High School Class of 2021

hey guys! I just joined cc! My high school is in a very rural area without honors, APs, and good extracurriculars besides sports, so I definitely am struggling with comparing myself to a lot of the people on here! Im wanting to go into medicine (I know that’s terribly cliche), and I am starting to have to make decisions that will affect my life. I have the choice btw taking a few dual enrollment courses junior and senior year, or I can get my associates degree in high school. Im def leaning towards the associates degree bc it sort of makes up for my lack of prestigious courses.

Hi all, it’s been a bit  I’m trying to think something over and figured I’d post it.

I just found out that I’m going to be abroad in Europe for literally half the summer. (Sorry, not meaning to sound entitled.) This isn’t a study abroad program- it’s a parental work trip that I’m tagging along on. I plan to visit a lot of places with my family. But being a work trip, there will be times where I’m in town (not a major city) without the ability to go many places because my family is working. I’m just wondering if there would be useful things to fill that time with.

We have already discussed getting foreign language lessons and continued private lessons on my instrument so I still practice. I also intend to do some SAT/ACT prep myself during that downtime. Is there anything else that would be beneficial to me that I could do in this situation?

good

@Anna001 I am in the same boat and am now considering 2 options - Bellevue College and Cascadia College to get my associates because they will provide more options to launch me into medicine.
@isla701 if you plan on having a good internet connection, try looking for online classes that allow you to learn new things, take stuff at your own pace, and possibly even get high school credit for you. However, if you want to emphasize the high school credit part of it, go talk to your teachers/ counselor because I know that my school allows us to take online classes for credit, but the one my friend goes to does not. This also goes for learning a new language. If you want to learn a new language, then check out if you can also get high school credit for passing a language test when you get back. What I listed is a lot of work, so make sure to find something fun to do in each area that you visit. ;

I’m thinking of taking a couple CC classes (namely Calc 1 and Plant and Soil Science) over the summer and then do 2 again during the school year (Intro to Forensic Sci and Abnormal Psych) for junior year. Should I? I’d get a pretty substantial GPA boost from it. The current valedictorian did this. The classes also seem super interesting.

Hi, CavsFan2003 I was wondering how you did in that deca category, because I am doing that category this year.

@highschoolseniour I did alright, will be attending the state competition in March!

Well I submitted for application for UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Academy this week. I really hope I get in as it is my top choice for this summer!

@stanford200381 Good luck, mate!

@CavsFan2003 did you get into CMU Sams? I just found out I was accepted!!

@Potter3846 I never finished the application lol rip

@CavsFan2003 there’s still time to apply!

Well I took a practice SAT today and got a 1280 (R/W 650 and Math 630) not nearly as good as I hoped I would do, and I need to increase my score by like 250 points. I missed a lot of math questions but most of them were geometry or algebra / based problems I have not learn yet, so I am hoping by June I can increase that score to atleast a 1350 since I’ll be done with geometry and algebra 2, then I will start some prep.

I think I’m going to have to take the March SAT for school, so I hope a score in the 1200’s won’t hurt me too much during college applications.

Thought I could get some feed back on my possible schedule for next year.
just an FYI, (AICE is college level like AP and IB. AS level is the first level, and A is the second level, which usually has more depth/it’s continuation of the AS course)
Here’s my possible schedule:

AP Physics 1
Honors Pre-Calculus
AICE Media Studies AS
AICE Psychology A
AICE US History A
AICE Global Perspectives AS (required research class)
AICE English Literature AS

I was think of dropping A Level AICE Psychology because I’m taking AS level right now and although the class is interesting, psychology is seen as “soft”. However, the class would be of great help since the teacher makes it pretty easy and I can do my homework in it. If I were to change it I would switch into AP Stats (ouch, a 3rd math-based class).
Also I know that I could take away AICE media studies as it may also appear as an easy college level class but I feel like it will be the class the I would genuinely enjoy the most out of all them as I’m very interested in the topic; I will drop it if necessary though.

I will also of taking AP Microeconomics online (semester class, probably will start during the summer and finish at the beginning of the school year).
If I stay in AICE psych do you think it’s a good idea to take AP Stats online while in school?? Thanks for the feedback in advance!

@learnerr21 Finally! Someone who also has AICE. It would depend on how much time you spend on each class and how your time management is. If you want to challenge yourself, you can switch to stats or do it online. However, if I were you, I’d go with more AP classes since AICE is still a relatively new program which not all schools accept. If you are in Florida and want to go to a university in Florida, then AICE is a good option, but most other schools are not required to accept it. Although it would be nice to get the AICE diploma if you are aiming for it.

@learnerr21 Personally, I am trying to get out of Florida, so I am going more AP than AICE. Like for junior year, I plan to take
AP Calc BC (take AICE Mathematics test)
AP English Lang
AP Spanish Lang (take AICE Spanish test)
AP Physics
AP US History (take AICE USH test)
AP Comp Sci A
AICE Global Perspectives
and I’ll do the AICE version of the similar class to get out of taking the actual class.

Very rigorous schedule, and I’m sure you’ll get where you want to be at this pace. I personally would like to stay in Florida for university and I’m indeed going for an AICE diploma cause i really need the scholarship money. If you are taking AP Calc BC then the AICE Math test will be a breeze for you as it’s meant to be a very advanced and rigorous pre-calc/calc class. I’d like to take more AP’s but my school offers more AICE.

I’m taking the AP World history course at my high school right now, and I know the ap test for it coming up in May. I come from a small sort of rural high school where almost no one manages to pass the ap test. In my current ap world history class we generally just watch football clips and other videos that are totally not related to world history, as a result, I don’t really know how to even begin studying. I really want to at the very least pass the ap test, and am wondering if anyone has good studying materials or methods/tips to use

@Lightsaber43 For AP world, I’ve heard that studying exactly from the Princeton Review book is a good way to pass. Also, watching different videos on YouTube will help. I’ve heard that the short clip “History of the world” is surprisingly helpful. I am going to self study for it too. Personally I brought a AP world crash course to use as a text book

Sorry this is kind of random, but have any of you taken both APUSH and AP Euro? I am taking APUSH this year and signed up for Euro next year and am wondering if the courses differed much other than the material. I know this largely varies from teacher to teacher but in general what do you guys think?
