High School Class of 2020

@sputniik Thanks and good luck to you as well!

@sputniik @chb088 Good luck!

Have a nice day.

@sputniik i’m applying to a local research program at the Broad Institute and then I cold emailed some professors and got responses but I still have to meet with them and talk.

@sputniik I’m hoping to make MOP this year. Gonna know results in May.

@sputniik I am thinking about applying to be to the teen volunteer summer program for UMich Medicine along with other things

Does anyone have tips on being able to help with research at universities? I know that people say that cold emailing professors is the best way to do so, is that the case/has that worked for any of you guys?

@collegeready33 That seems to be the best way to do it, although if possible, maybe it would be better to visit them in their office so that you have a face-to-face interaction. I’ve never done either, but I’m planning on emailing a professor at my local university over the summer for research opportunities.

@collegeready33 I’m planning on doing that, so you aren’t alone on that. I haven’t done it yet, so I don’t know if it will be successful, but the Career Center at my school has told me that it is a good idea. I’m sure it is okay to do that. If I get a response, I will let you know!

Have a nice day.

@collegeready33 @excoverer that’s what I did. I sent out around 15 cold emails to local professors. I got a few no’s, and a couple are meeting/calling me and another said that there were openings, but to check later. I just sent out a general template and then changed a few things based on the professor’s name, school, and research area and why I’m interested and how it relates.

@ps1kd only 15?? I had to send out 250 to get an internship, albeit it was paid

@ps1kd Really cool to know this. Thanks! I hope you have a good time.

I wrote to many professors in my area yesterday morning, and none of them have responded yet. I will probably wait a bit more to see what happens.

Have a nice day.

If you’re going into Math Research, Crowdmath is a possibility as well. I don’t know whether or not colleges would consider it as highly as researching with a local professor or something like that since Crowdmath is a research opportunity open to all high school students regardless of skill and experience.

Basically they have a different math research topic each year, and they’ll provide the resources/research papers in that topic, as well as a set of unsolved problems regarding the topic, which the Crowdmath community will work on with some college research mentors (It’s mostly been Jesse Geneson from Harvard) over the course of the year. This year’s (2019) research topic is Graph Coloring, more specifically Zero-forcing sets. You can find the website here: https://artofproblemsolving.com/polymath/mitprimes2019

I’m planning on taking AP Calculus (at my school we aren’t allowed to pick AB or BC, we’re sorted into one based on grades), AP Psychology, AP US Gov and Politics, AP English Lit and Russian for Business. I also might take Business and Financial Managment if I can find enough room in my schedule for it.
