of the ways I still might be able to attend (including public transportation) and knowing my parents and how money is pretty tight, as it almost always is, I had to decline. However, she then asked if I could do anything through Skype, and I happily said yes. At that moment, I just thought “wow”. She then explained how she really wanted me to be there since I was officially chosen to be our NASA mock mission’s leader/director and I was also the top-ranked student in my class (got a 98%). She said to call her on Monday and thanked me for being a diligent student. So while I guess it didn’t turn out exactly the way I wanted it to, I’m just really glad it somehow worked. While I won’t be able to participate in all the program has offer, I can’t believe that I’m going to have opportunity to say that I led an entire NASA mission from my bedroom. That definitely needs to be a college essay for me. So yeah, that’s pretty much been my life lately.

I apologize for the fairly long post. I just needed to get that all out. To be honest, I really need this year to end!! Junior year started off pretty well and then started to get worse and worse. I don’t think I can take anymore of life’s surprises for the rest of the year. :)) I have three more weeks and I’m gone and unofficially a senior!

@ak2018 Yes, I agree that will definitely make a great essay! I hope senior year I should much better for you.

Have you guys decided which schools you are applying ED/EA to, if any?

@dietcig I’m going to apply EA to northeastern and emerson. I’m applying to four publics with rolling admissions so I should get those decisions early also. So then I’ll only be waiting til April for three of my schools.

Honestly, I’m so tired of school I don’t even do homework anymore. And this is just the beginning of the third trimester, but we had no holiday (because last year’s summer school was cancelled and turned to this year’s Easter lessons) and I’m burnt out and feeling sorry for myself. I mean, I couldn’t do a simple geometry proof, no theorems involved. When I was on my math high I could’ve dissolved it in seconds. Now I’m crashing. Sorry for all the negativity but I needed to vent coherently. Y’all talking about end of school and I ain’t got that till July! *shivers

Is it possible to do MIT EA and Princeton SCEA? I mean technically, could they catch you? Forget all the ethics stuff for a second.

@gigichuck Depending on how your school works, your counselor might catch you.

In my AP Lit class, we are learning about the Manson murders until the end of the school year (it’s a senior class, otherwise we would probably be working on college essays or the English Regents). In APUSH we are doing a video project on a topic of US History that we chose from a pre-approved list. It’s due on Monday, and I still have to finish the script, record me speaking it, and make the entire movie. RIP my soul.

@carmen00 @dietcig

I’m only applying to 2 schools, (my state public which has auto-admit) and a safety school (local school that is super-easy to get into).

Can anyone inform me about what the CSS Profile is? I know that it has something to do with FA, but I haven’t really heard much about it.
