High School Class of 2018

@mbs12345 I’m going to the one on Monday. :frowning: I’ll be in Ithaca visiting Cornell on Saturday. Someone in my AP Physics class might be visiting on Saturday, though. I’m asking him tomorrow. Have fun! I can’t wait to visit campus.

@h0kulani I totally agree with all the previous posters. For the sake of humanity, keep doing what you’re doing. And on behalf of the male side of the species, I apologize. :))

Also, I unfortunately drop out of AP Physics C for AP Physics 1 because I found the class to be too fast paced and wasn’t doing too well. It was either stay or ruin my GPA. Calculus BC is going well though.

Admitted to UNM today, said they’d send my admission packet in the mail. I wonder if they notify Woodward and UNM Scholars earlier than Presidential/Regents (which is mid-February).

@CharlotteLetter Congrats!

Did UNM send a link to a portal or something where you can see if they have received test scores and transcripts? I received confirmation of my payment for my app and it says that it is completed. They sent me an email about the FAFSA opening which mentioned that they’ve received my application for admission. I didn’t get a formal email or anything though.

Also, how long ago did you apply?

@carmen00 There is no portal of that sort that I know of. I’m dual enrolled at UNM so I could see they got test scores and community college transcript, though.

I got the same email about the FAFSA opening once Admissions found my application (it had gotten stuck in their system), and I just got the admissions email today, which didn’t say much other than that I’d get the admissions packet and additional information. I applied Sept. 19th, although they didn’t have my application until the 27th due to it being stuck in the system.

BTW, does anyone know what ‘additional information’ includes for UNM? @sewin2music

I just found out that you can now put CAD files (3D models) in word and I’m a little more excited than I should be.

Congrats! @CharlotteLetter

I had my MIT interview today and I feel pretty good about it! My EC was really nice and we talked for about an hour! I wish I talked more about some of my main extracurriculars and more about my aspirations/dreams, but oh well! It is what it is! I’m glad that I got it over with though :slight_smile:

@CharlotteLetter They sent me a folder with my NetID to log into my UNM account/portal along with step-by-step instructions from acceptance to first day of college. The only essential part in the packet is the ID which gives you access to your lobomail and account info. I haven’t seen anything important in the portal yet, but I’m assuming later in the year they’ll more info.

@sewin2music OK, thanks! So yeah the instructions will be more useful for me, since they aren’t going to give me a new NetID (heck, they sent my acceptance to my UNM email even though I applied with personal). According to a Financial Aid representative, the in-state scholarship notifications (Woodward and UNM Scholars) go out earlier than Regents/Presidential, and as of two weeks ago they were already awarding almost all scholarships on a rolling basis. So I’m hoping to hear earlier than February - and maybe you guys will get Amigo before then…

Got some great news!

I’M ON THE FRONT PAGE OF ON ONE OF THE CARNEGIE MELLON’S NEWS STORY ABOUT SAMS!!! :smiley: :smiley:

Here’s the story: http://www.cmu.edu/news/stories/archives/2017/september/largest-sams-class.html
I’m the subject of the picture. What an honor!!!

So today, I taught my first programming class of about 12 middle-schoolers at VEX Robotics .I basically taught them about the fundamentals of the RobotC programming language. They were pretty rowdy, a few kids in general would not stop talking and making fart jokes, but I was able to get them through the material. They were talking a lot more than I wanted to, so I decided give them a pop quiz at the end. To my surprise, a good portion of them passed. Not surprising, the talkers got a lower grade, and those who didn’t, did really well. I was really impressed by this one kid’s performance and overall attitude. He got a near perfect score. I think he’ll go a long way. I think I’m going to ask the talkers, in private, to simply stop talking and making fart jokes. Anyway, I can’t wait to teach them about Robot Movement!

@ak2018 Congrats :slight_smile:

Homecoming today! I don’t have a college class today, so I’m going to the pep rally. Everyone except one person is skipping their college classes to go to the pep rally lol. I probably would too if I didn’t already have off. My school is probably gonna lose the football game tonight, but oh well. I’ll still enjoy it.

I’m dressed in navy blue and white from head to toe. I love homecoming. My school goes all out.

The dance is tomorrow night, and I’m super excited. It’s gonna be amazing, as per usual.

I was accepted to Arizona State yesterday! Although it’s my safety school and has a 80%+ acceptance rate, it is nice to know I finally made it into one 4-year school. And I qualify for a full tuition scholarship so that’s cool. The acceptance is giving me to motivation to finish my Harvard app this weekend.

@ak2018 Congrats! Good luck with those middle schoolers.

I’m so nervous to start doing applications! Any tips?

@Futureanimator at the risk of sounding like a nike ad… JUST DO IT.

Is anybody going to PEEP this weekend?

Yes.

I saw my retired favorite teacher today! I get access to VIP events at the Guggenheim because I’m staff there, and I asked her if she wanted to be my date for the night. We spent over three hours together touring the museum, and even though I’m the one who works there, I was still awed by how worldly and knowledgeable she is about everything, including art, even though she was my APUSH teacher. We took the train together and she was reassuring me about the college application process, but also about how little rejection means, which was helpful because I was so scared she’d be upset if/when I get rejected from my top choice. Her presence is just so comforting, and this evening made me feel completely at peace. She was a wonderful teacher, but she’s also such a beautiful person and I am incredibly grateful to know her. Even though her retirement was really hard on me, I am still convinced that she’s one of those people who’ve come into my life for a reason.

Also, I was called down to the college office and informed that I was commended by National Merit (which I knew) and that I was the only student in my school to be recognized by the competition (which I didn’t know). Maybe the fact that this recognition is rare within my school will make it look more impressive on my app, given the context? Don’t know, but maybe it’ll make the college office learn my name, so I guess it can’t be a bad thing.

Homecoming week is next week! At my school the senior prank is a big deal so we’re going all out every single day next week until Homcoming on Friday. That also means I’m getting zero sleep.

I’ve been panicking so much about my canceled ACT date, but universities are being so generous to me. For example, University of Miami is giving me a waived fee. 70 dollars saved!
