High School Class of 2018

@snowfairy137 @frazzledazzle Oh, okay see that is in my student council constitution so it is an amendment that must be followed. And I am also thinking of running for NHS P!

@RMNiMiTz I’m still configuring the final list of 10 but currently the list is half HBCU’s and half PWI’s
Vanderbilt
University of Houston
University of Texas at Dallas
NCAT
Howard University
University of Miami
Spelman College
Florida A&M University
Trinity University
Washington University in St. Louis

Sorry for the brag, but not quite sure who to tell and thought you guys would appreciate. My team won a national competition this weekend and they brought in lots of guest judges (basically to fundraise money for the organization) one of whom sponsored an award for highest scorer. I couldn’t win that since I was in a different division, but afterwards this man (hedge fund manager/MLB owner) came up to me personally because of my strong quiz bowl performance. He said he heard that I was a junior and next year to contact him next year as he is an alumnus of PRINCETON and would love to reach out to them for me. I’ve just been staring at his business card in disbelief.

@reidd799 That’s actually really cool. I wouldn’t shouted in excitement tbh :))

@reidd799 that’s awesome!

For any minorities in this thread, does diversity matter to you at all in choosing which colleges to apply to? From my list I wanted to make sure i picked colleges that were very diverse but at the same time I wanted to also apply to HBCU’s to be open to the option of being closer to my heritage and like minded individuals(culturally).

@Iridescentgaze For me, it doesn’t really matter as much. This being my second year at a school that is known to not be very diverse, I’ve come to not really care about being a minority-minority instead of being a minority-majority (predominantly black) in middle school. :)) I kind of care more about the “largeness” of the student body and whether or not people generally get along, but my top priority is finding a place where I can feel I can get a good education from.

@julia35002 I can relate. I probably won’t be available for a merit scholarship from them so affording school there is going to be difficult. OOS tuition would be brutal, but I really like the school.

@LeopardFire Happy Birthday!

@reidd799 I have given diversity some thought but I don’t actively seek it? Like I cringe when I find out a school I like is 80% white, but I’m not googling “most diverse schools.” My backup plan is to attend an UC or Cal State. Both systems have large amounts of Latinx students so I know I would be fine there. I really love the diversity at Pomona College. Unfortunately, I probably would not get any aid there.

@Iridescentgaze

Diversity is DEFINITELY a consideration for me. Going to a school full of rich white kids, I’m really sick of that kind of culture. The white kids saying the n word, rich kids thinking they’re entitled to good grades without doing work, etc. I love my school, but I’m so sick of this kind of culture. I also want to be somewhere that there is a substantial Asian population (but not overwhelming). I’m the only full Filipino kid in my entire high school, and I feel like I’m missing out on that part of my culture. I grew up and live in an immigrant household and the culture is alive and well at home, but Fil-Am culture is just something unique that I wish I was apart of more. I just feel whitewashed and dissociated from who I really am. My friends from local large public schools are doing things like joining hip hop dance teams together and going on boba runs after school while I’m over here listening to a girl whine about how her nanny didn’t make her quinoa right

@LeopardFire Happy Birthday!!!

@Iridescentgaze I come from school that is nearly 95% white so diversity isn’t a huge deal to me. Almost every college is going to have more diversity than my high school lol. I’ve grown up in a conservative area even though I’m extremely liberal, so I feel like I can do well at schools that are on either end of the spectrum. Idk I just feel like growing up in an area that’s the opposite of who I am allowed me to be more tolerant of people.

I have a list of 20 colleges, but 10 are Questbridge partners. Hopefully, I’ll cut the rest down to like 5 or so.

@reidd799 That’s awesome! My grandma’s parents housed a Jewish man in their home during WWII. Turns out she has found out who his great nephew is and he is an astrophysics professor at Princeton and an alum of MIT. I’m applying to both of those schools and for astrophysics specifically at Princeton.

@LeopardFire Happy Birthday!

@Iridescentgaze I want to go to a school with diversity so I’m away from the very-much-whiteness of Maine.

@Iridescentgaze I’m white and the whole region of the country is live in is very white. I dont care too much one way or the other about diversity, because if I stay near here it’s not gonna happen. I don’t wanna stay near here but other criteria about a college are just more important to me. Don’t like rich kids who only talk about sports though (cough cough Gonzaga).

