High School Class of 2018

@DaEmmJay23 im thinking about using coalition app for umd college park and jmu! apparently Virginia tech won’t accept it for fall 2018, but I would have used it for that too

Are there any benefits to using the Coalition over the Common app? @DaEmmJay23 @doctornc

@Iridescentgaze I actually do spend a lot of time in Houston because my sister lives there! But you’re probably right, I guess it’s different seeing the city as a visitor rather than as someone actually living there. Also thank you for your advice, I still really did like Rice’s academics and campus, so I think I’ll still apply!

I do not know much about any benefits it has over the common app, but I do know that some schools that don’t do common app might go through with coalition, such as umd and jmu @kassh4

@doctornc Are you gonna write two different essays in that case?

@DaEmmJay23 Yeah I will. Hopefully they both turn out well lol

@magnetnh
When I was in eighth grade, I focused on doing things I enjoyed. I rode my bike a lot, walked my dog, and went skiing. I also played volleyball. I didn’t even start thinking about the SAT until about 4 weeks before I took it, and that didn’t hurt me in the slightest. A lot of people don’t realize that you study for the SAT every time you learn something new. I’d focus on helping your kid learn time management, prioritization, and organization skills, as well as giving them a gentle push towards steady high grades.

is anyone here applying ea to umich? i’ve started crafting my application and i’m majorly stressed

@jf09199 I am considering applying there EA because its a great school! What parts of the app are stressing you?

@kassh4 no there arent

One of the experiences of college I’m most looking forward to is being able to eat Asian food at the dining hall. What about you guys?

So the science I’m taking next year (this year?) is an independent study, because it was the only science that would fit in my schedule. Up until now I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it, but I think I’ve figured it out! I’ve always loved bio, and especially the genetics unit we did in my bio class, so I think I’m going to focus on genetics.

A girl last year who did the independent study made it almost like an experiment, where she came up with a hypothesis and stuff, but I couldn’t think of any way to do that with the subject that I want to learn more about, so I came up with another idea. I think I’m going to treat it as a hybrid science-history course. My plan:

In the beginning of the year, I’m going to learn the basics about genetics (DNA, RNA, chromosomes, etc) but then I’m going to veer off and make it kind of like a “genetics through history” class where I research genetic mutations during different points in history and stuff. For instance: that one place in Europe where the black plague didn’t affect anyone because of their genetic mutation. My mom said she watched a Discovery channel documentary about it and I guess that mutation also makes people immune to HIV/AIDS. So for this example I would research it, learn, etc.

I’m not a very good science student when it comes to applications (labs, experiments, etc), but I’m the best science student when it comes to wanting to learn about science. So, I’m truly making this independent study tailored to my science interests and my learning capabilities, rather than trying to do something similar to the one other student who has taken this independent study so far. I know this was probably really boring to read, but I just felt like I needed somewhere to put it haha

@xxluvforeverxx I’m looking forward to studying in a library. Also the whole not living with my parents thing is a huge plus :))

@Marg532 That sounds like a really interesting class, likewise the genetics portion of bio was my favorite part.

@xxluvforeverxx I’m ready to get out of my small town and live on my own.

Have any if you guys visited universities with AMAZING art museums? If so, do you mind giving me the names? I love science but Art is something that I cannot go a day without thinking about. Also, I’m looking forward to studying in libraries AND living away from my parents(nothing bad, sometimes you just need your own space

@Marg532 I want to take that class now.

SAT Subject test scores out tomorrow!

@xxluvforeverxx I think they come out Wed morning at like 5 am est.

@kassh4 You’re right. Ugh, I’ve gotta wait longer.

@xxluvforeverxx I wasn’t even originally taking this class to begin with! I was supposed to take Infectious Diseases with my Bio teacher, aka the best science teacher I’ve had, but my schedule didn’t work with it and the only way I could do a 4th year of science was to take the independant study, which basically takes place in my study hall(s). I’m glad it’s so flexible - I literally create my own curriculum with the supervision of my science teacher (who also teaches Bio, but also Human and Social Bio which I took this past year and I also had her for 8th grade general science). Basically, as long as I’m not screwing around doing nothing, and am learning something, I get half a credit. It gives me the freedom to learn about anything and not have to worry about conforming to a layed out, rigid curriculum. I also can give myself less of a workload during the busiest months of my year during musical, and the week of AP tests! It’s so nice to be able to learn about things I’m interested in, instead of a strict curriculum.
