High School Class of 2019

How do people study for math? Like, you really cannot memorize facts idk

Practice, like, everything. And then some.

^ we have a textbook, so I read all the explanations in that too

Lol @CharlotteLetter, aren’t you like, a bajillion math courses ahead of everyone?

@IrrationalPepsi Well, many students and profs at my uni have surpassed me :stuck_out_tongue: But studying is important regardless

cries got a 98.3% on a test
sobs I deserve the remaining 1.7%

@IrrationalPepsi that means they’re very good at practicing

I try to derive things so they’re intuitive

@CharlotteLetter I know that feeling. It you get a lower A and/or missed two
to three you’re like ‘oh thank god,’ but if it’s only one you feel indignant af

@OMPursuit Well I hate anything sub-perfect but yeah… (should get back to diff eqs homework, oops)

ughhh waking up at 5. just bad high school student things.

I accidentally accused my teacher of giving out answers D:

sh*t

@OMPursuit howww?

there was a biology test on protein synthesis, and there was an optional review session on Tuesday morning

I stayed out so I could eat breakfast (not allowed in the Bio lab), but still felt really prepared for the test

I went in and took it, and they had these open response problems. One asked for two reasons why ribosomes can’t read DNA

I answered 1) that ribosomes can’t pass through the nuclear envelope (too big), and 2) even if they could, they’re not set up to read thymine (they’d be looking for uracil) and wouldn’t find any initiation codons.

She removed a point, because I didn’t say also (for my second answer) that DNA is too big to pass through the envelope. I told her the question didn’t suggest she wanted two similar and specific answers, and that I’ve heard from people in the prep session she told them to remember those facts specifically for the test. She got mad that I suggested she gave out answers, and I apologized before just walkin’ out

She’s been very nice to me this year and is one of my favorite teachers, so I’m sad :<

So you got mad over a point/ a question?

… >.>’
Erm, what @CharlotteLetter said was spot-on. Near-perfects make me fester

It was more that I answered it correctly and she took off points than the points taken off- a principle sort of thing. Plus, if she did the same thing for a weaker student in that class, it might be a big deal.

I’ve missed plenty of points in the past, and am past the point (heh) of freaking out about it each time

@OMPursuit hehe, protein synthesis… don’t remind me of physiology! Sorry… I’m doing bio in summer. Hopefully your teacher won’t remain mad…

And I agree on the ‘I answered correctly… a principle’… same way with my test (sighs)

Currently watching Bad Girls Club LOL

Not doing precalc over summer for acceleration, which kinda makes me sad.
My mom wants me to take precalc just cuz, and that too she wants me to take a full course, so why not try to skip it in school if I am taking (and paying for) a full year of precalc? Idek, but I feel like by pushing myself into an unpopular situation (sophomore in calc bc), I’ll get more of a motivation to work hard for grades.

Another unrelated note: just got a snapchat, you can add me if you want. Username is “LeKobe Jordan III”

nvm, that was my name. username is vivekthefirst

@neophite That’s cool, yo. Calculus is already a huge jump, and you’re already ahead as-is. XD

I get that feeling, though (I went all out this year and found it does help motivate), and had a similar problem with precalc. Conveniently the nearby CC had trig/analytical geo for the fall semester, so I’ll get to do Calc I in the spring.
Mebbe you could try something like that?

Possibly- the only problem with your suggestion is the nearest CC is ~30 mins away and I wouldn’t have a ride. Another reason was that junior year, I’m planning on taking APUSH, AP English Lang, AP Chem, AP Physics 1, and AP Calc BC (unless I can move it down a year). I don’t think I could handle that much work, even though the classes all have great experiences to offer. Yeah, I could take regular classes, but they aren’t as fulfilling as the APs in terms of material covered.

Thanks for the advice though!

Good luck, @neophite ! That’s pretty intense. I hope it all works out!
If it’s any help, though, I can’t get to the CC during the school day either. I’ll be taking classes twice a week (soo weird) from 6:30 to 7:15 PM or something. The schedule of a college or university tends to be considerably more flexible than that of a high school!
