High School Class of 2018

@ak2018 I really like A haha I also did that prompt, and am talking about being a multipotentialite (if you’ve ever heard the term “renaissance man/person” it’s the same thing with a more modern name). The intro to the concept is starting out with that cliche “I was born in the wrong generation” statement but saying I belong in 1300 CE aka the Renaissance and then connect it into renaissance people and multipotentialites. I’m definitely going to try at least one other prompt or essay, though, but I really like this one.

Don’t talk about B because it sounds pretentious if you’re talking about the future

I’m going to a leadership camp for the weekend! Hopefully I learn how to be more assertive ;;;

Ughhhh I’m so ready to graduate. The time has come for me to grab the bull by its horns and take the world by storm. Only 10 more months!!!

Boo sat prep. If it weren’t for nmf I’d be done :frowning:

@snowfairy137 If you have that high of an SSI, you really don’t need to study. You should be fine plus you got a 36, and the Math and English are pretty similar on both tests.

@kassh4 yeah but I’m taking it in August so my brain is not in school mode

Also I find sat questions way more convoluted than ACT ones.

wow it feels like I’ve been gone forever (it was probably only 2 weeks lol)
My dad and I visited Harvard, BU, Northeastern, Yale, Fordham, and Columbia before driving up to Ithaca for my program at Cornell. BU isn’t special enough for me to travel across the country for. I really enjoyed NU, Harvard, and Fordham. Yale’s campus did not feel welcoming and I’m just not interested in adding Columbia to my list.

I finished up my two engineering programs. CATALYST at Cornell had its pros and cons. I was disappointed that we did no engineering projects. However, we were introduced to an inspiring civil engineer. She is probably the coolest person I will ever meet. I felt like I could do anything after her speech. Black women are so powerful! And the people I became friends with all inspire me as well. I loved being surrounded by other black and brown students who are all determined to succeed in college. Some bs went down at the end of the program but I’m trying not to let that ruin my experience. Cornell is giving us fee waivers but I don’t think I will be applying. I can’t imagine myself struggling to walk up those hills in a foot of snow. I wish the school was on the West Coast :frowning:

The Summer Engineering Seminar (SES) at Santa Clara University was absolutely AMAZING! For being such a small school this program exceeded all of my expectations. We were always busy building new projects, learning binary code, and enjoying the perfect weather. And best of all the program was free!

I’ve had a busy July but at the same time it feels like I’ve gotten nothing done?
I still have yet to start on any of my summer homework. I’m confident about finishing my Calc and Econ packets. Not sure how I’m going to read 4 books for AP Lit and study for a test in less than two weeks…
I have jotted down some ideas for the UC application. As of now, I’m not sure what to do with my Common App. I’m leaning toward discussing my experience in Mock Trial and connecting it to broader life lessons I’ve learned from it. And thanks to the program at Cornell, I have a nice way to tie it together to Civil Engineering/Environmental Studies. Fordham doesn’t have Engineering so I’m not sure how to structure my common app around that. Maybe my idea will end up being used for a supplement??

@dietcig You’re going to find lots of snow in every New England/Northeastern college haha based on the colleges you just listed you just need to get used to it! It’s not too bad, but then again, I’ve lived in New York for 16 years :))

@dietcig Im visiting Cornell, BU, Harvard, Yale, Syracuse, MIT, and Hamilton next week! I’m so excited to see Cornell!

You guys are lucky to live so close to New England colleges. I have to fly for eight hours to visit a school there.

@Marg532 yea I know I need to expect snow at my other schools but at least they’re all generally flat campuses. Cornell is beautiful but it would be too overwhelming for me as an undergrad. Three of the program councilors were current undergrads or went there for undergrad. Based on our conversations, I could tell that the school just isn’t right for me at the moment. Difficult to transfer between colleges, too far from home, not close to a major city, hard to travel to, no family nearby, etc. I’m from California so the only way to get to Ithaca is from a small plane from Philadelphia (or driving from Rochester). That turbulence was not fun to sit through…

@ski_racer the campus is so pretty! Also I would recommend taking an official tour at BU. The tour guides all seemed to be energetic and very professional. Lol my tour guide at Northeastern showed up in her pajamas and kept repeating “um I don’t know much about this place but I’ve heard it’s nice.”

I completely forgot to finish my application to HOME at John Hopkins and now I’m stressed that they ran out of travel grants because they have rolling admissions. Time to go write an essay.

@xxluvforeverxx I relate. The only reason I get to visit East Coast schools is because my grandparents live in Connecticut. Just a school visit wouldn’t be a big enough reason to deal with the hassle of getting out of Idaho.

@xxluvforeverxx samee but I dragged my dad to Boston over Spring break. Suprisingly, it’s only one or two connecting flights from where I live lol

Hey so is anyone not sending Subject Tesrs to colleges that recommend them? Harvard requires* two so I’m debating if my Literature score (650 / 53%) is strong enough. I may just cough up the money and retake it in October. I feel like it will be the easiest for me to study for since I will be taking AP Lit.
*required unless it’s a financial burden or you don’t want them to be considered. It’s a confusing policy

I’m mainly stressed about colleges of engineering. Strong scores in Bio and Math 2 would take me weeks of studying. I got a 5 in AP Calc and a 4 in APES so I don’t feel like it’s worth it to stress over these tests that I will have little time to study for, if any? Anyways I wish I knew about subject tests as a freshman. That would’ve made my life easier right now. Oh well.

Hey Guys.

@snowfairy137 Thanks for the advice. I already wrote Prompt A and am now in the process of shortening it as well as lengthing it specifically for my Questbridge bio essay.

Anyone have any tips on shortening essays?

So after 4 weeks at CMU, I have decided to not apply. It’s generally a good school, but I just haven’t had the best time. I honestly spent the first few days trying to find good friends. to hang out with. Those days kind of turned into weeks and I felt a little depressed because there was so much work to do and it became harder to find more friends. I was also hanging out with people I just didn’t click with so, after a few weeks I just stopped hanging out with them and started hanging out with a group of people I actually enjoyed being around. My math professor picked on me for the first few weeks and is finally starting to back off a bit. I like the TA much better. Honestly, the only things I’m really liking here in terms of classes is the Robotics project. It took me a few weeks, but I’m finally standing out to the teacher and we’re actually getting into more complex stuff. I’m getting him to write me a recommendation for other colleges. I actually just came back from a birthday dinner and it was easily one of the most fun times I’ve had hear.

I personally think the program’s really good, but has A LOT of things it could work on. More than half the people in my Pre-Calc class are failing and almost all the people in my Physics class are not going to apply. After my interview, I was told that it would be better to into Physics because I wanted to do undergrad research my freshman year and it’d be easier to get into given my states. Their mechanical engineering department is kind of weird and Robotics is a second major here that is a part of both CS and ME. The food isn’t the best either. But, their Robotics Institute is superb. I’m personally just going to use my positive experiences here and use them as app boosters and my negative experiences will serve as a reminder of what I don’t want to have happen when I go to college.

Y’all are right I live near Ithaca and the snow situation is ROUGH. It gets freezing and miserable for a good portion of the winter LOL

Common App comes out on Tuesday you guys! (Is it weird that I’m strangely excited?)

Idk honestly I just wish it was next year already I wanna leave

I feel the same @snowfairy137. I’m so anxious to get in to a great college and leave
