High School Class of 2019

I think I’ll be working on a research project at my local uni this year (it’s a little scary because i’ll have to readjust to a new lab!) and learn a little programming and a little Japanese.

A lot of you are super keen on doing research, wow! How did you all find these opportunities? Do you all happen to live near a research lab/university?

Really just want a summer job this year. Aching for my own money.

@VaporeonKid well my school advertises these things so I found some of them through there. Also I live Raleigh, NC which is apart of the “Research Triangle”,which involves Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. So research universities like NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, and Duke are just a few miles away from me.

My town is host to a research uni. I asked a graduate student friend doing interesting stuff, and he put me in touch with his advisor! @VaporeonKid

@adiacs @OMPursuit you’re both super lucky! The closest research university is about an hour’s drive from where I live and they aren’t exactly open to high school students coming in and doing research, let alone foreign high school sophomores like me!

This Valentine’s Day, may you all find love! May you find it, wherever it has been hiding from you!

May you find whoever has been hiding it from you, and exact revenge upon them.

I’d been having a pretty downer day today because I did something weird to my back and my doctor told me I had to sit out rowing until it was better…however, when I got home, I found that my region had finally posted the results for the Scholastic Awards.

I won a gold key in poetry and an honorable mention in dramatic script! I’m super happy tbh.

@aesthetes, nice!!

Congrats @aesthetes!

On the topic of Scholastic Art, do any of you know similar competitions/programs that are open to internationals?

@Mathophile26 thank you!

@VaporeonKid thank you! Unfortunately, I don’t know of any similar programs open to international students.

Hey so I just discovered this thread but I would like to know your thoughts for my junior year schedule.
AP lang
APUSH
AP Calc AB (side note: my school doesn’t allow us to take BC straight after precalc so I was thinking of self-studying for BC whilst taking AB)
AP chem
French 4
Human physiology
Art /AP Psych/ AP physics 2 (depends on what periods their offered so they don’t conflict with my other classes)
** I was thinking of taking AP physics c mechanics and e&m online since my school doesn’t offer that class and I want to pursue physics in college. Should I do it, or is it too much and I should do any of you guys know good providers for online ap science courses**

@cmakontrack Your schedule looks good! I would recommend doing BC (self-studying for it this year) before taking AP Physics since some of the material may be calculus-based! (check again with your school though, I might be wrong)

I don’t do APs, so I have no idea about the good online courses, sorry!

Has anyone taken AP Environmental Science? I’m not a science person but I’ve heard half of the class is based off policy, is this true? What other stuff do you learn in the class?

Hey! I am new to this site/thread but it all seems super cool and informative!

My junior year schedule as of now is:
AP US History
AP English Language and Composition
AP Environmental Science
Calculus 1
AP Human Geography (only elective offered)

I attend a performing arts high school so I will be taking four classes of theatre next year, so I frankly do not think I will have time to continue on with foreign language to AP Spanish, or to take AP Calc AB/double period AP science.

Does this seem to be good? I may end up taking AB Calc and dropping human geo but as of now this is what I am planning to take.

Also I am sure this has already been discussed but what are all of your plans for the summer? I read some earlier threads that mentioned science/research based internships and such, but I am more of an english/arts person and I really do not know what to do this summer. I am planning on doing a two week Summer@Brown class because I love the school and the program sounds great, but other than that, I am sort of stuck. I interned on a professional musical workshop last month so I am trying to get another internship for the summer of the same sort of thing, but I don’t want to rely on that. I also am probably going to spend time studying for the SAT/ACT. What are you guys doing this summer? Thanks!

@bway5482 I think that discussion is only two or three pages back.

oh and your schedule looks good to me!

@Kastelano I’m taking APES right now and I don’t enjoy it at all but this is solely because my teacher is terrible. We don’t do anything in class most of the time and I’m not learning anything. If I had a good teacher I would enjoy the class.

@VaporeonKid I live 5 minutes from my state’s flagship university and they encourage high school internships!

@bway5492 Welcome to the site! Nice schedule - I’m taking APUSH in junior year as well  I feel you about being an english/arts person and looking for something to do over the summer. I’m kind of in limbo about that myself right now. I was going to volunteer at the botanical gardens or the nature & science museum if I couldn’t find anything else to do. Also a summer job possibly. But I guess I’ll just have to see haha.
