@writergirl0316 I LOVE that quote!! Basically none of the seniors at my school do senior quotes but people are really big on senior pics lol. There are a few major people in each grade that take great pictures of the seniors. I’m a photographer so I take the pictures, and I love the creative vibes from the pics.
I’d really like some feedback on what to do because I kind of have a situation.
One of my closest friends (my best friend), is really upset because of a series of events that went down today. While we were taking a test for a class, her phone started ringing. It was on speaker and her phone was put on the desk, screen down at the edge of her desk. She always places her phone there, it’s a habit and the teacher never made any comments about it. The thing is, when her phone rang, the teacher got really angry and made her unlock her phone in the middle of the test- IN FRONT OF EVERYONE - and scrolled through her phone and it’s history. She obviously didn’t find anything because my friend has the highest integrity of anyone she’s ever known. I’m 100% sure what the teacher did is illegal and I want to encourage her to report the teacher because this isn’t the first time the teacher has pulled a stunt like this. Even IF she was cheating - which she wasn’t- the teacher had not right to go through her phone. She was so upset and I felt so bad. The biggest joke is that the two people sitting next to her WERE USING THEIR PHONES. I know this because I sit two chairs to her right and finished early so I saw them using their phones when I went to the bathroom after the test was over. The thing is, I wouldn’t mind as much of this is the first time the teacher has done this to her but it isn’t. After spending A YEAR in Florida, the teacher came back And all she does it complain about her ex-husband and how he left her. It’s very annoying. Anyways, this teacher is the head coach of DECA and absolutely dedicates her life to this club, and when my friend joined she was super sweet and nice to her. But, my friend had to quit because the prices of the club were over 300$ and she couldn’t afford it especially since they didn’t offer her any financial help, even after she asked. After she quit the club, the change in the teachers attitude was obvious and she become cold and dismissive towards my friend basically putting her down or ignoring her raised hand in class. She even docks her for the most ridiculous things. For example, we were doing presentations together (me and her). I got a 10/10 and she got a 8/10. The reason? Because we had a late start when presenting. THIS MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. I started the same time she did because were in the same group and I GOT A PERFECT SCORE. the teacher was even in the classroom because she was taking about deca with students outside.
I’ve known my friend for 11+ years. She’s so sweet and kind. She’s always dreamed of going to Columbia University (we plan on going together lol) but this teacher is absolutely dragging her grade down with the most bizarre excuses to take points of her assignments.
I’m so angry she’s putting friend though this. It really breaks my heart and I want to do something about it. Can anyone provide feedback?
@MangoLover11223 Have her parents complain to the administration. Parents run everything. Nobody is going to take students seriously.
@MangoLover11223 @kassh4 is right. Getting a parent involved works quite well.
Also, I have been officially selected to give a speech as a keynote speaker at my county’s Student Leadership conference on March 12th at George Mason University! I will also be giving my minorities and high schools students in STEM presentation as an unofficial TED-talk! My principal as well as a few of our community’s most prominent leaders and activists will be there. News has traveled fast and now a lot of my classmates have congratulated me. So excited!
@MangoLover11223 Unfortunately, if your school prohibits the use of cell phones and has stated that they’re allowed to go through its contents in some waiver you had to sign (they do this at my school), you cannot do anything about it. Teachers sometimes treat students unfairly and even parents can’t do anything about that. Say, her parents complained and it got all the way to the school board. The school board will most likely give them the cold shoulder and the case will simply be dismissed.
But if there was NO waiver, make a ruckus out of the incident. Complain, complain, complain. Start with school administration and if they won’t do anything, go to the district board. Pull the lawsuit card if you have to. Schools get really afraid when parents threaten with lawsuits. The teacher has breached her privacy and they were not given a warrant to search your friend’s phone. THIS IS ILLEGAL. Good luck!
@ak2018 Congratulations! That sounds really cool!! You deserved it
I finally finished applying for the Ronald Reagan Foundation Scholarship and the Ron Brown Scholarship. I wish I had the discipline to actually complete these essays earlier because once I start them I don’t struggle with finishing them. Procrastination really kills.
