Hi Guys, just joining the conversation. Just accepted Early Decision at Wake Forest and filling out as many scholarship applications as possible… you all probably know the drill! Here’s wishing all good things to everyone out there!
I got into Salem State MA! It’s 14 hours away from home but It sure looks worth it!
@CharlotteLetter The Carnegie Mellon University Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) is a summer program for juniors in high school who are underrepresented minorities. I am actually an alum from this past summer
Speaking of SAMS, I need your help in advertising the program, as well as other programs like these, to high-achieving minorities in your schools and communities. The 2018 SAMS application has opened and it would mean a lot if you guys could tell these underclassmen about these programs. For those of who don’t know what SAMS is or want to tell your friends who fit their eligibility requirements, it’s a six-week program where you take different STEM classes such as programming, biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, etc. You do all of this while living in a dorm, making new friends, finding out what college is like, getting to know Pittsburgh, meeting successful professors, and much more. Since they are trying to make a diverse class, they accept students who have with a $100K+ income and 3.2 GPAs and $50K incomes with a $4.3 GPA and anything in between. This note differentiates SAMS from MITES. The acceptance rate for last year was about 10% (127/1031 was the predicted ratio) Since finishing SAMS a few months ago, these are the schools we have been accepted so far to and other stats:
14 of us matched to Questbridge schools
2 of us got into Stanford
1 of us got into Swarthmore
2 of us got into CalTech
2 of us got into MIT
2 of us got into Harvard
2 into Carnegie Mellon
1 into Yale
1 into Carleton
Again, if you guys have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Just finished Christmas shopping, hopefully all of my online purchases will get here on time! I plan on giving all of my friends their gifts on Friday (aka last day before break) and I need time to wrap everything! One of my friends got into Yale, so I got her a stuffed bulldog :))
I am now realizing that my safety/match schools may not have been the best choices for me, and as I’m feeling increasingly certain that Tulane deferred me, my top 2 choices seem out of reach. I know it’s stupidly late in the game to be realizing this, and there’s nothing I can do at this point anyway – my high school stopped accepting transcript request forms December 5th. I’m just kind of freaking out.
@ls2018 I feel that way too tbh, I think I’m going to get deferred from Case Western Reserve and Villanova. It’s weird that your school stops accepting requests after December 5th, though. There are a lot of people at my school who haven’t even applied yet!
Maybe @ls2018’s school allows requests after they reopen in Jan?
@is2018 I agree with above comments. There are a lot of students that don’t even apply to colleges until second semester, so how could your high school completely stop sending transcripts altogether? A lot of scholarship applications happen in second semester and those require them also. Maybe that cutoff was just ‘those that needed to be sent out prior to holiday break?’ Hopefully that is the case.
I hope it all works out in your favor. I know so many people that did not get into their top schools - any of them - yet found the perfect place where they least expected it. Be positive and I hope it all worlks out.
@is2018 You need to advocate for yourself and make sure your school is helping you get into the right college. You should apply to more schools if you want to. Many schools need to see your 1st semester grades before making a decision so your HS will have to send another round anyway. Best of luck!!
PS My daughter is also feeling very pessimistic. Have faith that all will work out in the end. And if not this Fall, you can always transfer!!
Should I apply to more schools? I was accepted by Ohio State, rejected from Stanford. Applying to/waiting on Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Gtech (might withdraw though), and UMich. Intended major is computer science, but I am not certain that I will even stay in STEM so a really Tech-y school isn’t gonna work. I am really just looking for a version of Michigan with the same selectivity, academic prestige, medium or large size, and warmer climate. UW GPA is >3.95, ACT is 36, see my other posts for more about me if you want to help out. I’m just worried about not getting into any of my california schools, which would be my top choice.
@Cof22mom @Southern5062 @CharlotteLetter Thanks for the advice, everyone! I’m feeling a lot better today and your comments definitely helped. I’m going to get in touch with my counselor and see if we can talk about other options after winter break. Until then, going to try to stay positive!
@MNgurl101 Yeah, it’s not a great feeling but I guess we just have to stay positive. Wishing you the best of luck with Case Western and Villanova!
Haven’t been here in forever, but I just found out I was accepted to my top choice university, Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a scholarship that would make it affordable! So excited!!
Also got deferred from MIT but idc bc it wasn’t my top choice anyway and there’s no way I could afford it… not sure why I applied.
Got a B+ and a B in my college classes. Never felt this good with a B lol. I’m trying to create the perfect schedule for next semester, so we’ll see how that works.
One of my friends just got rejected from Notre Dame, but honestly, it wasn’t a great fit for him anyway. He’s waiting to hear from CWRU and Villanova this week. Hopefully it all works out!
I can’t wait for regular decisions to come out because those are my more selective schools. It’s crazy that we have to wait so long!
It’s been some time since I posted, but I got into Harvard! I have yet to receive my physical acceptance letter so it still doesn’t feel real. I cried. A lot.
Congrats to everyone on the acceptances! And to those who were deferred or rejected, keep working hard!
Admitted to SUNY Albany today! Still waiting to hear from my top choice…sigh
Got deferred for Fordham. Withdrew my application this morning since I applied on a whim and have no intention of going to the school, so I didn’t want to put in the unnecessary effort.
I was honestly surprised to get deferred from Fordham. I thought I was going to get in. Because of that I took Cornell and Princeton off my list, leaving MIT, Caltech, and Dartmouth as my reach schools (depth rather than breadth) and I’m adding one or two more safeties (Arizona and maybe another). Trying to give myself options and (kinda) the best chance of getting into one of my reaches.
Waiting on Case Western for tomorrow. Kinda hopeful I’ll get in since my mom and I got a lot of emails from the financial aid department asking for more information, but that doesn’t really mean anything. I just hope I don’t get deferred.
@frazzledazzle Hope it works out for you. Those are all super competitive schools! You’ll be great wherever you end up.
@snowfairy137 That’s great that you got into your top choice. Congratulations!
Got deferred from Case today
looking at the Case EA thread it looks like they deferred a lot of really strong applicants though. My first semester grades are looking good so fingers crossed for RD.
