For instance, why not apply to GWU and American University? You would need to show interest (ie., join their mailing list, open every message they send, and click on the links you find interesting) but it’d be a solid alternative if you didn’t get into G’Town

Pretty sure they (particularly American) emphasize level of interest because they do not want to be “backups” to Georgetown (or GWU in the case of American).
