High School Class of 2020

what about physics?

@Microsoft_Ninja Is Mechanics better than Electricity and Magnetism?

@Mahindra three AP sciences in one year?

@Microsoft_Ninja why are you self studying bio?

@Mahindra

No it’s just that mechanics is kind of a prerequisite to E and M, otherwise it would be very difficult. Think of it this way: most school only have one class called AP physics C, in where mechanics is in the first semester, and E and M in the second. They would then take both AP exams. Many things in E and M are touched upon in mechanics. From what I’ve read, our schools do it the same way, in which they both have separate classes for mechanics and E and M (thankfully for us). An extreme analogy to this situation would be going from algebra 2 directly to AP calculus bc, without ever learning precalculus.

@Itwixster

I’m self studying bio because even though I don’t want to be a doctor, bio interests me, but I don’t have time to take in in school

this year im in
ap world
engish 10 honors
chemistry honors
italian 4 honors
spanish 4 honors
algebra 2 honors

next year im taking
ap statistics
apush
ap psychology maybe
ap physics 1
ap lang
pre calculus honors
advanced spanish

i’m taking

ap us history
spanish 3 honors
algebra 2/trig
american lit honors
chemistry honors

@Microsoft_Ninja
@ltwixster I will take AP Physics C Mechanics first then. No I am no longer self-studying bio

@that4n6er

Are those your current year classes

What do you guys think of this Junior year schedule?

AP English Language
AP Spanish Language & Culture
AP Calculus BC (AB over summer)
AP Computer Science A
AP US Government & Politics
Honors Physics

  • required PE classes

@nick3162 Pretty good schedule. It would be better if you could take AP Physics though.

3 AP exams this year @Microsoft_Ninja

@Mahindra You’re going to take 3 AP sciences next year? Good luck… especially with Physics, because I’ve heard that its a killer.

@nick3162 Looks good, but I really wouldn’t recommend taking AP Cal AB over the summer, especially if you are going to take the AP exam.

And its good that you are taking Honors Physics and not AP, because I think you definitely need Physics before AP Physics. I have friends who got really high As in Honors Physics last year, but now have a B or C in AP Physics, taught by the same teacher.

Yikes, sorry for triple posting!

@nerdy01

you shouldn’t discourage someone because you think some think is difficult. You should be encouraging him instead.

@Mahindra

take whatever you want and don’t let anyone stop you

@nerdy01
also which ap physics… there are 4

@Microsoft_Ninja It is AP Physics C, both E&M and Mech, I believe.

Also, I didn’t mean to be discouraging. I was just surprised that someone would take 3 AP sciences in one year, and I honestly think that you should challenge yourself as much as possible, but not so far as that your gpa/grades would suffer. I think the primary reason to take an AP class in a subject is to thoroughly understand it, and I don’t think that would be possible with taking 3 AP science classes at the same time, since they are quite intensive classes and you would have even less time to devote to one subject. For me, I would take AP Bio and AP Chem in junior year, and AP Physics in senior year if I wanted to take all 3. Especially if you are also going heavy on your ECs since it is junor year. But that is just my opinion and everyone is free to do as they wish. People are free to judge how they can handle their course load.

Also, I’m just curious @Mahindra which science would you take senior year? And kudos to you for possibly taking on such a heavy course load.

@nerdy01

Our schools do it the same way in which they split AP Physics C into two classes: mechanics and E&M.

In senior year @Mahindra will probably take E&M

@nerdy01

Good advice, thank you

@Mahindra

Thanks for the advice, but I don’t think its a good idea to take 6 AP’s simultaneously. Beyond 4 AP’s, I think colleges start to care less about the specifics of your course rigor and more about what you put into extracurriculars. I’d much rather use the extra time to enhance the quality of my application in other ways.

Besides, I’m not just trying to stack on as many AP’s as humanly possible to attract colleges- my goal is to cultivate a well-rounded and interest-based schedule.
