High School Class of 2020

@ps1kd I’m not too familiar with the ACT, but are you sure it’s worth it to retake it just for that 1 point? I know in the SAT, colleges can see how many times you retake it, and if you retake too much, especially for the smallest score boost, that could negatively impact your application.
Personally I was pretty upset with my 1540 on the SAT, and I was going to retake it, but as this was my second time taking it, and I’m already in the ballpark for top colleges, it’s not really worth it. A 35 is a really good score on the ACT, and you shouldn’t worry about it. Test scores only make up a small portion of the application.

@ktong777 looking at naviance, for Vanderbilt, the difference between a 36 ACT/1570-1600 SAT and a 35 ACT/1530-1560 SAT changes the acceptance rate from like 80 or 90 to 10-20 so just based on that I’m retaking.

@ps1kd Oh ok.

How’s school going for everyone? I find it weird how this year in 2019, some of us will be finding out some of our college decisions. If all goes well for me, maybe this year I’ll get into my top choice!

@ps1kd I am sorry to know you are noticing this on Naviance, but just in case this helps, I wanted to let you know that we have submitted four kids to Vanderbilt in the past and on Naviance, two of them had an ACT score below 32, and one of them had a SAT in the low 1500s and another in the high 1400s. If you have great ECs, a great essay, a good GPA, and great recommendations, you definitely stand a chance. A 35 on the ACT is super impressive! Good work, and I mean that, and I’m sure most people would feel the same.

@collegeready33 Thanks for asking how school is going! It’s going alright for me. I find AP Physics 1 very challenging, but everything else is enjoyable and alright. I really enjoy my English class as always. How is school going for you? And good luck for your applications.

Have a nice day.

@ps1kd What you say about local students is true, but I’m in Virginia, not Tennessee.

Nevertheless, good luck for Vandy. It’s a super nice school, and Nashville is awesome! I’m sure with a 35 ACT, you have a great GPA, ECs, and teacher recommendations. You got this!

Have a nice day.

@MaineLonghorn Thank you!

Have a nice day.

@collegeready33 School’s been going great, but second semester is probably going to be pretty challenging due to APs. I’m pretty worried about AP Seminar and AP Lit, and slightly worried about APUSH. This year’s been pretty different since I’m trying out so many new things (taking classes at community college, volleyball, getting a job, creating a school-wide math program, etc). I’m enjoying everything a lot (except homework). Good luck on your college decisions! I hope you get into your top school!

Also, I need some advice real quick! I took Statistics at my local community college last semester in place of AP Statistics since my school removed it and they’re no longer offering the AP test. Should I spend the time to find a testing center for AP Statistics or should I just not take it? My school won’t let me do dual enrollment, so I’m only getting high school credit for the college class. If I take the AP test, I could still get college credit at some colleges, but is it worth the time and effort?

@ktong777 I personally think it’s worth the time and effort! You put in the work to learn Statistics at a post-secondary level, and you should have something besides high school credit to show for it. I do think that, if you decide to test for AP Statistics, you’ll have to do some review of the AP Stats curricula just in case—maybe the class at the community college didn’t spend too much time on chapters that are really crucial, for example—but I think it’s worth the extra work!

Of course, if your workload is really heavy for this year, then you’re a-okay with bypassing it entirely.

@ktong777 Maybe try looking at some stats practice books and see how much you would need to study for the exam? If you feel like you know most of the info, I think it’s worth taking. Finding a test center shouldn’t be that hard either.

@ktong777 I would take the AP test. It’s not too expensive, and you could opt-out of a class.

@phanakin I just took a look at a past test. Doesn’t seem that bad, but I probably will need to review a bit. I’ll think about this some more. I do already have a number of APs to worry about (Lit, Seminar, and US History). Oh, and I just remembered I’m taking SAT Chemistry and Physics in May as well, so I’ll probably take AP Stats test in my senior year if needed.

@ps1kd I think I’ll probably need to study for a month or so. Doesn’t seem too bad, but I’ll probably take the test next year since I’m pretty busy this year.

@ab2002 Price isn’t an issue for me, and I’m not sure that I’d want to opt-out of a class (I have my favorite classes that day).

Freshman BIO is nothing but memorization. The problem is when it gets to AP. It’s nothing but application, reading graphs, and some headaches. good luck lol but paying attention will help if you decide to pursue AP

@kthai470 I agree completely, thankfully my freshman bio teacher had some AP style questions on the tests which helped a lot on the AP Test. Doing the SAT subject test freshman year also helped since that had some application type problems if I remember correctly.

@ktong777 I meant you could get credit to opt-out of a college course

@ab2002 Oh, duhh!! I don’t know how I misinterpreted that, lol. I’ll consider it. Not all colleges accept AP credit, so I’ll have to do more research on that.

Is anyone applying to summer programs? :-0 I’m applying (and hoping for the best) for ISSYP + YSPA + PROMYS + WTP + SSP. Maybe I’ll try for COSMOS? Who knows

@sputniik my D20 applied for Governors School. She won’t hear until March.

@chb088 Ooh, good luck to her! :-]
