I have finals this week and I’ve been studying like crazy. Between memorizing 400 years of American history, all the literary works we’ve read, and all this math with an absolutely terrible “teacher”, I’ve been pretty busy. Really worried about math but next semester will be much more interesting and probably less of a workload so that’s good
guys do you have any advice on finding summer research programs as a 15 year old? i started school early but i regret it as all programs i seem to find are 16+…
i did find one program but i heard its pretty competitve, so does this seem like a good background as a soph?
psat: 1430, perfect on math
school rank 2/997
scioly captain
mu alpha theta (math nhs) PR officer
science bowl captain
volunteer at local cancer center
started shoe-drive near local
AIME qualifier
AMC 10 school top score
Scioly medals
Scholastic Art gold key
more local art awards
also, is anyone prepping for usabo?..
@GeometryForLife I studying for USABO. I know there’s not a lot of time left, but I’m trying to do the best I can. Besides reading Campbell’s, I’ve been using Khan Academy and I want to look at many of the links they give you on the website for USABO. Do you have any study tips?
Tomorrow I’m preforming in a judged improv performance hosted by the theatre I take my acting classes at! I’m kind of nervous but I really love improv and my teacher says I’m great at it so I’m pretty excited
I’m also debating on entering National History Day, but I’m just not feeling motivated enough for it right now, which sucks.
I’m also trying to sort out what programs I’m going to do over the summer - it’s hard narrowing them down lol.
My schedule will most likely be(havent submitted apps yet)
AP Lang
AP Physics 1
AP Comp sci A
Honors Precalc
Honors Us history
Spanish 4
Advanced Marketing
Was really on the edge between honors US and APUSH, but think I will take honors because im not interested in u.s history at all. I found ap world to be interesting but have a B rn so don’t feel like I would do any better in APUSH. Colleges seem to be wanting “the most rigorous courses possible” so don’t know how much not taking higher levels of history will affect me.
Don’t really like spanish but don’t hate it either. I hear there’s a language taking requirement at lots of colleges and I can bypass it by taking the spanish sat and getting over 700 so hopefully I might be prepared enough at the end of spanish 3 for that.
@TimexRosegold colleges want both rigor but they look for passion. don’t take a class if you don’t like it and don’t have to! Now taking several years of Spanish looks really good for colleges and you’ll probably test out of the language requirement if you take the AP exam for Spanish.
@Kastelano Have you considered majoring in Political Science instead or perhaps doing a double major of PoliSci and IR?
What classes are you guys thinking of doing next year?
I’m thinking that I might do the IB program.
Junior:
Theory of Knowledge
IB English HL
IB History HL
IB Chemistry SL
IB Psychology SL
H Spanish 4
Aerospace Engineering
+
DE Multivariable Calc/Differential Equations
AP Art History (online)
Senior:
Theory of Knowledge
IB English HL
IB History HL
IB Physics SL or IB Sociology and Cultural Anthropology SL
IB Spanish
Engineering Design and Deveolopment
PE/Chorus (requirements)
+
DE Linear Algebra
DE Economics (maybe)
I would also have to write up an IA and take the test for IB Math HL senior year.
I’m really unsure right now because this schedule would be a lot of work and I am also captain of debate team and I’m in It’s Academic, both of which require a lot of time outside of school.
But I also feel like this schedule would actually take less time than a full AP schedule would since assignments are given weeks in advance and there is less busy work and more analysis. I also feel like IB would make my writing skills improve the most.
I used to really want to be a doctor or an engineer, but this year, I’ve started like math less and less and I have become really interested in politics and now I really want to major in PoliSci, but I am still really conflicted and confused on what I want to do.
Sorry for the rant, I just really don’t know what to do.
Here’s one possible schedule for me:
Junior:
YEAR ROUND:
DE English 111/131 (composition)
DE Honors multivariable calc/linear algebra (it’s really honors calc 3 and 4, but the first semester
goes through lin algebra pretty thoroughly and then green’s theorem and all that is covered in
the spring)
Government (my last graduation requirement :P)
FALL SEMESTER:
DE Honors physics OR honors chem
DE (honors? lol) Spanish OR some other language
SPRING SEMESTER:
DE Math in cognitive science (this goes into neural networks and some other cool stuff, aligns
with my research)
DE Drawing/illustration or something maybe because I want an art class D:
my school doesn’t offer any AP or IB classes, so I’m just doing dual-enrollment at IU-B.
that works out well because their math department is super sweet and the campus is pretty and I don’t have to get a ride to clubs there
in the meantime I’m doing show choir which is actually a hella tough sport
next year I’ll (hopefully) be taken off the stand-in list and get to compete in every song
for now I"m content doing the ones I’m really good at and trying for a solo
@IAmNotCreativ You do seem to have the academic clout to back up pursuing the humanities. Go for it! However, pls don’t stop liking math (there are so few of us already).
