High School Class of 2018

My summer plans:

  • Sociology 101 through CC (I seriously have to schedule a time to take the prereq English test at the college, though…)
  • Vacation Bible School for a week in July
  • Possibly this “leadership internship” thing that’s going to be at my elementary school that gives me ~40hrs of community service and would probably look good on apps and stuff, but I have to look into it more
  • AP Summer Work and possibly a summer assignment for my French 4 DE class
  • College apps
  • Scholarship apps maybe?
  • Working with my dad in his auto shop (doesn’t pay very much but it’s better than nothing)

@ak2018 I think you’ll be fine if you get your counselor to write a very detailed letter about your freshman year circumstances. In some countries it is extremely difficult to make A’s and B’s with a C being seen as a great grade. I’m a little shocked that your school included grades from another country in your gpa. Doesn’t really make sense because there is no universal grading system. Recalculate your gpa without freshman year courses and include that in the additional information section of college apps. If you can, find out what your rank would have been with freshman grades excluded.

@Marg532 I’ve always wanted to learn how to fix cars. Do you actually work with your dad in the shop as a mechanic?

@Hamlon Not right now, I mostly do cleaning and cutting up cardboard and trying to figure out the billing system haha but this summer I want to learn how to do at least the basics (oil change, check the dipstick, change a tire, etc) because I’ll be taking drivers ed and I will have a car soon hopefully and I don’t want to be completely ignorant when it comes to car stuff. I am bound and determined to not be the person to fall for the charge on their bill for “headlight fluid” (true story that I heard lol)

But on another note… I’m currently working on my video project for APUSH that’s due tomorrow, even though I’m super sick and I have a 98% chance of not going to school tomorrow. Which sucks, because I have my band concert tomorrow night and I’ll have to do a written assignment to make it up… Plus I’m missing a day of algebra 2 which won’t help me because there’s already so much I don’t know and understand in that class… I hate being sick :frowning:

Add me to the QB chat once that’s made as well!

Here are my summer plans:
Girls State (mid June)
SSP (late June through early August)
Leaders’ School (mid August)
Folk Festival (last weekend in August)

I have an APUSH project due tomorrow. It’s a really cool project that my teacher had us do. We had to do a project about our personal, cultural, and political histories as well as what we think our future holds for us in 10 and 25 years. It’s a lot of fun! We start presentations tomorrow.
My AP Lang project right now is also pretty cool. We are doing an independent study type project in which we try to improve on a hobby like cooking, sewing, knitting, or painting. I’m doing painting. Tip of advice: do not attempt to paint with oil paints when you don’t know what you’re doing. It makes a gigantic mess.

On the topic of summer programs, I’ll be doing Boy’s State, and CMU SAMS with @ak2018
If a miracle somehow happens at Boy’s State, and I’m selected for Boy’s Nation, I’d probably have to drop SAMS.

Also, just out of curiosity, would anyone in this chat be interested in creating a Discord server to chat on? Just throwing the idea out there.

Update on my week- got a 30 on my ACT, and I’m kinda depressed about it, since I got a 24 in science. Hopefully I don’t mess up this bad in June.

Also, college fairs have piqued my interest in Georgetown. My new list looks something like this

Harvard
Yale
Brown
Columbia
Georgetown
Macalester
Northwestern?
WashU?
Pomona?
UMN

I’m trying to be on CC more often, but my days are usually packed. This next week I have a presentation to faculty, a weeklong UMN physics final, my physics final lab, 2 english essays, and a calc test as well. Also have to finish up my online gym.

I won’t be sleeping much.

Wow, everyone has a lot planned for summer!

My plans:
-Research Internship (all summer :), did the same one last year but my mentor invited me back even though the official program has changed so HS students can’t join )
-Special Trip (hehe not gonna be specific for privacy but it’s all expenses-paid and very cool)
-Colleges and Scholarship Apps (lots and lots)

And that’s pretty much it! Plus some summer homework but let’s pretend that doesn’t exist …I did want to do this 1 week med shadowing program but sadly it conflicts with my trip…so imma just have to rely on the measly 20 shadowing hours I have lol

And @madison2000 ooh I didn’t know you were also interested in medicine ! I feel like I’m starting to recognize a bunch more usernames and get to know people on this thread better!!

