Does anyone else have really uneven strengths and weaknesses? I’ve never gotten higher than a B- in a math class, and I’ve gotten two Cs. While I’ve made As in my science classes, it’s been a struggle. I try hard in math, I truly do, but I find myself looking at homework or the board in class and thinking “what in the world does this even mean”? I want to understand math, I really do, but no matter how much I seem to study and work with the teacher, I struggle to make Bs. In contrast to that, I’ve never gotten anything less than an A in an English, History, or Foreign language class. I speak French and Spanish at a high level, plus small bits of lots of other languages, I’m mostly self-taught. Part of this stuff is definitely what I’m interested in, and also what my parents raised me around, but some of it seems to be purely natural aptitude/lack thereof. I feel like I should try harder in my math class, but that usually just doesn’t work and feels useless. Does anyone else have this problem/the opposite one?
Deciding between AP Lang and APUSH… I could take both but I’d probably die so I’d rather not.
Who’s taking AP Bio next year? Literally everyone I know is taking AP Chem.
@bella22 While I don’t have drastically uneven strengths myself, I do know quite a few people who are that way. I personally find foreign languages difficult and have problems following along at times. For math, I think it’s a matter of familiarizing yourself with the material by understanding and repeatedly practicing problems at this point — if you really are helpless with math, then get a tutor or ask a classmate to help you out! Don’t sweat about trying harder in class, it just adds to your stress. Do your best
@bella22 I think math is definitely a subject that is hard to grasp. I personally never liked it throughout middle school until I hit high school, and now I figured out how to make math work for me and I throughly enjoy it. What I do is copy every problem that the teacher puts up and complete it myself as he/she does so on the board, so that I can put what he/she taught into practice, and see where I go wrong. Sometimes with math you can feel the urge to watch the explanations passively without doing the problems yourself, but I would suggest doing every problem given, just for the extra practice. But, if there is a class that consistently does not make sense for you, that is okay! No one is expected to be amazing at everything! Each and every person has strengths and weaknesses, and that is something that you may just need to accept. For me, I struggle with foreign language classes and always have, no matter how hard I try. I get fine grades in the class, but my expectations are lower than they are for all other classes, and I know that I will not continue onto AP or later in life. I just accepted that it is not my strong suit and I try not to get too upset over bad grades in the class as long as I tried my best
@bella22 woah yes my strengths and weaknesses are well defined
except they fluctuate somewhat; some days I’m an inept writer and a great mathematician
other days I can’t even algebra but my words are hawt
my violin playing, on the other hand, is consistently terrible
and on the topic of maths:
I used to love math 'cuz it was like a little break from the real world-- sort of like books.
Later, I loved it 'cuz the peeps in my math class were always way chill and interesting.
Now I love math 'cuz it straddles a line between beauty and functionality, sets of sets of axioms and systems which model our world and one another.
@OMPursuit I did find out the other day that I can get my math grade up to a B by the end of the quarter, so that’s cool.
What APs/Honors are people taking this year? I’m taking Euro and Spanish lang, I don’t technically take either of those classes cause my high school does above AP for most things and I know Spanish through other things, but I’m taking the exam for both of them.
I’m taking Calc I/II, general chemistry, an art class called ‘Visual Communications’ which is pretty fun, and PLTW PoE. It’s really cool you’re taking AP Spanish already! I’ve gotten pretty advanced for a sophomore but I’m still a year behind you, haha. I’ll probably just take the Calc BC exam so nobody asks me to take first year calc in college.
@OMPursuit I learned Spanish on my own and abroad, so I’ve never taken it in class, I just know it. I’m gonna do pre-calc next year, I’m always so impressed by people who do calc before Senior year, let alone before Junior year
Pre-cakc is awesome (or so goes it in my mathy circles)! Hopefully you have fun with high school math and beyond
@bella22
tfw you write the essays, you take the tests, but your recommendations come after the submission deadline
@bella22 I have the same problem. I usually do poorly in math and science, but I do really well in social studies classes, English, and French.
Is it a bad idea to take math electives to fill up my math requirement instead of taking pre-Calc like everyone else? I hate math and have no intention of continuing with it at all. I also want to take Forensic Science (which looks really cool) instead of Physics (which seems torturous and stressful for me). My schedule is going to be pretty full next year with AP Lang, AP Gov, Honors classes, and two languages, I don’t feel like adding stress by taking classes which are hard and useless for me in the long run (going to college for International Relations).
I’m just worried that colleges would look down on my schedule of math electives like Intro to Stats and Fundamentals of Business instead of Pre-Calc.
@Kastelano I think it depends on what kind of career/major you want and what kind of college you want to go to. You should probably take some kind of math next year because almost all colleges want 3, but some only want 3 (not 4) and your senior year could be free of math.
I’m kind of in the same boat- I’m thinking about taking Statistics junior year and taking Formal Logic at our local university senior year-- I didn’t consider it as an option at first, but I really don’t like the math dept. at my school except for one teacher (who teaches statistics) who might be retiring after my junior year.
Does anyone here know anything about the SAT subject tests? Are they worth it?
^
The SAT subject tests are required by some schools, and can sometimes get you out of prereqs. @shaneyboy123 @noplayallwork
@literallyliteral I hoping to take AP Bio over the summer, but I signed up to take the AP exam in May because I’ve already been studying for the USABO, so I think that’ll work it fine.
Another thing. It looks like everyone here has already posted their expected class schedules for junior year, and I would like to do the same soon so that I can get some input, but I’m kind of a special case. You see, I’ve been homschooled for most of my scholastic career, but I recently put my name in the lottery for a local charter school. However, even if I do get, it is a small school (only offers 10 APs, and I think that the current sophomore class is less than 450), but I really want some more lab experience and a more social environment. If I get in, then I’ll come back here and post my intended class schedule. Otherwise, my class schedule will likely be somewhat different.
Ok so here’s my schedule for next year:
Honors American Lit
Accelerated PreCalc
Accelerated Anatomy & Physiology
APUSH
Honors Spanish 3
Marketing
Journalism 2
Should I see if I can take another AP? I don’t know what class that would be but probably something history/English related as those are my 2 strongest subjects. Input would be helpful and any suggestions to improve my classes would be great! (I’m an aspiring polisci/prelaw student)
From what I’ve heard, AP US Government and Comparative Government are easier as APs go, Comp. Gov. to a larger extent. Have you already taken/are taking either of these classes? They might be good for a Poli. Sci. Major.
I was planning on taking AP Gov for sure senior year! But at this point I’m not sure if I should try to fit it in next year instead of Journalism 2. I don’t need another tech credit (which is what Journalism fulfills) so Journalism 2 would just be a class that I would take to fill space. The only reason I haven’t talked to my guidance counselor about taking AP Gov next year is that I don’t want to overwhelm myself but i’m really not sure ahaha.
