High School Class of 2019

@equationlover
To study the ACT, I used study books from the library and did many practice tests that I found online. I found that the best way was to just continuously learn from the mistakes and have more practice (especially with the timing). Everyone is different, but that is just how I did it. Hope this helps!

I took it cold and was beyond shooketh. My best advice is get really good at reading fast and using your calculator fast.

Also, Khan Academy’s SAT prep can be pretty good ACT prep if you do the practice sections with ~1/2 the time.

Hey all! I suggest UWorld if you want to practice time management, or just math / reading in general

Has anybody heard about Cal Tech Up Close?

I know cal Tech has been pretty secretive (= invite only) about their fly in program, but last year’s seniors found the app online available for anybody to apply. Any news for this year?

I haven’t heard of Caltech’s program, but I also haven’t been looking. I got invited to apply to Pomona and Harvey Mudd’s fly-ins, and I’m considering applying to Rice SOAR.

@awesomepolyglot Oh me too! I applied to Harvey Mudd’s

Oh, shoot, POP apps are due tommorow-ish, aren’t they? Whoops

Ooph, is anyone applying to Questbridge this year? I used to think that I was a pretty decent writer, but I just looked up “essays that worked” and now I think my voice sounds so incredibly young… I would love to commiserate with someone, haha!

@HopeTsai Don’t let “essays that work” discourage you because a lot of the essays that work that are published are actually pretty bad. I’ve personally liked some of the Johns Hopkins ones but the Costco essay and all of the grandparent essays are pretty terrible. Your young voice will probably end up being refreshing, especially if you write a good essay (which you sound like you can)

@krevin2000 That’s awesome! Could I PM you?

@ahardboiledegg Thank you for your encouragement! ^^ I was blown away by the Johns Hopkins essays, which sorta were the ones that led to me questioning myself, haha…

First day today! For those of you who have already started, how’s school been so far?

!! @awesomepolyglot I won’t start until Sept 5th

@HopeTsai I am as well!

@celestialkairos Ooh, good luck! How are your essays coming along? dies

@HopeTsai Honestly I’m dying too rip

I am taking AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP BC Calculus, AP Literature, Honors Marine Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Economics, and Advanced Political and Legal Studies. Best of luck to everyone in their studies this year!

@ future class of 2023:

I started a group chat with other students on this site who have applied to a bunch of fly-ins and are waiting to hear back. Just PM me if you also applied to 2-3 programs (if we’re being honest it’s more likely 8-9 haha) and you want to join the convo :slight_smile:

Sunday night homework club, anyone? School’s starting back, so SNHC should too!

Studying APUSH is really hard, but I used this really concise textbook called “Visions of America” that helped me study for the class, and I got a 5. :slight_smile:

If you need any help on APUSH, feel free to contact me.

Here we go.