Ooh, mysterious  @LushLillies Can you hint on where or what you are doing on your trip? You’ve piqued my interest.

I’m going to guess some kind of college visit.

@LushLillies medicine is definitely something I have been passionate about so I hope to get my insight over the summer. My goal is to be a pediatrician but I want to major is excercise science or bio with a focus in maternal and child health (my top choice has this option) along with a possible minor in Mandarin Chinese

@FreePariah hm, I’m not sure how far I can go without any identity leaks but I’m going to California…and it’s STEM related !

@madison2000 ooh that’s super cool  whoa you have everything all planned out! and it’s cool you have an interest in Chinese…I’m a native Chinese speaker but want to become more fluent in Spanish, I’ve taken AP and can mostly speak but I get super nervous speaking to strangers and want to probably volunteer abroad medically in Central or South America for practice !

I’m curious about exercise science as a major for you! Normally I see people use it as a pre-PT track (physical therapist). But I think it would be helpful regardless, especially for anatomy and general healing. I love slightly unconventional majors for med! Personally I want to double major in CS and Biochem, minor in Spanish but I KNOW that isn’t going to happen unless I get into the schools on my list that offer Computational Bio, Bioinformatics…

My summer plans:

  • Do fun things (not sure yet)
  • Expand Amazon.com business
  • August SAT Study
  • IB Chem and Physics self-study
  • CommonApp Essays
  • Road trip or plane to USA to take August SAT

@acomfysofa

What’s your amazon business? Seems like it could be interesting.

Things I plan on doing this summer:
-paid internship at a hospital
-CommonApp essays
-UC personal statement essays
-studying for the August SAT
-Questbridge application
-fun stuff (boba runs, going to to the nightmarket, reading)
-summer homework (cries internally)

@RMNiMiTz I sell a “private-label” product (generic Alibaba product with your own branding) on Amazon.com. Got the funds to start it up from an iPhone and iPad repair business. Got the funds to start up the iPhone and iPad repair business from a $20 allowance every 2 weeks.

Not too interesting when compared to rich people with huger businesses and mega startups, but maybe E for Effort for someone with a lot less $$$ ;)?

Like @hamlon I was also at the Questbridge Pomona Conference. I loved Dr. McCullough’s speech and how he stated to pursue our dreams regardless if others approved of them or not. The conference cemented my decision to not apply to California schools, because I really want to experience something new. I learned so much about essay writing and the college match process. The Wellesley admissions officer was so lovely and super helpful.

Please add me to the Questbridge chat!

@Hamlon Pomona College is so nice! I’m excited for you. I have a friend going to Scripps next year so I’m hoping she might be able to show me around this fall. Williams was on my list until I really looked at its location. My dad laughed at the thought of me attending an outdoorsy college on the edge of a forest. I’m more of an urban person.

Sorry for the double posts but I always think of more things to say a few minutes after I post something.

I just came back from the Exploring College Options conference with Harvard, Stanford, Georgetown, U Penn, and Duke. My dad and I were both surprised by Duke’s high quality presentation. Their admissions worker really gave it his all. It was good enough for me to pause and consider adding Duke to my list. On the way back from the conference my dad and I talked about my Common App essay and he gave me a great idea so I’m excited about that.

My APUSH project is to interview an older family member and transcribe it. I had fun interviewing my grandma today. Unfortunately, now I need to translate from English to Spanish with only an audio recording. Thankfully my teacher doesn’t want us to submit the recordings because my Spanish was sooo bad. I’m much better at reading and writing Spanish than speaking it.

Can I also be added to the QB group chat?

My summer plans are:
-June SAT
-traveling (visiting family)
-maybe babysitting (gotta get that $$$)
-Questbridge Emory Conference
-6 week study abroad in Korea
-Probably start some college apps/questbridge and plan out activities for my clubs
-studying (I’m going to be missing the first week of senior year bc of my study abroad)