Just thought of this analogy. We have the kind of “diversity” you see in the movies. There’s that one black kid, that one Asian kid, that one Hawaian kid etc, but really it’s very white. I think it has to do with the history of who settled this part of the country.

@LeopardFire happy birthday!

I just found out about this amazing merit scholarship to RPI! Participating high schools select one junior to receive the Rensselaer Medal. If you’re accepted into RPI then that medal automatically earns you a renewable $25k scholarship. I was planning to ditch my school’s awards ceremony on Friday because we have no classes that day. Now, I’m super excited to go. Fingers crossed I get the medal. I recently asked my Calc teacher for a letter of Rec to a summer program at RPI too. I can’t stop smiling omg I need to get my hopes down

My daughter goes to an very diverse public high school. It is about 32% white then the rest is close to 1/3 black, 1/3 Asian, and 1/3 Hispanic. We have kids from tons of countries and over 60 languages spoken at home besides English. It is a school in which a group of 4 friends can and often is different ethnicities. There is not a language that is predominant other than English so typically the kids speak English etc.

Religiously it is also very mixed and it is not unusual for my Jewish daughter to be friends with Catholics, Muslims, atheists etc. Financially it ranges from homeless kids to upper middle class though I’m sure a few are very wealthy. The majority are probably lower to middle class. Although my daughter is white she will probably think it is a bit odd to go to a mostly white school.

When visiting a college they were talking about diversity and explaining how they were diverse. Then they went around and asked kids where they were from. When they got to my daughter one of them said that she probably wouldn’t find the school diverse even if the other students found it diverse. In terms of diversity my daughter would probably prefer a school with diversity but also in which people don’t hang out based on their ethnicity.

That said I was at a high school meeting with the new principal who started this year. He said he came from a school district that was predominantly black. He said people constantly say he is used to diversity and he keeps telling people know it isn’t diverse it is just mostly black kids. He then said that while the school is very integrated the one area that stands out to him as not that integrated is AP classes. He finds that math and science APs are still predominantly Asian males and English AP are mostly female mixed white and Asian.

This is a stark contrast to where I grew up. I was in a basically all white area and was the token Jewish kid.

@dietcig One of my best friends got that medal last week!

@mom2girls2 being white doesn’t mean you don’t speak a different language at home and not being white doesn’t mean you do. I’m half Russian on my Mom’s side and about as white as you can get. (Mom was born in Asia tho bc that’s how Russia works so technically she can say she’s Asian lol).

@oPhilippos I definitely feel the same way as you. I’ve always attended predominately white schools and I’m sick of the culture too. It’s becoming very frustrating the least to see how much covert racism and extreme entitlement there is. And I feel like it has gotten worse in my school tbh because of Trump. People will directly say very racist and stereotypical things towards black people in front of my face! And I always have that internal battle of deciding to speak up and say anything or just let it go and not bother me. It’s tiring. I know racism is everywhere but I want to ensure that I feel welcome at any university I choose HBCU or not.

@snowfairy137 I totally agree with your statement! I go to a fairly diverse school, but there are still lots of people who would fall into the “white” category. However, most of them are first-gen American born, meaning their parents were immigrants…nearly everyone has strong cultural pride, speaking Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Portuguese…it’s really amazing! For my school, I think it has to do with the fact that we are a test-entry school and children of immigrants tend to have a lot of drive and good work ethic from their parents that tried so hard to get a better life for them.

This isn’t just exclusive to white; a lot of Asian (esp East Asian and Indian) people our age are also first-gen American born. And we do well overall. It’s amazing having another language and another culture. The only thing that irks me is when people who live in America hate on our country and talk about how amazing their “home” country is. Please. I am grateful to live here, and I would never give up this opportunity for anything. Be passionate about your culture, but don’t forget the soil you stand on for goodness sake, don’t take everything for granted. I know it isn’t easy to move back to other countries, so obviously I wouldn’t just tell people to “move back”…but sometimes it makes me feel really upset when people are like that.

This turned into a rant but okay :slight_smile:

@iridescentgaze I’m so sorry your schools like that. I would say that in general, even though my school’s very white, its also fairly liberal and nowhere near the Southern US at all, so I haven’t noticed much racism or anything. No
one I know likes Trump thank god.

@LushLillies Imo neither the US or Russia are great places to live right now. I’d rather be somewhere more liberal like Canada or Europe.
