High School Class of 2018

Guys literally my worst nightmare has happened. As a senior and an athlete, this year was supposed to be the best. I’m big and strong, and I was looking forward to skiing 80 days this season and making my way to 10 different resorts. The season is still just beginning, and now I’m injured. I have a herniated disc, which usually happens to people over 40. I’m so mad. This was my last chance to do my favorite thing, and now I can’t.

@ski_racer I’m really sorry that that happened to you. It’s going to be hard, but you can make it. Things always work out in the end. Just…be strong. You’ll be okay.

My school gave us a snow day tomorrow! So pumped! I have all day tomorrow to work on scholarship applications, plus all weekend, which I really need :))

I hope I have a snow day tomorrow. Looking at the weather it’s still going to be snowing throughout the day tomorrow, so I hope my district’s superintendent cancels. I have a math test I don’t want to take, and I would like the entire day to finish my Dartmouth supplements before the deadline tomorrow night.

Also, today’s my 18th birthday! Despite the blizzard it’s been a good day. I registered to vote this morning, had a formal breakfast with my family, and took a nice nap this afternoon.

I submitted my Caltech application last night! It felt surreal and a little unreal afterwards since I had been dreaming of applying to Caltech since the end of freshman year and I finally did it. I didn’t think that day would come and then it did. I’m really happy I applied there and, despite most likely not getting in because of my GPA, SAT, and ACT, I’m looking forward to results day.

Guys, I need some input. If my GPA is a 3.65 out of a 4.0 scale or a 91.33 out of a 100, then what is my gpa out of a 5.0 scale? Many people here seem to post their gpas out of 5.0 scale.

@futurecollege521 Does your school weight honors or AP courses?

School called a two hour delay for tomorrow. Considering every other school has off, it’s ridiculous. They’re probably going to call at 5:30 in the morning tomorrow to switch it to no school. There’s a two degree difference from normal to delay time, and when the wind chill takes you to around -10, the difference isn’t gonna bring us up to bearable temperatures.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I think I will go to the school superintendent, because our school counselors don’t do much especially since college season is so close.
@ski_racer I’m really sorry for that :slightly_frowning_face: I hope it gets better
Good luck to everyone who has an interview coming up!! Make sure to tell us how it goes

Yea, they do. Since my grades are out of a 100, for every AP class, they multiply my AP class grade by 1.1.

Annoyed because my school only cancels class when it is -15 or -22 wind chill so we can be freezing and sliding around on the sidewalk and still having to go to school. Didn’t get any snow days last year and more than once I have fallen down and badly bruised myself because of ice while walking to school (district doesn’t do buses). Hoping to get a “cold day” soon though, especially since robotics is starting and I’ll want to sleep in.

Y’all are cute. My school doesn’t cancel until it hits -50 degrees Fahrenheit windchill.

@MNgurl101 dude that’s frostbite-level cold whaaaaaaaaat

@18college1111 yeah they cancel “when one can get frostbite in under 5 minutes”

@MNgurl101 I’m assuming everyone either gets on the bus or drives to school? Everyone within 2 miles of my school doesn’t get bussing so if you can get frostbite within 30 minutes we usually cancel. Usually.

@carmen00 everyone outside of a half mile gets bussed bc there aren’t a lot of sidewalks in my town. Idk about the kids within that half mile, there aren’t many and they probably assume that parents will drive if it’s really cold. Also they allow parents to keep their kids home if the parents deem weather conditions too dangerous.

Anyone here know of any literature/English competitions? I’ve entered a few, and I asked my counselor if he knew any, but he didn’t. I’ve browsed through google too but couldn’t be find anything outside of the really big ones like the scholastic art and writing, etc.
any feedback is appreciated!

@MangoLover11223 Not really sure but you can try looking up state-wide or county-wide ones? Maybe you’ll be able to find smaller competitions there.

Also, my school didn’t cancel today. If it takes 20 mins to walk a mile, it takes 40 to walk two miles to the school, not including the giant hill my school sits on. So if you walk to school, you can easily get frostbite by the time you get there.

Our new superintendent is ridiculous. And at my school, you’re not allowed to send in a note saying “the weather conditions were too bad so my child did not attend.” Like, how is this right? Many kids walk to school and subjecting them to this weather is putting their health in danger. EVERY other school near us has off. Except us. There’s nothing to brag about there.

If you’re gonna make kids walk to school, look out for their health. You shouldn’t be proud of not having another snow day when you put kids’ health in danger.

@MangoLover11223 My English teacher from last year compiled a great list of writing competitions and magazines. It lists Claremont Review for having a January deadline, and 2nd Annual NEATE Writing Contest for Students, Aerie International Journal, and The Sierra Nevada Review for February. There’s more for later months, I can PM you a bigger list if you want.

I’m lucky enough to have snow day two days in a row. Combined with Monday being a holiday and my college interview on Wednesday, I only had school on Tuesday! I basically had two weeks of break. :stuck_out_tongue:

The last week was a grind but I finally finished the applications for MassTech, Pennsylvania, The Johns, Leland Jr., William Marsh, and Mellon University.