I’m pretty sure I want to me a math major now which is nice because I didn’t know that before :0
as for the future I’ll probably sell out and become a terrible software engineer and make horrible software
apropos of nothing, any of you take the NACLO today? I’m pretty sure I got ~65, so I might have a real shot at invitationals
right now, junior schedule wise i’m thinking something like…
AP Lang
AP USH
AP Euro
Honors Latin III
Honors French V
Pre-Calculus
Physics – my school offers AP physics 1 but not honors physics, so like I would take honors but idrk about AP bc I’m not physics’ biggest fan tbh so I’ll see ig
@IAmNotCreativ I can totally relate re: suddenly getting really into the humanities ugh it honestly just
depends on my mood at this point haha
@IAmNotCreativ sorry, but I am not very familiar with the IB program.
@northeastgirl24 wow! Taking AP Euro and APUSH at the same time may he brutal because of the amount of reading needed for each.
My schedule for junior year:
AP English Language
Spanish 4H
Precalculus H
AP Statistics
AP Physics 2
APUSH
@IAmNotCreativ I’m doing the IB program next year too! From what I’ve heard, the IB isn’t any less harder than a full-AP schedule, although I’ve heard great things about improved writing too!
Are SL subjects a one-year thing at your school? If so, you might want to opt for HL Physics/Chemistry instead of both at SL, since you won’t get college credit at most schools for SL and completing a two-year SL course in one year sounds pretty harsh compared to doing a HL course in its intended timeframe. Just my two cents though!
As someone who enjoys both STEM and humanities, I would suggest you to take courses that you’re interested in and let your passions lead the way! (That sounds overly idealistic, but that’s what I pretty much do)
My possible junior year schedule:
IB Math HL
IB Further Math HL
IB English SL
IB Physics HL
IB Economics/Chemistry SL
and a foreign language I haven’t chosen yet. Probably will do Spanish/Mandarin but we’ll see!
Anyone in the full IB program in here?
4/5 finals done lol. There’s about a 1% chance I come out of this semester with straight As - I basically failed my Chem and Alg 2 finals.
Let’s see… my junior schedule will probably look as follows:
AP English Lang
AP Seminar
AP Calc BC
AP Physics 1/ Physics honors (school isn’t sure if they’ll offer ap or not next year)
US History honors
Choir
Woodshop 2
I’m dropping orchestra next year unfortunately… I’ve had some problems with my teacher this year and I’m not going to torture myself by having to deal with her again next year. I’m hoping to get into an advanced choir next year too! I’m only in beginning now, but I think I have a chance.
Somewhat going to be my schedule next year:
IB English HL
IB Biology HL
IB World Religons/IB Film/IB Theatre???
IB Theory of Knowledge
French III Honors
IB Math Studies/ Precalculus Honors??
IB History of the Americas HL
Anatomy & Physiology Honors/AP Psychology/idk
We haven’t talked about scheduling yet with our IB coordinator so I don’t have a set schedule.
Oh, wow. So I think this summer I will be taking AP Bio and Precalculus, as well as a course on EdX to learn MATLAB. But my actual class lineup for junior year is as follows (hopefully, as long as everything works out
Sorry, when I tried to post this before, it cut off my actual list of classes. Here it is:
English 3 (British Literature)
Spanish 3 (I want to take AP test in the spring)
AP Physics 1
AP Calc BC
Government (non-AP)
Economics (also non-AP)
AP Stats
Linear Algebra (1 semester)
PE (1 semester too, but still, ugh)
Also, do you guys know is SL Economics or AP Stats are usually taught in 1 semester (each, I mean). Thanks!
Advice needed! I think I failed a geometry quiz I just took! Should I go talk to the teacher if I can make it up? Because I have low vision, and even though she gave me large print, I still read the questions wrong! I know she knows I know how to do it cause I got 100% on classwork.
The same thing happened two weeks ago with a Spanish test. Even though it was in large print, I read the directions wrong and did 5 questions completely wrong. She let me redo it (came up to me a day after the test) because she knew I just read the section wrong. What should I do?
If you think the teacher would, asking to retake it or for extra credit couldn’t hurt I suppose @equationlover
The worst they can do is say no, after all
