My next SAT is now in 2 weeks… frightening stuff :((
(1) because it’s an SAT and (2) it’ll be the second standardized test I’ll ever take

@kassh4 a lot of private schools and only some public schools require it in addition to the fafsa. It’s through the college board and it basically just asks for more information than the fafsa does. But you have to pay to fill it out. It’s $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional one. Idk I think it’s ridiculous that you have to basically pay for financial aid.
So I have this 9-10 minute APUSH video to make and currently everything I’ve recorded (voice-over stuff) is around 5 minutes and 30 seconds. I have my work cut out for me… and really long transition slides haha
@ak2018 I’m really sorry about the transportation thing. Is there any way you could carpool with someone or find public transportation or something? Maybe you could get a job after to help pay your parents back? For me, I choose to fly bc it is actually comparable to the amount of gas money it would cost to drop me off in Seattle, and nobody in my family is willing to do a 10 hour (round trip) road trip to get me there. Maybe you could ask if you could have the theoretical gas costs from if your dad drove you (remember he’s have to do a round trip, so that’s twice the millage) and maybe combined with personal funds you could make public transportation work?
Here’s my math: 450 miles round trip to seattle, assume 20 miles per gallon and $2.50 per gallon is $56. My plane ticket was $73. A bus or train ticket would have been even cheaper (but less convenient). Either way, that’s a $17 difference.
@snowfairy137 Unfortunately, my parents don’t like the idea of me depending on someone to give me a ride. They also won’t allow me to get a job during the school year since it takes away the focus from my studies. I think this “Skype” option is probably just better for me since I still get to participate.
@ak2018 that sucks, sorry
I 100% wouldn’t risk it. Your counselor/teachers have to send lots of important documents like transcripts and recs and most likely someone won’t be fooled. You might slip up at an interview It’s really not worth it. There’s no advantage to applying to MIT EA and Princeton SCEA has a nearly negligible boost as well. Just pick one and go with it. You’re not binded to either of the schools!
@gigichuck and if they find out, they will definitely rescind their admission (if they give it to you) and most likely notify other schools that you applied to telling them “Hey, this kid broke our rules. They aren’t trustworthy, don’t accept them” and then college admissions will become a mess for you.
So I’m currently making the posters for my V-NASA clubs official interest meeting date on June 1st. So far, about 12 people are interested!
Also, I’m currently using NASA internship website to apply for internships for next year. My program coordinator has told me that I’m pretty much guaranteed to be interning at NASA Langley after high school, but if since there are so many NASA buildings in my area, I could apply to anyone of them and still be a shoe-in. Apparently, they give priority to the applicants that are already affiliated with NASA programs as am I.
@snowfairy137 Hope you plan to have a free summer next summer because you could intern with them too.
So what are your guys’ plans for this summer?
I know I’ve told you guys I’m going to be doing a lot of summer programs, but I’m also going to be taking a few online classes as well.
This Summer (Summer 2017)
+GEOL 195 - Special Topics in Geology (NASA-Based Lab)
+MATH 21-115 - Basic Differential Calculus (Carnegie Mellon SAMS) (5 Credit Credits)
World History from 1500/Geography
*Physics Seminar (AP Physics 1)
*Programming Seminar
I attended the Questbridge Pomona conference yesterday and visiting confirmed for me that Pomona is where I want to be. I’m going to apply to the fly-in program in the fall and cross my fingers for the college match results in December! I learned so much about financial aid and writing college essays. The admissions officer from Williams was a breath of fresh air and so friendly. I’m going to take another look at Williams and Amherst because of her.
The co-founder of QB spoke to us and I have to say he was probably one of the smartest people I have ever listened to. His talk made me rethink the reasoning behind some of my goals and that I don’t have to constantly chase approval (both implicit and explicit) to validate success.
@Hamlon That’s actually really great! Honestly, with Questbridge, my main concern was that I would be too unqualified. I fit a few of the recommended characteristics of a good applicant, but I don’t fit a few of them as well mostly because the way my GPA and class rank are right now were out of my control. However, after getting into SAMS and my NASA program and realizing that I was being way too hard on myself, I feel like I might have a chance now. I’m definitely planning to apply when the application comes out. Hopefully, it comes out while we’re at Carnegie Mellon so we could try and work on it with the others who plan to apply. My Matriculate advisor is planning on helping me with those essays once the application opens. I honestly can’t wait to write my essays because I’m actually pretty good at essay-writing and bringing the readers into my story head on. And I definitely have a lot of stories to tell! The only thing that’s going to be pretty hard is writing the biographical essay because it means writing about both the spectacular and unfortunate events of my life. :))
Also, who here knows they are going to apply to Questbridge? I’m thinking we should make a QB group chat when the app comes out. The MITES group chat was beyond LIT!
Add me to the QB chat!
Also, know that APs are over and the year is coming to a close, I’m actually kind of starting to get ahead for next year. :)) I’ve started to read the Poisonwood Bible for AP Lit and I’m looking through AP Physics C videos. I guess I really am a nerd! :))
I’m planning on doing a little vlog while I’m at SAMS too. So there will be that!
My summer plans:
-DE Literature (online)
-DE African American History (online)
-Washington Aerospace Scholars summer residency
-STEM Summer Camp Counsolor (2nd year doing this)
-SolidWorks internship at a small local company
-Camping with extended family
-time at lake cabin that we rent from a family friend every year
-August SAT (plus studying)
-Start College/Scholarship Applications
-Random robotics team stuff
-A project connected with the trip to El Salvador I did last year that my friends and I are working on
It sounds like a lot but my summer legit starts June 14th and ends like Sept 20th so that’s over 3 full months of break.
My Summer Plans:
-Day Camp Counselor
-AP Summer Work (I am taking 4 AP’s but 3 of them have summer work)
-Shadowing my family physician
-Starting and hopefully finishing my application essays
-Studying for the Sept ACT (I have a 29 but hopefully with some studying I can bump it to a 32)
My summer plans:
-Summer job at Salsa Fiesta
-Lots of volunteering with animals and back to school organizations that help underprivileged kids
-DE Intro to Business
-DE World Religions
-DE Intro to Ethics
-ACT and SAT studying
-Working on college essays
-Apply to at least 3 scholarships
In addition to my already set summer plans, I’m going to be taking AP Computer Science A online starting in mid-August and I’ll be leaving school a week early for NOVEC Youth Tour.
@ak2018 Whoa! You’re so…active (for lack of another word). I think you’re the kind of person who gets into an ivy with a 1300 SAT (not that you have a 1300 SAT or that you want to go to an Ivy). You’re arguably the most positive person here. Stealing your vibes is my latest pastime.
