My possible junior schedule is
AP Lang
Honors chemistry
Comparative anatomy and physiology
AP government
French 3
Honors pre calculus
Some electives (haven’t decided yet)
Since everyone seems to be posting their planned schedules next year, mine is:
AP Lang
AP Bio
AP US History
AP Music Theory
AP Art History
Honors Studio Art
Honors Hebrew Lang
Honors precalc
writing mentorship elective with my fav teacher
there’s also a bunch of religious classes but I’m not going to list those lol
^^ I’m a little heavy on the arts and light on STEM but I tend to lean toward humanities so that’s pretty typical for
school ecs will be: Debate, EIC of newspaper, Drama/Thespian Society, Charity Commitee, cross country, swim, (hopefully) mock trial and Jewish mock trial, Model Congress club I’m starting, Head of political activism club, and national english honor society
I’ll also be studying for a national bible contest, writing a ton, studying for SAT math and ACTs, and training for the boston marathon I qualified for last year.
So, not excited for next year. Doesn’t seem like I’ll have much time to myself but it’ll all pay off when I can breathe in the summer.
I’m not entirely sure how my schedule will be because I’m considering switching to a virtual school through my county because of serious mental health reasons and also full time dual enrollment at my local cc.
It’ll probably look something like this, though.
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
Physics Honors
AP English Language
AP United States History
2 periods of dance( one as a TA/choreographer for freshmen and one for all the girls on dance team)
Obviously, if I switch to online, I’ll have to find something else in place of dance and if I do full time Dual Enrollment, the classes would just be cc versions of those listed.
@cl10012 That does sound like a competitive schedule! I’d personally recommend taking AP Lang instead of an English elective, as it isn’t too terrible for anyone who speaks English as a first language and is a decent writer, but that’s up to you - you look like you’re taking a rigorous courseload. I personally will only be taking 3 or 4 next year.
As for my extracurriculars - I’m a class officer, I have officer positions in Biology Olympiad and Model UN (what I spend most of my time doing), and I do Science Olympiad, Academic Olympics, Diversity Council (teaching elementary schoolers about diversity in our community), and HOSA to a lesser extent. I also serve on the board of a nonprofit, volunteer a lot at a local makerspace (am currently helping them get their programming of classes/workshops for students off the ground), and run my own tutoring business. Also choir (school/All-State, probably gonna try out for All-National this year).
Also, I wish I could take as many classes as some of y’all are doing. We have 6 periods and that’s it - some people take a extra 7th period, but it’s at the same time as when all of the clubs meet, so that effectively prohibits you from doing any extracurriculars.
wistfulwords- relatable! Are you into art and music? I’m into one, and not the one that involves drawing lol. Have you thought about not doing either studio art or theory and more intensively pursuing ECs in that area instead? Just a thought. I have considered taking theory but this year it’s offered during my orchestra class- go figure!
stanford2025- Oh nice! I know some people who have taken AP Psych or comp sci as freshmen, but both those classes are online and I do a lot better with a teacher. Currently in APWH, only sophomore AP that isn’t online. Doing well but it’s definitely pushing me outside the comfort zone. I tried to remind myself that getting one bad grade is okay because it will give me what I crave- real feedback and honesty about what I need to work on. Sometimes it’s not as rewarding to simply be told good job…
The problem with my school is that the prerequisite problem totally disappears in 11th, so unlike you only being able to take 3, a lot of people nonchalantly load up on 5 or 6.
would rather focus meaningfully on the ones I do take. Can’t possibly use every single resource my school has because there are too many. XD
chrysalism- Thanks! Wow, those are advanced APs to take sophomore year! How is the combo of calc and USH XD
I don’t know what I want to do either. Trying to use ECs for their original purpose of exploration (school clubs are often resume fillers, sigh) and be somewhat creative. I’m interested in international relations and psychology, but I also really enjoy math and score high (in a really hard class this year and still doing well). Not sure how I feel about science- my class last year had too many other factors to gauge my interest, and so far chem this year has just been easy because my teacher guides us along more than other teachers. It would be ideal for me to go somewhere with opportunities in both the humanities and STEM.
