Schools

  • Safety:NC STATE, ECU, UNCW, UNCC
  • Likely: UNC, USC, FLORIDA, Cal state Long Beach, UCLA
BSMDs:Baylor, Augusta, Tulane, Wayne State,Stony Brook, UCONN,Rochester,UMKC, PENN STATE, SGU
  • Reach: BROWN PLME(applying regular decision to get my GPA up)

My GPA is lower because I struggled in Calc but the rest of my classes are pretty much As

Congratulations on your achievements so far.

What does ‘parents are willing to spend under $100K per year’ mean? No college costs that yet. Can your parents afford full pay without them taking out debt? Will you qualify for need based aid?

All the BSMD programs are reaches, as are UCLA and USC (assuming So Cal.) You might also consider BSDO programs, including LECOM DO. Why do you want to do these programs? I ask because it will benefit you to have that clear in your mind. The vast majority of med school students do not go thru these programs.

Lastly, I don’t love having one of your LoRs from an AP research teacher. If that person will provide the best STEM LoR you can get that’s fine, but would prefer a core science or math teacher.

The main thing may be that you have very good in-state options that are likely to be affordable (although I did not notice any discussion of budget). This is critical. NC State for example is a very good choice. Getting a bachelor’s degree at NC State can set you up very well for applying to medical schools, assuming that while there you get high grades, good medical experience, strong references, and strong test scores.

I do not think that UCLA is “likely”. I think that it is at best a reach. Similarly all BSMD programs are reaches.

UCLA out of state will also be full pay. What is your budget for a full 8 years of university? Can you get as far as an MD with minimal total debt? If you are serious about medical school (and it looks like you are) then you need to budget for a full 8 years. You could very well end up spending $900,000 by the time that they call you “doctor” unless you take care up front (eg, by starting at an affordable university).

You should expect premed classes to be significantly more difficult compared to high school classes. Be cautious about jumping ahead. As an example, both daughters had majors that overlap a great deal with premed classes. Both postponed organic chemistry until their junior year of university, and came in better prepared than they might have been if they had taken it earlier.

Given your list of schools to apply to, it would not surprise me at all if you end up at NC State or UNC as an in-state student. However, I think that this would be a very good outcome, and would give you the opportunities that you need to take advantage of to get to medical school and do well.

Thank you for your response, I really appreciate this feedback. USC is for South Carolina because I am a North Carolina Resident. I do have a core science teacher willing for a recommendation, but I preferred my AP research teacher because we are more close. I want to do these programs because I am certain I want to become a physician and have continued interest in medicine. I prefer bs/mds because I don’t mind staying at schools for 5+ years as long as I am guaranteed for medical school. I have an aunt who has been struggling during the medical school application process, which pushes me more towards BS/MDS. I also really like the programs that I will be applying to.

Why are you interested in CSULB (Cal State Long Beach)?

I agree that UCLA will be a reach. UCs give very little, if any, aid to OOS students. UCLA’s estimated cost of attendance for OOS students is $76K/year.

Make sure you understand all the requirements of each program you apply to
required GPA to stay in program, whether or not you still have to take MCAT, whether or not you can apply to other med schools if that’s what you choose to do after the undergrad portion.

I appreciate that you are certain you want to become a physician. But please have a Plan B, and ideally a Plan C.

I had guessed otherwise. This may give you another very good option (although I do not know enough about them to compare U.North Carolina with U.South Carolina).

Are you either a US citizen or a US Permanent Resident?

I am a US Citizen. In NC we have specific regions of our state, like Mecklenburg, Union, etc.

Congrats on a fine record.

Is USC as in Southern Cal - not only is it not a likely, it’s a high reach - as is UCLA. Long Beach a match - but don’t forget your test won’t be used at UCLA or Long Beach.

Edit - just read your other posts - U of SC - another safety and with great merit (and you’d have a chance at the Honors College).

Why four safeties? It’s fine - but you can certainly cut two. And U of SC is a safety too - IMHO. I assume but don’t know NC State is a safety - but may not be based on what I read but given your majors, likely ok. And not sure UNC is a likely.

Why all in-state on the safeties? It’s fine - but with your stats, you could go out of state with a reasonable cost too. You actually did so with South Carolina
so good.

Can’t rate you on the BSMDs but I know they are very very very tough. You could also look at the guaranteed med school admission schools from LECOM.

Your list is fine - because you have safeties. Just make sure you’d be happy to attend.

Good luck.

Thank you so much, I appreciate the feedback. USC is South Carolina, I probably should have clarified that.

Thank you and I will definitely keep this in mind.

What is a “professional engineer of your county”. I ask because my husband IS a licensed professional engineer, and this is something NO high school student is able to be.

What is your annual college budget per your parents?

This person is writing one of OP’s LoRs

OP says up to $100k per year, but multiple posters have already asked for clarification.

Ah
still
professional engineers are licensed by the state, not county
unless NC has some different rule.

@MaineLonghorn

I think the OP just means it’s a PE who lives in the county. All PE registrations are by state in the US. There is reciprocity between some states but not others.

Seems unlikely that such a LoR from a licensed Professional Engineer whom the student shadowed would matter, compared to the usually requested ones from teachers and counselor, especially since the student is going nowhere near civil or any engineering as a college major.

I agree. And some schools won’t even take extra or non-teacher LoRs.

Just piece of advice from experience.

  1. Check all BSMD programs that you plan to apply. See what their SAT cutoff and GPA cutoff plus deadlines.
  2. Check requirements to apply and stay in the program.
  3. Check what BSMD guarantees and what GPA in college and MCAT needed.
Here where you can get many surprises.
Some programs maybe regional (or heavily prefer local students, or minorities) - if I am not mistaken Augusta, Cincinnati etc.
You are ORM. So getting to medical school is going to be difficult. Your SAT is on low end (people even with 1550+ may not make it), your GPA is also not 4.0. So BSMD going to be problematic.
Look at outcome. If 50% of students from BSMD do not get to med school ask yourself is it worth it.
If programs guarantees only interview, I would cross it. If program requires MCAT 510, I would think a lot before paying 80k per year with no guarantee. What if you will get 508?
If I were you, I would strongly look into BS/DO programs. Your chance to land in a good BSMD with guaranteed spot in medical school is quite slim.
BTW, you did not take even AP Chem yet. You know Org Chem is MD dream killer.

if you even still want to be a doctor in four years

Come back in spring to tell us about success with your BSMD application. I agree that every single one is a big reach.