@Iridescentgaze I was going to submit both tomorrow and have written the essay (meaning they are recycled :)) ) Procrastination does kill!
@averagebean Thanks. I’m also going to be doing it in front of 1000 students from all over the county as well.
So, weird topic but it is related to college. I have always wanted to study abroad in London. Literally I wanted to go there since I was 7. But I was just thinking about going to Dublin instead. Not sure where this came from, but I kind of like this idea. I’m also hoping I can fit in some time (and an internship) in LA, but we’ll see.
Are you guys looking to study abroad anywhere in college?
@carmen00 I’m looking to get my graduate degree from Cambridge, Oxford, Swedish KTH, or L’École Polytechnique, although if I get funded into a top US grad school I will probably stay in the US.
@carmen00 I plan on studying abroad somewhere in my undergrad, and then possibly doing grad school in Europe as well. My plan is to be a global advocate/activist, so it totally makes sense!
@carmen00 I applied to McGill for music and, like @CharlotteLetter, am looking into schools like Cambridge and ETH Zurich for graduate school. I am mainly looking at schools in the US as of right now, though, but we’ll see as I get closer to having to make that decision.
@carmen00 I would love to study abroad somewhere in the United Kingdom. I love visiting museums and historical sites, and there’s so much more history there than in America. I know that’s kind of a superficial reason though, and ultimately, it depends on the cost. I know some of my schools claim spending a semester abroad would cost the same as staying on campus, but I’m not entirely sure how that works. Besides, if I could choose between studying abroad or getting an additional internship, it would probably make more sense to go with the internship.
Some of you already are already looking for grad schools? I have no idea what my post-undergrad plans are right now. orz
I had my first college interview today. At first, I felt it went okay, but now I keep on replaying all of my cringy answers in my head. I have another on Saturday, though, so at least I have an idea of what to expect.
@LeopardFire The cost is definitely going to be an issue for me. I feel like I can only really justify it if I get an internship in the place where I study.
I’m definitely not gonna go to grad school (no need to in PR!) but one of my friends knows the exact med school he wants to apply to and is already nervous about the MCAT. It’s crazy.
I have a snow day tomorrow! NYC public schools had to go back right after New Year’s Day, which sucks, but Mother Nature’s helping to extend our break. I was supposed to have an AP Macro quiz, even though we had an exam yesterday, so I am especially grateful.
I’m going to a college that has a super cool “study abroad” program for STEM students where people go and do projects abroad (and gave everyone in the class of 2022 a $5000 dollar scholarship for it) so I’m definitely doing that. I wanted to go to spain but they dont have a peoject center in spain so probably latin america (but europe or literally anywhere would be cool)
@writergirl0316 I have a snow day tomorrow, too! And I think my school will have a delay on Friday. My school went back on the 2nd as well. Perfect way to celebrate my birthday! My mom, sister, and I are going to record my music portfolios and register me to vote before the snow starts around 10.
@writergirl0316 @frazzledazzle My school is notorious for never having snow days. We might get one on Friday though because it might be too cold for our busses to start because they’re diesel.
@writergirl0316 @Marg532 @frazzledazzle last year we had the Snowpocalypse in the West and my district had 5 snow days in a row and it was crazy
No school today! Woo! My school district is always really late with letting us know. Even in severe weather, they rarely let us know the night before. I’m wondering if we’re also gonna have off tomorrow due to wind chill. Right now the wind chill is -14 but it still feels like 10. It’s gonna drop to 7 tomorrow morning, so it seems like I might have two days off.
I’m planning on having school tomorrow, since I’ve been in the NYCDOE for thirteen years and I don’t think they’ve closed due to temperatures once, but I also have my Harvard interview after school! It’s going to be a cold commute there, especially since the place I wait for the train is outdoors and I have to walk to my interviewer’s office.
This is my also first interviewer whose academic interests don’t match mine – Yale/Brown/Georgetown/Vassar were all English/history/poli sci/IR grads, but Harvard’s a radiologist. Should be interesting…