Yes the PSAT! I’m waiting on a PACT and aah i just want to know how I did lol… my school had a ton of NMFs last year so I can’t help but wonder if preparation would do something for me.
Darn broke the pattern! Kinda.
Planned junior schedule:
AP Lang
APUSH
AP chem or bio (2 periods)
Honors Precalc
Honors French 3
Orchestra
Schedules look great everyone! Your schools have so many more APs available to take than mine! Oh well. Anyway, looks great!
Since everyone else is, Junior year:
-Precalculus Honors CCP
-AP Microeconomics and Government Honors or Economic Honors and Government Honors (I don’t know which to take, does anyone have any input on that?)
-English 3
-Chemistry Honors (and then AP Chem senior year, as we have to take a year of honors chem before we can take AP)
-Spanish 4 Honors CCP
-Physiology Honors
@Aurora23 What is the reputation of AP Microecon at your school? I’ve found these choices should depend highly on the teacher and the class difficulty in combination with the other classes on your schedule. Since your school doesn’t offer many APs, I would say to go for the AP unless the teacher is of poor quality, the class is either too easy or too hard, or you have zero interest in the subject area.
@isla701 Okay, thanks! There isn’t much of reputation yet, as it is the first year that they are offering it. I’ll have to talk to some juniors though and see what they think of the class. Thanks again!
I was planning to take:
-AP Lang
-AP Calc BC
-AP Bio
-AP US Hist
-AP Spanish (maybe)
-AICE Global Persp.
-AICE Sociology
-AP Environmental (Online)
The problem is that I have taken three years of spanish, but sophomore year I am taking a break from foreign languages. I did speak spanish with my relatives, but it is average, I don’t think I’ve learned much from those classes for AP. I’ve heard that AP Spanish is quite hard for non-Spanish speaking people in my school, but I’ve also managed to have relatively decent grades so far. Also is it a big jump from 4 AP and 3 AICE with 1 AP online?
@Aurora23 No problem!
Oh, okay, so it’s new this year. Yes, I would definitely ask juniors about it and if you ever go to see your counselor this year, try to get a handle on who’s teaching it next year. AP World is a meaningful experience for me because my teacher is confident, hardworking and just plain intelligent. My friend’s AP euro teacher at another school does nothing except give them hours of reading and stressful quizzes. So it’s really vital who you get. A lot of people at my school would go for another AP despite the teacher, but personally the teacher is really important to me, so part of it depends on whether a bad teacher is a nightmare or just a minor inconvenience for you.
If the class is new, there’s definitely some trial and error going on no matter what. My teacher sometimes has to seek the advice of the veteran teacher across the hall because AP teaching is just hard at first, even for someone that capable. So keep in mind you may have to practice extra for the exam (not that you shouldn’t do so anyway) outside of class in order to score high, especially since your teacher probably can’t go across the hall and ask for advice in those hard moments.
Good luck with whatever you decide!
@KennyStudies Would you mind explaining to me what AICE is? I’ve never heard of it but I would love to be able to take sociology lol.
Is there no Spanish 4 at your school? Also, does AP Spanish have a reputation for being hard workload-wise or just hard to earn an A in? I’ve found there’s a huge difference- for example, it’s far from impossible to get an A in APUSH at my school but the workload is quite a lot and you will have to work at it. If Spanish is like that you should consider how much time you have with the other classes factored in. If poor grades are given out due to a teacher or another factor, you’ll have to consider whether the class is really worth taking.
Also, is there a reason you’re taking 2 AP sciences? Not defensive, just curious. I think it really depends on how hard all of those classes are at your school, and how many people are able to manage a similar schedule. Good luck figuring our your schedule!!
