High School Class of 2019

@OMPursuit This year I’ve been researching allelopathy in invasive honeysuckles.

My top choice is Dartmouth and I’m pretty sure I’ve decided on political science as my major and theater as my minor. My top 3 backup schools are Duke, University of North Carolina, and Northeastern University.

I keep putting off applying to volunteer at the botanical gardens but I need to request a letter of recommendation from one of my teachers so I should probably get on that. Volunteering there seems really cool and enjoyable but the commute sucks. I wish there were better volunteer opportunities closer to where I live.

I decided next school year I’m not going to overload myself with classes like I did this year. Next year I’m probably gonna take Gothic Literature as an elective which I’m super excited about. I also decided on APUSH and AP US Gov for APs so I’m happy about that.

I’m currently researching some areas in ordinary diff eqs @OMPursuit

@RussianbioHacker woot, take the fight to those invasive plants!
I’m too fond of honeysuckles to do that, so you are a braver soul than I

@CharlotteLetter Oh, hey! Our research areas sort of overlap. CTRNNs turn into a bunch of diffy Qs, so I’ve gotta use Euler’s method and other Runge-Kutta goodies to propagate my networks. :0

Finally starting the scheduling process.

Planning for something like…

AP Lang
AP Bio
APUSH or just regular US History. Not sure if I could handle the workload.
Pre-Calc Honors
French 4 (no honors available)

@CharlotteLetter @OMPursuit y’all both are so cool! I’d love to do some form of math research soon, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. We’ll see!

@VaporeonKid Woohoo, math! Lemme (or ‘lemma’) know how that goes!

okay the thing with APUSH (just like WHAP) is that like half your grade is cornell notes. you’re expected to print-out and take cornell notes (and turn them in) for everything you read in the textbook, in addition to the other book work. i feel like thats way too much time that could be spent on something more… efficient, although i’m sure it helps you,

tldr busy work

@OMPursuit currently doing research on the effects of hookah smoke particulates at the genetic level!

now im worried about what would happen if not enough people sign up for AP bio to make it class (happened last year)

should i take APES or struggle through AP chem (i hate chem…)

@literallyliteral Same thing happens at my school. A lot of APs don’t get offered because not enough kids sign up for them. It really sucks for the kids that actually want to take them.

So I have this teacher that I consistently have problems with and have tried to talk to them about it, yet when I do nothing changes. Should I report them, knowing that they may lose their job? If they aren’t doing their job, I feel something should be done about it. At this point, the only solution is through administration. I just don’t want my emotions to get in the way of my judgement.

@literallyliteral APES is so fun and interesting but also pretty easy. 10/10 recommend!!

Can you take AP Bio online or something? A little weird for a science, but people do it. I wouldn’t do AP chem if you hate chem. Are you taking physics? I have the opposite problem, I’m worried I’m not going to get into Human Genetics next year :frowning:

@OMPursuit, @CharlotteLetter, how’d you guys get into math research? I really want to do some research, but I’m not sure how to go about it (considering the closest university is 30 min. away). Any suggestions?

@Mathophile26 Not math (at least for me), cog. sci/robotics! Most science fields actually have huge, math-intensive research areas… which those undergrads not excited about math don’t want to pursue. It’s way easier to get into that than straight-up math research due doubly to the depth of knowledge needed for lots of math research and the breadth of not-math fields available.

As for myself, I met one of my mentor’s graduate students and we hit it off. He hooked me up with his advisor, and we’ve been corresponding since! After a series of emails I met with them in a library and the prof’s office respectively.
You might not have the benefit of meeting a grad student, so it should be okay to send emails to researchers whose work interests you.

If you want to pursue independent math research, you can check out some of the recommended-for-undergrads problems on the Open Problem Garden and the CrowdMath project on Art of Problem Solving!

Good luck!

yeah i decided to just do APES as my backup. i’m planning to do AP physics senior year. i just couldn’t force myself to go through another year of chemistry (semester 1 was a STRUGGLE), even if it meant a less ‘rigorous’ AP.

@OMPursuit, thanks so much - I’ll definitely look into those websites! I’ll probably look into what research is going on at the university near me and send some emails

Hey everyone! I know I’m a little (or a lot) late to the party, but I thought I’d better post my tentative class schedule for next year:

British Literature
Spanish 3
AP Physics 1
AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics
Government
Linear Algebra (1 semester)
Health (1 semester as well)

Any feedback? Also, should I try to take AP Physics 2 before senior year so I can take the Physics C classes senior year? (I hoping to be a biotech major, if that helps.)

just ran the race of my life
