High School Class of 2019

So, I managed to stop cursing (in English, at least) in the space of about a week by counting how many times a day I swore and trying to lower the number every day. It worked super well (I’m almost 4 weeks clean, y’all :)) ) so I’m trying the same thing with procrastination. I was going to start yesterday, but I decided to put it off until today and I’m at 15 but I have been SO PRODUCTIVE and it feels amazing

My school doesn’t have AP euro or world history, which is a bummer because I otherwise would take them. I’m taking apush right now and love it, so I will probably take AP gov next year.

In senior year, should I take AP stats or calculus AB? It may seem far away but we will be selecting courses soon and I want to plan accordingly. I suppose I could take both, but it would be really difficult fitting it into my schedule. Statistics is taught by an easier teacher at my school and could be considered more practical and useful in real life situations. It’s only a semester, while calc is a full year. Is calc AB really hard, for those of you who have taken it or heard about it?

I should also add that I am in Algebra II right now and counting down the days until the semester ends. The teacher is absolutely terrible, and has really made me hate math. It’s a shame how one teacher can change your entire outlook on a particular subject.

oh and on the topic of SAT subject tests, I might take the U.S. History one, as it is offered on a day right after I will be taking the apush exam, so it would still be fresh in my mind.

From what I’ve heard, AP Calc is only for those who really like the subject. It’s a solid 1-2 hours a night, no breaks. If you are a math person in general, you should be good as long as you have the time. Just make sure it’s a good teacher that teaches it.

Also don’t just take my word for it, it might be different at your school, try to find someone who takes those classes and see what they have to say.

Personally I’d take AP Stats, because it’s very useful in almost any field- but that’s also because I really hate math.

I’ve had (and am still having) lots of fun with calculus, so I recommend that…
but if you don’t like algebra 2, Calc AB is going to be harder both conceptually and technically.
I think you should reconsider after taking precalculus! @shaneyboy123

Just attended and competed at my first science olympiad! :)) Im sure we didn’t place but we had so much fun!!!

man i wish i lived in cali or something where there are cheaper residential programs for summer research stuff… texas only has ut austin research academy… im trying to find places to go during the summer but I cant seem to find cheap options. do colleges really care if you went to a research academy if you spend $3000 to go?

I just turned in my papers and I am officially an IB kid!

Hey guys, quick question: Does the amount of points that an assignment is out of affect your grade any differently? For example, is a 5/10 weighted any differently from a 50/100? I thought it didn’t matter, but I’ve had certain assignments (in the same category too) that are out of lower points but barely affect my grade even with a pretty low %…

Typically, for me, assignments with lower point values carry less weight and therefore would have a lesser impact on average
But ik, in my schools grade book anyway, you can set it so all assignments have the same weight

@shaneyboy123 what we have is that the entire grade is calculated as one fraction. For example, two assignments: a 30/40 and 1/10 would turn to a 31/50, or 62%, but a 4/40 and 7.5/10 would turn to a 11.5/50, or 23%. By doing this, a zero on a test is worth more than a zero on a homework assignment.

My school uses cumulative grading like @kimclan1 's, but on a weighted average. A course may be 10% written/verbal communication, 10% collaboration, and 80% content, or something along those lines.

What’s killer is when you ace a difficult written communication assignment and get a 4/5 on a pop-quiz for content points. :stuck_out_tongue:

@northeastgirl24 @kimclan1 @OMPursuit Thanks guys, taking a second look and I’m thinking my school does the same.

Soo, I’m asking a professor for a recommendation and it’s freaking me out. On the other hand, I feel increasingly ready for the AMC and NACLO.
Maybe I’ll make invitationals…? p.p

On the other other hand, my local university decided not to host NACLO less than a week before the contest date. Maybe my school will do it…?

I got my report card. It’s (thankfully) pretty good. I’m not sure how I did it, but this semester should be easier.

My research is finally kicking into gear, which is exciting. Who knew animal husbandry had such applications in computer science?

The drama club is also buckling down on writing the school play. Looks like another drama, set in a high school… go figure.

We’re reading ‘Things Fall Apart’ in class. It’s not a tough read, but it is tough to read. I like it.

Finally, show-choir-competition-season is starting. I had to get my luscious mane of hair clipped for the sake of m’dancing, but that’s alright! Short isn’t a terrible look for me.
Time to work on my repertoire. We’re doing ‘Higher Love’ and other old songs that are all very soapy and fun.

How’s life with y’all?

finals next week - who else obsessively calculated the exact grade they need on the final to get an A in a class?

the 2 classes i’m at risk of getting a B of are chemistry and alg 2, need an 86% on my chem final and an 87.5% on my alg 2 final

oh, meme! I did that :stuck_out_tongue: @literallyliteral
Finals already happened for me tho
I managed to far overshoot my goal for my calc final, which was nice, but I rushed my final essay for film lit.
Oh, well, one B+ won’t kill me.

@OMPursuit We read Things Fall Apart a couple months ago. It was okay, not very interesting.

Doing pretty well over here! School just started up and midterms/preliminaries are coming up in a few weeks so my fingers are crossed for that! Economics is going especially well this semester (surprisingly) and I hope to catch up with some Chemistry revision over the weekend, since I do need a pretty high grade on the midterm to get an A* (our school’s equivalent to a US A+? I don’t know, lol).

@literallyliteral I do that all the time! It helps me manage my time between subjects a lot more efficiently (or I’m just lazy, who knows).

I also found a few summer programs that may work for my weird ‘commuting international student’ situation, so that’s going well too!

Hi guys, new here  I searched everywhere for a sophomore thread but I guess I don’t really know how to navigate CC yet haha!

Hi!! @taehyung you’ll get the hang of it soon :stuck_out_tongue:
