High School Class of 2020

@collegeready33 Cool. What type? You compete at the national level?

@nerdy01 I also did public forum but my partner wasnt that in to it. By the way, I hated the UBC’s topic.

@thehhs12 You could say its a blessing because we keep on getting crappy topics. First, there were UBC’s. The, December was sports, a really stupid topic. Now they are talking about Catalonia.

I want to do an internship over the summer, but there’s like literally nothing not related to STEM. Anyone having the same problem?

@ab2002 What field is it in? If its political science or economics, you could email a professor at a nearby university asking to do a policy paper. If its business or finance, you could email human resources asking them for an internship. Idk about anything else though

@Mahindra I was thinking about working on a campaign as that’s what my friend did (goes to WashU for PS). Yes, it’s political science.

I do public forum and I try to compete nationally, but since my team doesn’t communicate well, some of our teammates are going behind our backs and competing nationally and when we try to sign up they always “forget”. I found out today I have a tournament on Friday and Saturday and I have not done one bit of research so yay for me!

@collegeready33 How do you guys afford to travel long distances for bid tournaments?

@ab2002 Oh ok. You could do that but I think a policy paper would be better. You could submit it next year at MIT Inspire.

Oh, everyone has to pay for it individually .

@collegeready33 So you guys pay like $600 for each trip!?!?!??!?

Only the people who go to the big tournaments, for the people who go to local tournaments are school pays for us.

@collegeready33 That makes sense!

Hey! Pretty cool to see you all do debate! That’s awesome! I do Original Oratory Speech! Good luck to you all in your debates! Heard Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum are tough from my teammates.

Have a good day!

@anthonytheboy Thx! Ya, Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum take hours of research. How is Original Oratory?

@Mahindra Original Oratory is very fun and fulfilling. Almost everybody is very talented, though, and it terrifies me, but the people there are very, very nice!

Have a good day!

@Mahindra I do policy debate, and let me tell you, public forum was a picnic compared to it! I did public forum for state last year, and it was my first tournament and I broke to quarterfinals. Policy is ridiculously difficult, so I’m not really expecting to be able to qualify for TOC.

However, my first love is original oratory. I qualified for nationals in it last year but was unable to attend. I’ve done every speech event otherwise (outside of impromptu and extemp), but I still go back to oratory.

@phanakin Ya public forum is easier compared to other forms of debate. But the easiest is congress. Policy is probably the most difficult, especially with spreading, frameworks, and kritiks

@anthonytheboy Oh ok thx!

Am I the only one whose school doesn’t offer AP classes?

(They think they’re too good for it, we have these “Advanced Topics” in addition to Honors courses but they don’t teach to the AP test)

@Mahindra I’ve never done Congress before, but what terrifies me about it is that it’s like a popularity contest?? and I cannot make friends in debate — speech, sure, but not debate. What do you do?

@anthonytheboy !!! What’s your oratory topic this year? It’s always fun to meet another orator!

@dearoldshiz You’re definitely not the only one whose school doesn’t offer AP classes! There’s a few high schools around who do the same.

@phanakin I wouldnt say I make friends but I do meet new people most of whom are very friendly and chill

@phanakin Hey! Nice to meet another orator! My topic is on the meaning of everything. How about you?

Have a good day!

I am part of FBLA. It costs so much money for the trips.