@isla701 I already pursue music in my ECs - just taking the class since I really know composition grammar and the type of thing that AP tests on. Also, my art teacher runs the studio art class during elective period and since I’m doing the mentorship writing thing I have that period free anyways shrugs
@isla701 That helps a lot! Thank you
AICE is this University of Cambridge program that is relatively new, but is similar to IB and AP. It’s “easier” than them, but offer the same credit at certain schools. Problem is that only certain school accept it, only major or Florida ones.
There is Spanish 4 at my school, but I don’t want to take any honors at this point. It has a reputation for being hard to earn an A in. Time and workload is most likely not an issue, because I am currently taking a similar schedule to that, plus I am able to do ECs. The problem is if I am able to succeed in that class, because I haven’t reviewed it in a year, and I am not that good at the parts of speech.
The only reason I am going to take AP environmental is to just increase the amount of college level classes for my GPA. A lot of what I am doing is for my GPA bc I want to get up in ranking. None of these classes except for AP Spanish are notoriously hard, except AP Chem which I am taking right now and getting As.
Since we’re discussing our schedules for junior year I wanted to share what I have for next year. Washington State (where I live) allows juniors and seniors to do running start, where instead of having 6 periods of high school classes, you get 2-4 college classes that the public high school pays for. Or you can do a combination of the two. I’m a person who wants to do something in the science/medical field, which requires a lot of education, so I can save me some education time and money. Additionally, what I want to opt for is the associates in science path, which means that I will be able to apply directly to my major tracks for colleges. If I do the associate’s track, I can’t take any APs. However, my high school is small, so I can’t take too many specialized APs and we only have a couple of English APs and Math APs which I’m not super excited for, but all our science APs are offered at the same time. That’s the ones I want to take, but I also think it would be dumb to give up graduating with an associates for a couple of APs, considering I’m a sophomore and still have not taken any APs. What do you guys think?
@Bombgirls Many schools in my state (Florida), including my own school, have similar programs where you can earn an associate’s degree after 4 years of high school. It’s not really worth it where I live, but only because we have the Bright Futures scholarship (basically a free ride to any state university if you have a 3.5+ GPA and 100 volunteer hours), so the FL policy that anyone with an associate’s degree gets autoadmitted to a randomly selected state university doesn’t really hold up when, by putting in roughly the same effort, we can get in for free to a university of our choice. Look up your state’s policies for a) merit aid and b) how people with associate’s degrees are admitted to college. If your grades can get you enough merit aid at a better university than you could get into with your AD alone, or if you want to go out of state to college (a lot of selective out-of-state schools don’t really care about ADs), then it doesn’t really make sense if you’re only doing it to save time and money; otherwise, definitely consider it.
In other news - just got nominated for HOBY yeet yeet (finally have something relatively selective to do this summer!)
@wistfulwords Ah that makes sense. I meant to say art history, not studio art, sorry! I was wondering if that would be too many APs but since you know the Music Theory material that’s an advantage. I know Theory is hard for people who have little to no background. Best of luck!
@Aurora23 No problem! Good luck with your decision!
@KennyStudies Ah, I see. Those AICE classes sound interesting. Personally I might not jump on taking spanish if it’s that hard, but of course you know what’s best for youraelf. You should think about class alternatives that you would take for your GPA if you don’t do Spanish. Your school sounds interesting- most APs at mine are really difficult. Congrats on AP Chem, though, that’s great!
Oh yeah, summer. I’m going to be very spoiled with a multiple week trip to Europe, otherwise I would have applied to more programs. Only other stuff I’m planning on is a week at my favorite music program (it’ll be good if I get a top chair again) and testing out of a grad requirement. In Europe I’ll be studying that material, really working on my French and keeping up my instrument. Maybe I’ll do driver’s ed too, but I also plan on test prep so I want enough time for that. Ack, too much to do. I should also volunteer at my usual program to keep things up with the staff there (plus I so enjoy it).
As I said, I am applying to SAMS, but honestly I more than likely won’t do a summer program. I’ll probably pick up more hours at work, volunteer a bit, and work on my RPi, Arduino, and news projects.
